Hi,

I have also randomly encountered diverse troubles with importing animated models in x-format into model side. The problem is supposedly caused by some settings in x-format itself.
I found the only one solution, which helps in this case. If you have Ultimate Unwrap 3D, just load the problematic file to this genial converter (I know, it's not only converter) then resave it as DirectX 9 x-format again. Make sure the option "save groups as meshes" is unchecked. With this setup I got rid of all such problems.

Have you tried Blender?
Dunno, if this can help you. :?: I still avoid any contact with Blender. ;)

PS. Yes, UU3D is not free, but is surely low priced. IMHO this soft is a true gold mine. Not only for converting. You wont find anything better in it's price range.

I tried blender but there is a problem with the import and export of their direct x and I think caligari and microsoft doesn't really want to make truespace usefull even the animation export import is bug down now.

There are free versions of 3D Exploration that can covert X models to a Truespace compatible X version. Try this link for several older 3dex versions. http://www.dutch-boy.com/3De/" I model with TS for an older video game that I convert TS based X models to XSI.

Please don`t forget that X is not a format, but more a bundle of formats. There are so much versions and derivates around, its a miracle when you find two softwares that work together when it comes to X. I personally avoid X when possible.

I've heard that before from other 3d modelers too. However, I've also heard that the X exporter in TS is broken as well. Still, a lot of people continue to use it on a regular basis as do I.

The X format like every other 3d modeling format has changed over time as new releases of MS DirectX and as well as other 3rd party 3d modeling software for that matter have been released, but the X format still a viable 3d format in use around the world.

Try the 3dex converter and see what happens. I converted a ton of older XSI models to X and they all seem to load into TS just fine complete with animation support.

Avoiding the X format is not always possible especially if the original model was created in that format and someone wants to import an X model into TS for editing.

It`s not broken. It just exports one of those derivates. Modeler exports another X than the Workspace by the way :)

Yup, I agree with Tiles. It looks like UU3D exporter and tS importer uderstand each other wery well. This is what I observed too.

If you reread the original post Dark got an error when trying to load the X model into TS.

Reconverting the X model again may solve the problem. The 3dex X version is apparently compatible with TS from my work using it. I use the TS X exporter all the time and import into TS as X too without problems, so the issue is with the X version that Dark is trying to import made with another version of X not fully supported by TS which he's apparently using Tiles.

I was just thinking that you could also open the X model in 7.6 after switching to Truespace 6 and then using the bridge to switch to the 7.6 interface. Depending on the X format you need you could then save as either an FBX with 7.6 or regular X with TS 6 using the TS bridge selectively. TS 7.6 is pretty flexible in terms of the X format in both binary and text forms. I find that while some people have trouble working with the X format in general; it really is more flexible then even the native Caligari formats. My past experience with the COB format is that it translates poorly to the XSI format in particular; 3dex tends to distort the geometry making an inferior XSI conversion. However, the X format translates quite nicely to XSI; they seem to share a lot in common especially the text versions of both.

If only someone would share the Conversions Pack 2.1 for tS 6.6... ;) IIRC it'll also work in model side for tS 7.x. Conversions Pack 2.0 is only for tS 6.5.
