Alamo Pulse
Alamo Pulse is my new business endeavor. http://www.alamopulse.com"
I had been posting in my Phosphor Gallery thread but that business is gone now.
I'm having trouble with the parts of the terms of service that deal with copyright http://www.alamopulse.com/?page_id=189" . No copyright or intellectual property rights violations allowed of course. That includes any images accompanying an article. The idea is to shift responsibility to the person submitting material for publication. Although it really isn't that complicated the words to cover it can be.
What if I replace most of the legalese or complicated parts that are related to copyright etc. with something like: "By submitting material intended for publication to Alamo Pulse you warrant that such publication does not violate any copyright, intellectual property rights, law, or agreement"? I'd still need to do something with the "worldwide, royalty free, .... license" and republishing parts.

Re: Alamo Pulse
I'm unmotivated and haven't been doing anything on this. Haven't been properly motivated with the lawn care business either. The tax situation with my lawn care business is such that I might have had food only because I get paid in cash from some customers and neglect, due to poor bookkeeping skills I'm sure
, to record some of that. I probably won't even owe any income tax and it still seems like I'm just working to hand it all over. That doesn't motivate me try Alamo Pulse or anything else. Why should I work just to have it stolen from me, used for evil, wasted, etc.?

Re: Alamo Pulse
Hi Finis.
Regarding tax filing, you can file for an extension to October can't you?
I worked with a lady in Virginia who did that every year. Always put it off.
Also, there are folks who don't file for a few years even, then 'catch up'.
I would definitely look into extensions, since, after all, you need to EAT.
That is more important than the fatass gubment getting their 'share' of your
hard earned money.

I did some stuff. I converted Phosphor Gallery's business Paypal account to Alamo Pulse and connected it to AP's bank account. Now to finish the how-to's and other text on the site and try to get writers to write.

Re: Alamo Pulse
Finishing up the instructions etc. Hoping to get this going soon.
I'm having trouble with the "Submitting an Article, Advertisement, or Comment" section of the terms of service. http://www.alamopulse.com/?page_id=189"
The problem is copyrights and that the person who sends in an article might not be the copyright owner. I need some CYA vs. claims of copyright violations. The idea is to have the person who submits an article claim that it is legal to publish it in Alamo Pulse and take responsibility for any violations.
Usually, for amateurs, the writer is the copyright owner. They have not sold it or written under contract. There could be usable articles where that is not so but it is legal to publish it.
Examples of not the copyright owner but legal:
Uncle Prodigy said, "Hey, send this article to Alamo Pulse for me". (Legit if this is true.)
Public domain articles.
The article is licensed with GNU or whatever where anyone can republish it.
This is about the legal CYA. There will be an information page elsewhere to help people understand copyrights and hopefully avoid sending in stuff they shouldn't and wasting my time.
It could be more clear or simpler and there needs to some granting of permission to publish if there is a copyright owner. Any advice or ideas? Does the current one seem ok or need changes?
Any other advice about the site is welcome too. (I'm working on the small fonts.)
Edit: I found out how to let advertisers see the stats on their ad performance!

Re: Alamo Pulse
Checking Youtube's copyright stuff in its terms of service showed how to do that for Alamo Pusle's.
Almost ready to start.
Business license - check
Business bank account - check
Youtube account - check
Paypal business account - check
Paypal buttons for advertisers to pay me - check
Pages for Writers, Commenters, and Advertisers - check
Set up company in Quickbooks - Pending
Write an article - Pending
Get articles from people who said they would write - Pending
Offer a few businesses free ads - Pending
Publicity - pending
Free ads for 2 or 3 businesses so others will be more likely to buy ads.
The Youtube account has site use video tutorials now and will have a favorites playlist of videos related to the area.
If it works then later there'll be Alamo Pluse merchandise via Cafe Press or such and an Amazon affiliate page to sell books related to the area.

Great idea about contests Steinie!
I wrote an article. Three other people, one a professional writer, said they would. Getting closer to opening day.

It is free for everyone except advertisers.Steinie wrote:It is Free for them.
The people who said they would write aren't producing the articles. I'm sure they will eventually but I want to get this going. I think it would be best to have several articles in there before it goes public. People would be more interested in writing or advertising, I think, if there is a herd to join.
Since initial articles, except the one I wrote, aren't forthcoming I'm think of doing a limited publicity thing with something like this* http://www.alamopulse.com. Should I try this to get some articles to start with or wait until I can get them before any publicity?
Steinie's contest idea could be good too.
*At the time of this posting the site had temporary articles with titles and text like, "Write About History! ... Alamo Pulse is new and needs your articles about our history."

