Project DONJ

Post by compPanda »

Since Marcel has been asking what we are doing, I am going to keep this thread updated with progress in the 3D parts of my Trainz railway line. I am modeling the old Dalarna-Ockelbo-Norrsundet railway in the Trainz 2010 simulator.

While doing this, I need to make several 3D object, which also needs to be lowpoly.
This is my second object, besides the power wire that I have asked some questions regarding copying to Blender in the main forum.

This is a lowpoly hay barn. It doesn't really have any real world counterpart - I needed to practice my lousy UV mapping and texturing skills on a lowpoly house..

The image is from within Trainz. The other objects are not my creations.

Good start there panda. If you don't have it already, go to cgtextures.com. They have a real good selection of textures. Most all are free.

Actually, the textures for the doors and the walls is from cgtextures.
The roof is something I don't really recall where it come from....

Thank you for your nice comments.
I am continuing the "fast and less detailed" approach - this is a work in progress off next project, Wittersjö station.

There is UV mapping to be done, needs to fix the roof and add a chimney. I also think I will add more details which in turn mean that I will need to make a special low poly version also for distance viewing.

You'll find that A LOT of 'detail' can be added in the texture process.

I decided to raise the bar and started modeling an steam engine.
I am sure I soon will be told how stupid I am to model an steam engine in Truespace when the Klingon software "Patak" does that better, or the open sourced script language "Caputt" that has a much better UV mapping for steam engines and comes with built in steam sounds.

Any how, this is the current progress of the tender:

Tuepace is a plain and ordinary polygon modeling software like any other out there... If its used that way you wont run into any
trouble...... If you use it as if it isnt such you will run into the same problems you ran into and you will have the same questions
and i that just wants to help you will have the same answer...... clean polygon modeling.. avoid messing up your meshes with
operations Truespace has been (advertised for doing so well) and still fails in doing...... because its nothing else then any other of the polygon modelers and requires the same way of modeling..... Truespace lets you make ngon but be sure that your
target application also lets you use them another thing to be aware when using TS......
same with Uv mapping......if used under the limitations of what Truespace can do you wont run into trouble....
this is even more important if you want to export into a game engine since that can wreck the speed of you simulator or game..
You should by now have the idea that we are talking about the basics of modeling not any type of brand..... ;)
Nice start with your tender.. makes me want to continue my train project..

nice engine, and station compPanda.
Are you going to animate the train? It'd be cool if it
would stop at the station to pick up passengers, then
leave again.

Nice!

Thank you froo

Well, in some extent I will need to animate the train - I need to animate the piston movement etc but I will not make an animation off this - it will be used in a train simulator. Together with a companion I am building a virtual railroad, in a simulator called Trainz, that is a replica of an old about 80km long 3ft railroad. So we have a lot of things to create, about ten different station buildings, warehouses, bridges, roundhouses, other houses etc....

What time frame are you using. I am interested 1880 - 1900 in northern wisc.

Do you use a cad program to plan your buildings and train cars?

Well, we are using a time frame of about 1930-1950. And the line is located in the southern part of northern Sweden (climate more like Minnesota) with Swedish 3ft track (which is a bit larger, 891mm to be correct). It is mostly forest landscape around it.

We actually uses Blender, Truespace and Gmax currently. We will also be using Sketchup.

We follow a real prototype, a railway that was founded in 1876 and used for almost 100 year until 1970 when it was torn up (besides a small portion that is a now a museum railway). It was put there by a private enterprise to handle iron ore and wood products and it remained privately operated during it's entire lifespan. Steam operation was used during it's entire lifespan, even if the last 15 year showed an increasing usage of diesel engines the steam trains was never abandoned.

That is interesting. My grandparents emigrated from Sweden around 1900 and settled in northern Minnesota.

I am trying to model a lumber town. I have a few pictures that are low resolution.

I saw the letters å and ä in Jädraås and I realized then i read the thread that you come from Sweden, as I do, and you even are a member of Jädraås Tallås järnväg

http://www.jtj.org/ (There is a english, french and deutsh version of the site.)

I become interested in Jädraås water tower and here are a link to the work:

I hope you dont mind mentioning these links.
