Nigec's random bin

Post by nigec »

I thought rather than starting new threads I'd just throw all my cr*p into here.
Most are unfinished or stuff that was done while beta testing Thea, or trying to figure out sketchup

Daz's V4 in Thea

Inspired by the jam flinging device from Wallace and Gromit, I just couldn't get the jar right for some reason, i kept getting facets.. sketchup and Thea

2CV from http://dmi3d.comeze.com/"
It was actually done to test a Linux bug in Thea, but uses the shadow only texture (ground plane) that was added recently.

The Mustang is one of the nicest free models on Turbo Squid, the detail is really nice and dosen't need any repair work, unlike the black AMC car which got new wheels and some body repairs, that and the 2CV came from http://dmi3d.comeze.com/"
Some really nice cars and trucks but some don't look as nice as the promo image lol, not many will open in TS as they are in lightwave format, I usually use Carrara 6 then convert them to obj or 3ds
The old woman, she was a total pain in the a**! I she is the standard Daz V4 with old age and creature morphs, i don;t have much Daz stuff so the clothes and hair I have don't suit an old person, the hair I used was default Daz content which looks very 3D

Most of the pre made stuff was done for a beta testing reason, the old lady was used for a UV mapping bug with the obj importer, 2cv a random crash in Linux, the Mustang was me trying shadow catchers in Carrara, the AMC MIGHT end up in a game, but I have no interest in doing games right now lol, the jam flinging thing was just a bit of fun and took about 3hrs :D

I like the light, the composition and the decors used for these models. how time to render these pictures need?

The old lady was left rendering over night, she has displacement on her entire body, parts like her face and hands were displaced x6 the rest just had the height values set so she didn't crack, she was rendered unbias, you just set it rendering and walk away lol

The Jam machine was also unbiased and left for an hour, the jam is an SSS material

The 2CV renders in 2 minutes in bias, that render was unbias though, shadow catchers don't work with the regular bias renderer as yet.. again about an hour

The AMC, 3 mins bias

the mustang, 5 mins in Carrara including the prop motion blur

I was bored so I had another play with the 2CV.. pity things like the grill and some gaps round the door let the model down

I love these old 2cv. When I was young we walked the fields and farmers were not happy. The roof of the car was made of canvas avoid getting a headache! :D

I owned one about 6 years ago lol, the plan was to restore it but it started leaking oil all over my mothers drive, I couldn't find anywhere to store it quickly so the original owner bought it back.
I think the rare simplicity appeals to me, you can take one to bits with a hand full of spanners, then again I'm a big fan of old cars.

If your interested, I rendered the coffee maker in Vray (sketchup plugin) and Thea
I used the Sketchup scene for both renders with the same SU materials etc
vray5.17mins.png
This is the Vray scene at the default values, there is some facets on the curved parts, render time 5mins 17secs
thea1.57.png
Thea's default bias engine, 1min 57sec
Both images done on a dual core AMD 64, Vista32bit
I have to be honest I don't have a clue with Vray, so maybe the time could be reduced, the bulk of the time was all the pre calculations, the actual rendering phase probably would be similar to Thea's rendering phase

The pre calculation time of vray is a big problem when you have a complex scene. especially when you work on the setting of the render. too long to try many setting and see what is the best for the final image. Vray need a quad core or more to be useful. Also for animation i prefer Lightwork for his speed. Without pre calculation you can see if a render will be good before it finish. you can stop if the setting are bad and you win a lot of time.

For the work you do Lightworks is a lot better than Thea, any sort of global medium effect produces scary render times, There is some people starting to do less photoreal and more "arty" looking images.
I don't do much animation, I've been hoping some guys would do some with the Blender plugin but it hasn't happened yet lol
