Yeah I totally read that great news! I used CS3 a lot back in the day...

Like truBlue said it's not free. Looks like it's an "upgrade" version that removes the need for online activation.

I downloaded and installed Creative Suite 2 and it seems to work even on Vista 32, sofar.
I also downloaded and installed Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0.

Ok; I am confused.
I do not have a copy of CS2. Is it truly now free, and can I download a copy?
Or is it only for people who already have purchased CS2, and have a license?

I have Photoshop Elements, that came with the Bamboo tablet. So maybe that is more sufficient than CS2?

I am actually more interested in Premiere Pro 2.0, if it will run on Windows 7 / 8. I cannot get Premiere 6.5 to install on Win 7/8

The way I read it is that it can be downloaded and the serial number is there and to activate it one has to make an account with adobe. I didn't see anything where cost was involved.

i.e. the Activation is to prevent putting it on more than one machine or at least that's the way it was.

Well, some places make it very clear that the program is legally available only to those who already own CS2 and that their intent is to allow current owners to continue to use the product after the activation servers are gone. However, that is not stated or clear in other places. Seems that it is free for current owners but Adobe did a poor job of communicating that.

There is no official statement available. Just some inofficial statements to scare people. Like it`s illegal to use it when you are no CS2 owner. And some inofficial statements that says the exact opposite. Like nobody will go after you for using this software. Both statements came from Adobe employees. But as told, there is nothing official available. Adobe officially plays dead here.

There is just the fact that you can download the software including serials from the Adobe page. You don`t even need to login to your Adobe account anymore. And searching Adobe for downloads you will be prompted to the CS2 download. You can`t make this more public, can you?

A known german PC page called Chip already linked officially to the downloads. Which they wouldn`t do when this would be illegal. They are very accurate at this.

The hook is that there is no support anymore. And you can`t upgrade from CS2. And that there is no working registration anymore. That`s why there are the serials. Which means, even when Adoben would want to, they cannot control if you use the software. CS2 is de facto abandonware, officially provided by the developers. Use it as is.

from my point of view is a green flag.. if you release the soft and the serial is because you release it as free.. maybe without rights to be used for commercial use but who knows.

remember caligari when released ts3 with a open serial..

also a good marketing way to get new customers.. and win the battle against others like sony vegas, photopait from corel etc..

Looking at some comments of the people who have downloaded the CS2, there is a caveat.


That is, that anyone with Windows 7 or 8 may not be able to run the software without major glitches. Adobe 8 Professional was the one most cited of having bugs with updated operating systems.

I suppose if you are still running Windows ME, Vista or XP or some earlier version, then this may fit the ticket.

With all things going to iPad-like devices this may be a sign of the future. The giant lumbering desktops will give way to "Clouds" and the only way to get software is to be part of the collective.

I used illutrator cs2 and Photoshop cs2 without any update since many years with XP. No problem to use these softwares with Win 7 now.

(I have no interest in getting CS2 free or otherwise.)

If you care about the legality, morality, or ethics of taking property then you must be sure that it is yours or that it is for anyone to claim or use. Statements by Adobe staff in Forbes and an Adobe forum may be official (approved by Adobe management) or not. Apparently software with key can be downloaded by anyone. That contradicts the "current owners only" nature of the Staff statements. So it is not clear who it is being given to.

Why don't those of you who aren't current owners but who want to get it free contact Adobe for clarification and also suggest they make a definitive well placed announcement so people won't be confused.

If you are a thief then I'm sure you can get a cracked copy of the latest and greatest CS somewhere. You shouldn't steal but if you will then why would you steal the old one when you could steal the new one?

Forbes isn't trustworthy but Chip is? Perhaps Chip is trustworthy, and their action legal, and the software free for everyone, but they are no more "official" than Staff statements in Forbes or the Adobe forum.

There is no such thing as "abandon ware". This is a ruse used by anti-property activists to pervert people's understanding of property and encourage theft. You can state that you relinquish ownership of some property but that is different that simply not using it or leaving it undefended.

How can it be "officially provided by the developers" if there is no official statement?

That you can take something doesn't mean it is yours. That no one will prosecute you for stealing doesn't mean it isn't stealing. I am saddened that even the slightest reason to explain this exists.

Knowing Adobe I dont think they are giving away a version of Photoshop !

I have win7 64 and I downloaded Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe 8.0 Professional and they all installed OK with out problems. I had to right click and use install as administrator. Sure these are old versions but I'm glad to get them.
The only glitch I had was Adobe 8.0 Professional was missing adobePDF.dll which I found and donwloaded from the internet.

Free software, cool.
