Modo or Blender
I have both and i am trying to decide should i update to modo601. cost for the update 395 euros.
i know blender can do almost anything but modo has the upper edge. Both are hard to learn.
also the new modo has some very good improvments .
any thought would be apreciated.

Re: Modo or Blender
I would upgrade when you can afford it. Blender is still very weak at the polygon modeling area. It has just learned to deal with NGons. It may last a while until the tools that benefits from it may find their way into Blender. It is not a real substitute for commercial apps like Modo. I even still model in trueSpace instead Blender because it has the more useful tools for me.
Nobody says that you can`t use both by the way. Just use the one where it is better than the other

Re: Modo or Blender
If you an afford it, want it, and considering that you already know Modo it would be a good investment. Of course, Modo and Blender and ...
In case you're not sure, you are in the top 1% of income in the US if you make about $389K per year or more (your group made roughly 20% of all income and paid about 39% of all fed. personal income tax). Five percent (like congress) starts around $154K, and fifty percent starts around $32K. (2006 IRS data). Hey! I was a one percenter when I was a programmer years ago! Well globally: US 50% approx. = global 1%.

Making a cash commitment will always make you try that much harder and stick with it, were as the freebie stuff your more likely to flit between them and not get anywhere fast, however the free options can compliment your work ie Blenders compositer, water sim, smoke etc are very easy to learn

Re: Modo or Blender
What version of Modo are you using? I upgraded to V6.01 from V4.01, it was a pretty good upgrade for me, decent character animation tools, the sculpting tools are a little better behaved (nothing like 3Dcoat, but they offer quick alternatives for touchup, cleanup of a model). The painting and multires tools are good, as well as the retopology... But, I bet V7.01 would be a very nice upgrade also... it really depends on you. I don't plan on upgrading to v7 when it comes out, I will skip that one, and see what is happening for V8... it is all about juggling the finances...

Re: Modo or Blender
Blender question: ya know how we create a cube (which has a straight edge) and use it to Boolean Subtract from our model to get a straight edge so we can Mirror effectively?
How do I do the same thing in Blender?

Re: Modo or Blender
You can`t. This boolean substract trick to clean the mesh is a trueSpace 6.6 trick that i haven`t seen in any other app yet.
What`s close to it in Blender is tris to quads. Or select all faces that you want to union, and perform a dissolve operation.
That would`ve been worth its own posting by the way

Re: Modo or Blender
One way is to get a straight edge is to delete the edges and polygons, then "zero out" the edge in the appropriate axis.
If the edge is running along the "Y Axis" then set coordinates to zero or whatever coordinate that show a straight and level.

Re: Modo or Blender
Don't think money. If you really want to do 3d, choose only the best for you and don't learn too many soft at the same time.
I Win enougth money with TS modeler to live and keep my time for the fun or other soft really different.

Re: Modo or Blender
That's good to know Tiles. That's why tS remains in my heart. It still has useful things, after all these yrs.
As for 'it's own posting', if you mean I should've started another thread for the question, 1. it's the first thread I came across that had anything that mentioned Blender and 2. I feel that for efficiency for anyone's search in the future relating to specific programs, in general the less threads they have to search the better. But I could be seeing it wrong.
James, that's the trick! Never thought of that. Thank you.
My two cents on the vs point: Free wins out every time for me, but free many times also means 'less than'. Been wanting to look into Blender over two yrs now, but the moment I saw they couldn't do ngons, I didn't bother (there's also the interface, and ease of use issue). Now, with 'bmesh' integration, a slightly better interface, good animation, and a worthwhile renderer, and (so far) no stability issues, I'm trying to make it my main 3D program.
If it helps anyone... I lauded tS to everyone in the past Because of the ease of use modeling interface. Stability issues pissed me off; every time anything I created started to get complex, it would crash. So I had to look elsewhere. The only way I was able to get started with Blender was to say, "Ok. Let's say I am totally new to this field and know Nothing. How does Blender work?" Then, the interface started to make sense. I had to stop 'comparing' and just took it for what it is. Though I hate using the keyboard, it does work well as a workflow. The trick to that is that I only use convenient keyboard shortcuts (ie keys close to the left hand, and less than 3 key strokes).

Yeah, nice images. But by no means comparable to stuff that you can find at CGTalk for example. There`s still a slight difference