Alamo Pulse is ready. I have a advertisement running on a site where I publicize my lawn care business and 40 or more people have clicked the ad today. Of them one registered as a commenter but hasn't commented yet and two have visited several pages including the pages about writing. One of them was using an android based device so that lets me know the site is surfable with the phone-computer type devices.

Re: Alamo Pulse
Get this weirdness: The state made small electronic charges to AP's account for gross receipts tax. The charges caused a thirty something dollar overdraft fee. AP has no gross receipts, yet, so I owe no tax, I didn't opt for automatic payment, and it isn't tax time. I'm playing phone tag with a supervisor at the tax office. A similar charge also appeared on my lawn business account.
No real progress on Alamo Pulse since the one writer.
I did add a translation plug-in. There are are many Spanish speakers and a sizable group of Germans* here so maybe that can help expand the audience. That would increase appeal for advertisers. I'm great at steps 3 to 10 when step 1 is nearly impossible. Expand what audience? Please what advertisers? What would an audience read? There are few articles.
I can't get family and friends to write anything to help start it. I have no money for advertisements and a massive ad blitz is what most businesses do to get started. This could suffer the same fate as Phosphor Gallery. Death by invisibility.
So far inquiries about writing are just looking to write spam articles for their businesses. Detective work with the hit tracking stats indicates a trend. "Page trails" end at the pages where visitors discover that comments and articles will be reviewed before publication.
*The German air force trains pilots here.

Hm if there are many German speakers there, do any of them get together for dinner and conversation?
That's called a Stammtisch (Regular's Table); I believe.
Maybe they can post information about get-togethers at a local restaurant?
Do you have Oktoberfest festivals there? Or other cultural events that cultural groups
can post about, on your site?

Cultural events, good idea Froo. If I can just get the time and energy to find and contact them. Need to contact that writer's group too. Signs for Oktoberfest are all over town now. I'll talk to my German lawn customers. Many cultural groups. Interesting if Apaches would write something.

Re: Alamo Pulse
I removed the translation plug in for the site. Try it again on some future version.
After a little more simplification of the instructions, guidelines, etc. I will place an online advertisement with New Mexico magazine. Their readers are interested in similar content. They have affordable size/placement options for the ad.
I made a custom background for Alamo Pulse's Youtube channel. Not fancy but gives it a look of its own. http://www.youtube.com/user/AlamoPulse" . Also made one for Splododyne. http://www.youtube.com/user/Splododyne"
If APulse works out as a business then there will be the Youtube channel to gather existing appropriate videos in favorites and playlists and provide video storage if needed for the magazine site. There'll also be an Amazon affiliate page with books on subjects similar to the magazine and a Cafe Press, or such, connection for merchandise.
That's steps 3, 4, and 5. Now for step 2: publicity.

simples suggestion = alamo pulse logo and web site address lower foreground and use one of your photos from the area as a background.... if you can add the word magazine so the ad educates the reader as to your content.

Re: Alamo Pulse
Hack almost fixed. It got the lawn care site subdomain too and that is still being redirected to AP unless I go directly to the subdomain.
I'm still not feeling secure since I wasn't prepared to nuke it all and redo from scratch and backups. There may still be bad stuff waiting somewhere. I've learned a lesson now. Obsessive backups to be done. There were directories full of files with names like web addresses. The names looked like they were for phishing or spam. I fear it was used to send spams from my stuff and my IP will be blacklisted. I did have a backup but it was infected too. They must have broken in a month or so ago.
I'm going to look into making mirror sites if that can be automated where hacks aren't likely to follow. Then I can switch to a mirror if AP or restore from one when needed.

Don't know. I don't think they wanted my site but rather any site. It looked like "script kiddie" stuff but from an automated attack. I think it is vandalism since they announced their actions by changing the front page and the folders were from some other stealthy attack for a spam mailer, botnet, etc.

Almost ready.
Inspired by Steinie re-registering here I'll try the user experience from the view point of a reader, potential writer, and commenter to see if anything needs polish but the info. pages are good to go. All that is needed now is some more articles. I'll write one when I can. One writer has written several and is still going. When there are enough I'll get a newspaper add to try for more readers and writers and then do a New Mexico Magazine web site ad.
What do you think about the pages that tell how to write, how to advertise, and how to comment? See any improvement needed anywhere? Alamo Pulse

Re: Alamo Pulse
Thanks James!
The business' license expired. Seems I neglected to pay the fee. So I have the form here to reapply for it. The way things are now I don't really see a point in trying to start a business. But for a while at least I'll be better off with another source of income .. whatever isn't stolen from me and used to buy votes from parasites. The chances of it succeeding were low before and near zero now but trying does no harm.
The guy who was writing articles hasn't written lately. He has been busy with work before. He has a decent article pending a few changes. The other writers he may have recruited have not appeared. Maybe I'll ask him about them.
I have contact info for a local writers group. Have to call them. Maybe they will write and I could ask them for ideas about making it appealing to writers. I need to be more active if I'm going to get anywhere with this.

