The Tripods

Post by darkmage »

Hi everyone.

I haven't been around for quite some time, so it's nice to be back. :)

here's a render of some tripods I modelled in Wings 3D.

They are based on the tripods from the BBC TV Series "The Tripods" (based on John Christopher's books), and are rendered in Bryce 7 Pro, using True Ambience.

I hope you like them.

As always all comments VERY welcome.

Thanks.

Glad to have you back!
It looks good however every Tripod looks too similar to one another. I also would possibly show some wear and tear from their conflicts. Is the center eye a weapon? Maybe use a red glass shader for example.
Why did you use Wings over trueSpace for modeling?

right this is going to make me sound so silly, so here goes.

firstly:What do you mean by "the center eye"

secondly: I not sure what I was doing when I said it was modelled in Wings 3D. Because really the legs are all modelled in Truespace, and the body was modelled in Wings and then imported into Truespace for finishing off.

the reason I did it like that is that I find some jobs easier and quicker in Wings 3D.

A second render, with a more scary look.

This time rendered with IBL lighting instead of True Ambience.

Oh and I forgot to say.
Please could give feedback on the True Ambience lighting, as I'm still fairly new to the idea.

Thanks.

It's really cool. It looks pretty dephthy. I would put some texture on the ground tho, to balance the smooth feel to it. I had a look at 3D wings, and it looks fairly decent! But I don't think I will learn it just yet!

(Hah. Oh wow I'm dumb, I'll edit this post and put it in the right place shall I?)

It's looking good Darkmage. Are these machines capable of movement? Because the only thing I would say is perhaps give their poses slight variation, maybe looking in just slightly different directions or having one or two legs in a different place. Then it'd look awesome

It does have a texture, only its quite hard to see in that lighting.

Fixed and put something useful in its place!

Sorry about that, still amazed how I managed that. I'll post your tripod to even the score :D

That's all right.

And thanks for the feedback.
that is a good suggestion about the different poses.
I would have done it, but I'm having a little trouble with rigging for Daz Studio.
