I'm running a four core computer with an i7 processor. I have 4gb of ram but will probably update that. Which windows XP should I buy? Thanks!

I have Win 7 and like it very much on my i7 64 bit.

Didn't think one could buy XP anymore?

I installed XP Pro 64 on my new i7 920 system with 6 Gb DDR3. It is pretty stable and fast.

Note that :
1- trueSpace thumbnails will not display in Windows' Explorer. It only works in trueSpace's load/save dialogue boxes (because they are 32 bits).
2- tS will not make use of all available RAM (2Gb max as far as it seems).
3- Libor's QuiCKDraw2D plugin doesn't work because its AutoCAD library is a 32 bits one.

I just ordere windos xp 32 bit. That should look after running older 32 bit programs. Thanks for all the suggestions.

i use x64 XP at home and iam pretty happy.

win7 at work and its not bad, but not that good. I have some problems refreshing 3d view in model view. I even dont know if there is some workaround. I need to swich to a another small view and then back to refresh it.

If your problem is only to have more than 4gb, you have only one answer possible: XP 64 bits (same thing with vista or win 7). All 32 bits OS can't use more 4g ram with a max of 2 gb by process (ex: truespace can't use more 2 gb).
the reality is different, result for 32 bits OS:
Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP SP1 : 4 gb max, 4 gb used
Windows XP SP2, Windows XP SP3 : 4 gb max, 3,5 gb used
Windows Vista : 4 gb max, 3,12 Go used
You can see furthermore the system is new, it is less effective with 32-bit: one of the reason to find XP faster than the other OS if you compare it on the same hardware with 32 bit OS. With a 64 bits OS, the limit of gb is near the infinite for a personal use (about 4 000 000 000 times higher). theoretical but you should buy a power plant to run all this.

due my 32bit experiences:
winxp max 3.2gb
win7 professional: 1.86

for truespace its best to use XP x64, because you can have more ram, the system is pretty stable (win server2003 core) and tS was made for XP.

3.2gb is due to the ram allowed for the hardware. Yours stats confirm than more an OS is new and more 32 bits is bad. It's time to change to 64 bits since Vista. Only XP can use 32 bits without too many problem. It is the only one who can allowed the 2gb TS can use (the max, even on 64bits). XP 64 bits is interesting if you need to work with several soft at the same time (and it is often for most of we). It is also the best OS for the "old" TS, but not for other new software. A difficult choose. The best choose if you can is to keep a pc with XP for TS and another pc with win7 to go to the future. the ideal pc don't exist.

Yes, the main asset with XP 64 is its support of many programs loaded at the same time. I can run trueSpace, Photoshop, Vegas (video edition program), ACDSee, Outlook, Firefox, Winamp, all at the same time, with no slow down nor crashes.

Now regarding 64 bits apps, I must say that there is not many apps around that handle the 64 bits. I have Sony Vegas 8.1 in 64 bits (Vegas 8.0 is 32 bits), but many 32 bits plugins don't work, and some features like print to HDV tape, or video preview while capturing don't work either.
