How about a favicon.ico for this forum?

Post by 3dvisuals dude »

here's one I just whipped up that you can use if you want here, just upload it to the same folder as the main index page for the forum and it should work as is with almost every browser after the cache is cleared and the page is reloaded, or you can help the less savvy browsers out by adding a couple of snippets of page code that point to the file from the page header (just google "creating a favicon").

anyhow... use this one if you want or whip one up in the freeware IcoFX ( http://icofx.ro/ )

Here's a screenshot of the little 16x16 ico in Explorer and the actual favicon.ico file is zipped and attached to this post.

Maybe we should have a contest? :bananacool2:

Hi 3dvisuals dude,

Is it possible to use an animated GIF as a favicon? If so, how about a spinning 3D cube. Here's a crude example that I whipped up really fast --> Image.

Best regards, ~FL~

Hi First Light,

I like that one, looks great and incorporates the site color theme well, nice entry! :D

As for whether an animated gif format will work as a favicon, I believe (but I am not certain) that Internet Explorer cannot view an animated favicon in gif format, but here... lets test the theory and find out!

I have included your animation here inline as an animated gif format 16x16 image renamed (as it must be for this test) to "favicon.gif"

Animated GIF Format favicon Version:
favicon.gif
To test this possible IE favicon - gif - format incompatability issue, Augusto (or someone with page editing / ftp uploading access / permission here) will have to:

(1) Upload the "favicon.gif" image to the ROOT directory from whence the main forum page here is served (cannot reside in a subfolder) and

(2) the following two lines of html code should be added to the main forum header page to facilitate various browser requirements for favicon display:

Code: Select all

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="favicon.gif" />
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.gif" type="image/gif">
Note that when testing step 1 and 2 above, be certain to empty your browser cache and reload the (new) page before seeing if the favicon works in IE... I have also heard that IE is particularly stubborn with visualizing these even when installed correctly but that additionally one can go directly to the actual favicon.gif URL with IE and that (sometimes) resolves IE's issues with gif format favicons.

I use Firefox though, not IE, so this will have to be tested by someone else here unfortunately.

Also... if the methods simply don't work and you would still like to utilize a static version of that same gif file converted to an ICO format file... simply modify the two "gif" format extensions in the two code snippet lines above from "gif" to "ico" and then upload the following ICO version of the same image.
favicon.zip
Static ICO Format favicon Version is attached to this post as a zipped file because ICO format uploads are not supported by this forum

Hope this works :D

OK, lol, but I did get a good bellylaugh out of the test icon you just did! hahahaha!!!

I will hunt around on some animated 16x16's too and see what I can come up with for a few more entries in this too. I should have another 4 or 5 for upload here in the next few hours.

Fun stuff... making animated 16x16 icons is harder than it seems, lol

OK... here is a website where you can upload any square image and add animated text to your favicon and it generated it for you, shows you a preview of it, and lets you download it in both 16x16 animated format and 32 x 32 desktop icon format (both auto-generated into a zipfile for download)

here is the site:

http://www.animatedfavicon.com/

and here is an example i just made using it:
animated_favicon2.gif

and here is the actual favicon file zipped:
animated_favicon2.zip
(7.32 KiB) Downloaded 22 times
Everyone can easily make animated favicons in seconds with this free online generator :D

OK, lol, so much for me making 5 more of these... it takes a lot longer than one would expect to do a decent job on one of these little 16x16 buggers! :D

But.....

I did make you this one from scratch Augusto... hope you like it!

Also I hope other folks kick in some related effort here too and make a variety of these, you never know what you will come up with till you try! :D

Go for it folks! :bananacool2:

Thanks Prodigy. I whipped it up really fast to show the idea and I agree, it should be done better before using it officially. I simply hand drew the frames in Photoshop because it was quick. Someone who wants to spend the time to do it right in trueSpace will get much better results.

My advice is to keep it simple. With only 16 x 16 pixels, you can't do too much or it will look bad. That's why I chose a simple rotating cube. You can surely do a much better job. Unfortunately, I'm out of time ... family is coming to stay for a week and I've got a lot to do before they arrive. Oh joy!!!!

Best regards, ~FL~