Re: Alamo Pulse
I might get advertising at a local restaurant. Their table tops have ads. It is good ad space and the tops are manufactured items so it probably isn't cheap. I filled out an application but haven't heard from a salesman yet. Probably out of my league but good if I can afford it. Now if I would just overcome my telephone-o-phobia (worked in a call center for too long) and call the writer's group.
I'm not enthused about doing business now. I don't care to be a slave to kleptocrats and their parasite hoards who will take or destroy everything I work for. It is only going to get worse. But until then I'll be better off if I can get this going.

Re: Alamo Pulse
Hey! He wrote some articles for Alamo Pulse: Newspaper Article
I'm going to get a newspaper advertisement for the magazine this month or next. That is affordable for me.
The table top ads ... I attempted to contact the company that makes them directly and snooped some. It could be that they are just going out of business or "restructuring" but some things aren't making me want to give them money. Company name not on their own table top ad, website contact form doesn't work, contact form email is an @yahoo free address instead of @<company name>, a business watchdog group is redoing their page about them (why?) ... it doesn't smell right.
I'm going to get a newspaper advertisement for the magazine this month or next. That is affordable for me.

I have an advertisement in the local paper. It will be there for a month. So far nothing spectacular has happened.

Re: Alamo Pulse
Looks like I've discovered a way to make a web site totally invisible and uninteresting to anyone: advertise it in a newspaper. Hits on the site were slightly above normal the first day but were below normal after. A few more looked at the how to pages than usual. No email, no comments, no inquires about writing or advertising. Not even many reading the articles.

Invisible?
That happens if the 'metadata' gets changed and/or the IPnumber or Web address gets changed.
You may have to redo that notification thing so you pop up in search engines.

Na I was writing figuratively. Search visibility is fine. I'm just whining that I put an ad in the paper for the business and nothing happened. It is odd though that activity is low. I expected a surge of visits that leveled off in a week or so.

I keep getting emails from some Websites on how they missed me and etc. heh
Some Websites put you on a email list as an 'opt in' so one can be reminded they still exist.

Re: Alamo Pulse
An opt in email list isn't a bad idea. I thought of having an opt in email version of the magazine. That would increase interest among advertisers since there would be two mediums to present their ads. That would be something for later.
For those who don't know: Alamo Pulse is an online magazine I'm trying to start as a business. The idea is regional interest articles written by current or former residents of the area. I hope to earn money selling advertising space.
Little effect from the newspaper ad. Site traffic is still normal or less and no one (except the previous writer) is interested in doing anything.
Nothing will happen unless there are many visitors to the site. I think my ad can be improved. The name is in big letters with a "pulse" squiggle line under that. Then brief description and the web address. The ad is about 1" x 2". I think that on a quick glance people think it is a medical type of business and read no more. If I can do another ad then I'll make it instantly clear that it is a magazine.
Another failure point could be the unlikelihood of people writing articles for free. While I can't pay anything much I could offer a token like $5 if an article is published. I could also make bumper stickers (with my Zazzle account) that say "Alamo Pulse Writer" and the web site. People who get published would get one. What do you think?

Re: Alamo Pulse
Still nothing. I'll try to do another ad making "magazine" extremely obvious if I can afford it.
A new lawn customer has potentially recruited several other customers in that neighborhood so I might have money for the ad. The tax and expenses situation is not good so I might have plenty of customers and gross income but have no money left for me. With tax-mageddon, health-mageddon, and economy-mageddon coming there seems little point in any business efforts but that is what there is for me to try right now.

Re: Alamo Pulse
The plan. Talk to the local writer's group about them writing and get their ideas about how to get the magazine going and make it appealing to writers, readers, and advertisers. Then get another advertisement. Hopefully the writer's group will know of good places to advertise this kind of thing. Otherwise the ad goes in the paper again.
I'll make more stuff to sell on Zazzle and if some money comes from that I'll put it into developing Alamo Pulse. I sold a shirt recently and a mug some time ago. Over $5 earned so far. I'll be a millionaire soon.
Any suggestions for a new logo for AP? The heartbeat pulse line is the obvious one and a simple symbol for brand recognition but it also means "medical" to viewers. It is not unique and already has meaning.

