MMC Aug Sept _Outpost: Mine outside of town
This is the mineshaft outside the dome.
Any ideas on how to keep the light from bleeding through the walls?

Some model side Lightworks possibilities:
- some lights don't have shadow casting on
- some objects don't have cast shadows on
- there is a gap between some objects (floor-wall, building-mountain)
- the light on the mountain might come from the purple lights on top
- the walls are planes (use thin boxes instead)

Re: MMC Aug Sept _Outpost: Mine outside of town
thanks for the ideas.
Lights have shadows on.
The walls have width, (Generarated from a cube)
It was all one object so no gaps.
Check the material light on top nad it seems just to be coming from the area ligth within.
I'll have to look for the Shadow option to make sure it is turned on

Re: MMC Aug Sept _Outpost: Mine outside of town
This problem is often with map shadow wen the light is near an object. Use a ray shadow.
You can also use a projector light to avoid light on the mountain.

so don't try working on a model when you are stuck and feeling sick. I ended up deleting everythign sinc eI could not stop my light from going through a wall.
so here is the start of my model for the MMC.

I never realized how much the render actually has on the end result.
this is a few yafaray renders, one without volume and one with then a close up.

I had to adjust the model some and that moved my UV map, so I am mapping again. Thia is the first pillar mapped correctly. The ones in the back still need to be completed and I need to tweak the material a little more.

I was doing some texturing on it last night after reading through soem of the articles and Tuts someone posted in another thread. Really got me motivated to create some detailed textures in Gimp. I still have some tweaking to do so I shoud have an update soon.

I like this project, cool. Now I wonder how vehicles get in and out. Maybe just not shown. Next is the upper section of complex maybe an elevator, transport tube or something may enhance structure and show more then meets the eye helping the imagination to think things up. Some influence of what this structure is for, as in a tunnel is drilled or something next to facility plus equipement and lights going off into the distance maybe. Make it come alive with all sorts of activity being reflected outside, maybe some bent or broken items, junk yard of broken bits maybe. Hope this helps, keep up the great work.

Thank you for the comments noko, I like the ideas witht eh lights and the Junkyard bits, I will have to see what I can do.
The actuall elevator entrance is just off camera to the right and the exit is behind the camera. I am still looking for a camera angle that can get it all in.

Some additional texture work. I was trying the GIMP texturize plugin. Can take a small image and use the plugin to make a larger, tilable texture image. Worked pretty good on the green box just, needed a little tweaking.

Re: MMC Aug Sept _Outpost: Mine outside of town
Thank you,
Yeah I have been exporitng the UV Map, Loading in a small texture of steel with sctratches in it, and Duplicating the texture with sctratches behind all the faces. I then add a new overlay layer somewhat trransparent with solid noise that is toned down with contrast and blured, and colorized. Then an easy process of color picking the sctratches off the metal texture and then using the selection to paint a layer mask over the color layer.
With this most recent box I used. TExturize that made it a little easier, but a little more repetative.
http://gimp-texturize.sourceforge.net/"
SO I took another Steele texture, Shrunk it down to 256*256 and used texturize to bring the size back up to 1024*1024. Then applied the rest of the steps on the same process.
the texturize plugin worked well but does have some issues with textures that are briighter or darker in certain areas. All it took was a little tweaking with contrast and color picker to get it right. They have some nice examples on there website, and it is suppose to be able to make it tilable.

Well before I started on animating I decided to change some things around that I just ran out of time on with teh MMC. I changed the background and used teh star simulation to create a sky. It is not so stretched and I think Blends better. I also started playing around with atmospheric affects. I think it gives the render a lot more depth. Still a lot to do on this.

Re: MMC Aug Sept _Outpost: Mine outside of town
you should look at using the "depth field" feature on the scene to focus on you main attraction, maybe from behind the vehicle like you had it before or from the hull of the ship looking down at the vehicle...
see image below where i used it to focus on a specific part of the scene...

Karthogen, is really easy to know it... just need use. Use the post process editor and do some experiences, I never used DOF but in the first time I already reach good results. If you need help, just PM me and a explain which thing do what..

Re: MMC Aug Sept _Outpost: Mine outside of town
Thank you for the offer Leonregis. I went through two tutorials for DOF, One using a Zmap in a post process app like GIMP and another using the composite node editor in Blender.
The image above was done with teh composite node editor, Pretty simple process of setting the blur focusing the camera and render. I think it turned out pretty good, but the blurr is very subtle, maybe to subtle.

there should be a setting to blur the background as well, i don't know workspace side but i know on model side you specify what the minimum distance from the camera is that should be blurred and the maximum distance where blur should start...

I actually dont have a background image in that one. orginally started with a sphere skydome for the background but, I didn't like how it was turning out.
I created a circle around my plainand used a heightmap to create the mountain range. This left the top open and the program generates the stars in the background..

KEWL! that looks good... i should try that in modelside as well...
regardless though, you should be able to blur the background as well to keep the focus on you main object, which is the truck vehicle, right?

This one has a lot more blur. The ship is the focal point, I hope you all like it. I was a little shocked by it.

Ow seems that you are mastering the DOF, it's quite easy after you know what to do. I don't see any problem there, maybe it have one but I can't see.

Re: MMC Aug Sept _Outpost: Mine outside of town
see what a difference it makes to blur the background details? it automatically pulls you eyes to the tower with the ship on it!
now if you can use the default "afternoon" or "noon" light library, you will see what a difference the light and shadows make to the scene as well...

i will have to take a look at that light setup. Right now I have a 3 light setup with 2 infinite lights flanking the side with a hint of blue, and on key light from the front with a hint of Yellow.

those default light setups use 8 infinites, one for the direction of the sun with a specific color for the day at 1.57 intensity, one from right above and right below with white 0.3 and five from all directions at 0.2... very nice effect, this is what i used in my Sherwood scene...

I have a few last peices to fix before I start the animation. Still working on the lights, this is more of a night scene I was considering.

Looking good. Suggest maybe altering the brightness of the red lights so that they are not all the same intensity. Figure even in space there is going to be an imperfect batches of lightbulbs
The other thing that jumps out at me is the brightness of the ambient light on the mountains in the background. I would think that would be pretty dark back there. I'm assuming you want the mountains to be seen to show the ruggedness of the terrain but to me the lightness of the shadows is taking away from the primary object which is the outpost.
The progression of this scene from the beginning is great to watch. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the suggestions, I did just duplicate each of the red lights, So I will have to fix that.
I am still trying to figure out where the light is coming from on the mountains, I think I have a missing light somewhere. I would have thought if the AO was too high It would have lit the dark sides fo the model also. But, then again I am real new to this part.

Check the reflectance shader settings, K... there is a luminance setting that will light up an object even if there is no lights...

No problem. I have spent a lot of time tinkering with the lighting in my scenes to make up for my lack of modeling skillsKarthogen wrote:Thank you for the suggestions, I did just duplicate each of the red lights, So I will have to fix that.

Re: MMC Aug Sept _Outpost: Mine outside of town
Ok well I am starting the animation, There have not been many changes since the last update. I am going with the basic key frame animation. I have not done much post work on animations, so I am going to see about adding a title screen, transitions and an overlay in either Wiz or Blender Sequencer. Maybe even some camera shake if possible.
These MMC are always great ways for me to learn a new trick or try a new setting. Render times for my main animation look like they are going to be horendous. I will be rendering an image sequence with 300 frames, compiling the images in Virtual dub to an AVI and using that in post process.

I am hoping to hve this one completed pretty quickly and start working on an MMC robot. Should not take to long for the transitions and camera effects.
