Time to build

Okay.
I finally decided to go ahead and build a system from Microcenter.
Phenom II 6 core, Asus motherboard, Corsair Vengeance memory, SATA 6 GB/sec hard drive, 600 W power supply, new case,
and of course a UPC.
I will do that today; heading to the gym then time to order.
I figure, if I am going to get slammed to Pluto with bills I may as well live a little too. Be creative, that kind of thing.
I've tried using my laptop which is powerful but it sits on a tiny little desk; it'll be awkward to move it to the larger desk.
In order to considerably change things for us I'd need to switch jobs which may not be the safest thing to do at this time, but it's always
wise to be on the lookout and networking for another job.

Not a UPC; man I can't believe I said that... UPS. It's a UPS. :D

550 VA.

There were more expensive ones with higher thresholds.

So I got all the hardware Sunday. I started working on it last night. I got the power supply installed; too bad the really
cool looking label has to face towards the inside of the case. I thought about taking it apart and swapping out the sides of the power supply box but I doubt that will work anyway. I was going to install the rest of the components but
just had 'one of those days' where I felt no motivation at all. That's ok. Had a couple beers and all better now!

I will do more tonight; just want to be careful and not screw up.
When I was unpacking the power supply and case I was saying to myself, "oooh! What's this?" So that's a sign it's been quite awhile and I have to familiarize myself with all the cool stuff.

I should upgrade too. What computer can I build for $15? ... better make that $12.

OK the Challenge is to go green have at least 6 cores and use those apples to build a computer for around $12

Heh now I get it. Six cores (apple cores) haha! :D
That's pretty cool Steinie - the abacus. :bananacheers:

I got the components pretty much installed. One thing bothers me is, two screws that hold the motherboard in place
did not go all the way in to the offsets apparently. I don't want any vibration on the motherboard. Any ideas? I wonder
if I could use Lock-tite or superglue (just a touch) on the screws and on the motherboard at the screw to avoid this.

EDIT:

or hot glue. Or try other screws. Just gotta be careful is all.

Try making some rubber spacers by cutting sized sections from a small rubber tubing like those used in automotive vacuum hoses. They come in small diameters and you can probably get them quite cheaply at most auto parts stores in town. How's the new system shaping up Froo? Leroy.

Hey Leroy.
Well the hardware is installed except for the hard drive and DVD burner. Almost there.

Did you turn it on. I do a quick test and go to bios. I then monitor the voltage and temperatures.

There are what I call fine thread and coarse tread on the screws. Di you mix them up. Most times they use a coarse thread.

Also do not tighten the screws. Start them and once they are all installed you can tighten them.

I am not sure of your skill level, so if you have done the above then ignore.

Hey Shell.
Yeah I powered it on. I did get to the BIOS and surfed around there. So it's alive, at least.
Before I installed the screws I made sure I was using the right ones.

Ok so, I do not have a true SATA DVD drive; I have 3 old IDE DVD drives with a IDE to SATA converter. This does not appear to work, since I get a message on boot: No bootable device detected.
So, I suppose it is possible the IDE to SATA converter does not 'convince' the motherboard this is a true SATA dvd drive with bootable media in it.
The solution in this case would be to get a real SATA dvd drive.

Any thoughts folks?

Maybe. The good thing is, when I power on the computer, at least the new hard drive is 'Detected'. But the IDE dvd burner is not. No worries. Haaahhhh. I am going home. I have run out of gas.

When the power supply is on the bottom of the computer, do they turn the power supply around so the fan would be on top?

Well, good question.
I am thinking, no, since the power supply itself generates heat. Blowing hot air into the case would be a bad thing I suspect.

I have a question for the folks who have tried Windows 8 Preview. What do you think of it? If you have two monitors can you have multiple applications visible at the same time? I just started playing around with it.

How about the folks with Windows XP: Did you have trouble installing XP on a machine with SATA drives? A couple folks mentioned they had no trouble with installing XP on that type of system. I could do that as well, but just don't want to have to go through a lot of hassle. If there is hassle I may as well get a system builder version of Windows 7 and just install that, assuming I can have access to DirectX 11, and other latest technologies.

Looks like windows 8 upgrade for 40 dollars is for real. If you buy a computer with windows 7 now, you can upgrade it to windows 8 for 15 dollars.

If you have a upgrade windows 8 disk, you may only have to show it the original xp disk. If you download the windows 8, you need the xp installed to install the windows 8.

I think I had problems with sata drivers on install, but I had xp 64 with no service packs. Since I have been able to install XP without the need for the sata driver disk.

Do you have a memory stick and put XP installation on it. Should be able to boot from a memory stick.