Re: Alamo Pulse
Hey, I saw some nice articles. The site looks good overall Finis.
Local writers group I think is a very good idea.
(Thinkin' abt it like a businessman)... if you consider the size of the internal market (how many people does Alamogordo have anyway?) you have to season the expectations. Expectations for acquiring viewers, and content providers. (Joe does good)
Expansion of market is growth. Expansion of market is also a leveler in the dips.
Um, Trying to expand the external market brings tourism to mind.
Search out website networking (for contacts, for content?). They mention you on their sites, you do the same. Write an article for them.
Focus, (and excite), your one line intro to your site. Do you have some exciting (visually) pics in that area? Maybe part of background? If there's some cool/famous scenery that you can use also?
ALAMO PULSE written (outlined on top) in a famous feature (mountain range?)
A star streaking through the background on a sunset/sunrise colored pic. (reference to Roswell, the space and NASA activities in that area, and I'm sure the beautiful skies)
I dunno. Just brainstormin'. Maybe there's something in here you can use.
I like the site though buddy.

Re: Alamo Pulse
Thanks for the brainstorming. Yeah expanding the market might be needed. Go national or global. Writer's must live in, or have lived in, the area (approx. 50 mile radius) or Las Cruces (totaling about 160K current residents). I'd hoped that the local interest angle would work for me but it is not. I could try anyone can write but the articles have to be about this region. I'll see what the writers group says and try the local thing some more. Then go national if needed.
Not much to work with for logos. Local symbols, landmarks, etc. aren't known beyond town and same for regional things. I like "pulse" but maybe I have to change the name.

Re: Alamo Pulse
Changing it. Probably not soon but the new plan is to go regional. It will become Southwest Pulse and anyone can write but articles have to be about stuff in the SW. Texas will count as SW. Advertisers can be anywhere. That increases the number of readers, writers, and advertisers who might be interested, provides numerous widely recognizable images for logos and ads like saguaro cactus and the grand canyon, and includes large urban areas like LA, Dallas, and Phoenix.
Still need to contact the local writer's group for ideas.

Re: Alamo Pulse
Alamo Pulse will become Southwest Pulse.
Tag line: America's Southwest trough your eyes.
Who's an expert in English grammer? Would "southwest" be capitalized in the sentence above? If used as a title or header would the capitalization be, "America's Southwest through your Eyes"?
Go Daddy question. No one likes Go Daddy for hosting and I'm sticking with Midphase (would use Hostgator if I changed hosts). But they are much cheaper than Network Solutions for domain names. Any knowledge of Go Daddy's performance with that service?
What domain name providers are cheap but good? Especially ones with private registration (Most of your information does not show in whois for the domain. Instead the company acts as a proxy if someone wants to contact you.)

It would be Southwest with a capital S... it is used as a proper noun.
I actually use Godaddy for hosting and domain registration. I simply got tired of using discounters and moving accounts when they closed down or got acquired.
If you are going to use a proxy service for domain info privacy I have a suggestion. Create one account with the hosting provider specifically for that domain. I had a proxy registration among the web sites I take care of. One account moved to a new provider and the transfer to the new provider was a pain in the butt. It is better to have the flexibility to simply hand over a userid and password after the billing information has changed or simply close one account.

Re: Alamo Pulse
@Steinie: Thanks. "trough" like where horses drink? "trough your eyes". That doesn't sound good.
@V3rd3: Thanks. What about as a header or title? Would "through" and "your" be capitalized then? "America's Southwest Through Your Eyes"?
You mean if I have private registration (proxy) for say three domains then have three accounts with the host service, one for each site? That's for easier transfer to new owners? Makes sense. I'd say I'm not looking to sell such but ...
A guy wants to buy the phosphorgallery.com domain name from me. It has private registration. There is no gallery site now and the name points to my lawn care site (which is a subdomain of alamopulse.com). He will point it to his art site so I don't think there will be trouble.
Closed? Acquired? Maybe I'll stay with Midphase and Network Solutions. Stability and customer service are valuable.

Network solutions is a good provider. One of my wife's clients uses their hosting and has stayed with them for a few years.
You can capitalize all the words in your title. Articles like "the" are usually only capitalized if they are the first word in a title.
Given the demise of grammar thanks to netspeak and the current generation of educators ignoring its existence I would imagine you can pretty much do whatever you like.

Re: Alamo Pulse
I am investigating Kickstarter as a source of funding to start Southwest Pulse. I see other magazine projects there that are offering advertisements as the reward for support. That's what I would do. The ones I've seen haven't received much support. I would use the money mostly for advertisements to get the magazine known. Much to learn about it like the taxes on the collected money, how much I need, best advertisements to get, and if Kickstarter allows campaigns to start real for profit businesses.
Now that I have script blockers, tracking countermeasures, etc. I'm discovering how much websites are using resources from other websites. I see that Southwest Pulse (currently Alamo Pulse) has fonts coming from somewhere else and even the menu arrow graphics.
