I plan to install Windows 10 Preview (from the Insider Program) on my personal computer this week or the next, as I'm running my 8.1 to the ground at the mo.

Windows 10 hasn't officially come out yet, not till July 29th for free upgrade to original owners, and August as standalone.

I do hear it runs everything Windows 8.1 could run - including most drivers.

IT'S A TRAP.

I will hold off on Win 10 until I am sure it stays free forever. We all know it will not stay free forever so the only business model left for it is subscription.

I am seriously considering moving everything to linux.

It will limit some choices but not as many as you would think.

Geeze! Microsoft is moving to fast for most people. I wonder if a new OS a year is on the way?

No BNG... Windows 10 will be the last windows version per MS announcements. They seem to be moving in the same direction as Oracle databases... one source for everything.

They will release updates to all users. The concern I have is that early adopters will get W!in 10 for free and when it moves to subscription you will either qualify for updates or not.

.. I dunno.

I really like the change of policy. It's a 1 year demo of a paid service/product. And well, looking at their latest conferences and things, they are even considering opensourcing Windows in the future, just like Linux. This version was very much crowd built, being a part of the insider program.. so as a product.. it's great. Hardware, DirectX12, crossplatpform, smaller than 8, faster than 8 (which was way faster than 7) and now with similar updates to like what we had with 8.1 - which didn't see huge changes you'd see from platform to platform, only improvements and optimizations.. for slow movers with OSers this is a good thing.

There will be major patches each year - and yes, the model will be to purchase updates or maybe subscription, or maybe you get these updates all for free once you own a lisence like it has been with windows 8 and 8.1, which is how I would see it (following Windows 8 model with 8.1 always being free for owners of Windows 8 AND 7.. ) Free for 1 year of a whole new product, is.. like a 1 year demo. If you don't buy windows 10 after the 1 year demo, you aren't elegible to the right to get updates, yes.. but that is because you don't "own" the right to use Windows Services, you didn't buy a license. If they follow 8.1 marketing model, all updates should and will be free if you own Windows. They themselves admit, their base revenue is not from the system, but they want the system everywhere, competing with opensource systems like Android - thus they will probably go down a similar model as 8.

Windows 10 is awesome as a product, more customizable, still touch friendly, mouse and keyboard enhanced, multidesktop, awesome new details concerning hardware and software and apps. It's more unified, and less a disaster as W8, more graphically orientated concerning drivers, better memory management, just.. a good product in my opinion....

And cheaper in the long run as your purchased copy of Windows 10 will last years without going obsolete so quickly - and you'll get a few years or more constant patches and improvements with one purchase + 1 year fully functional demo.

Yes, subscription is bad in my mind - Adobe did it, Autodesk will do it next year (terrible) - I think it's a terrible business model, and it give no right to the user - I really agree.. but if they plan to take over the market of Android and IOS with a more superior product that is also for PC and stronger machines - and even mainframes - then they have to play differently - thus all the free updates (with license and demos and futureproofing their OS (by not revamping it all the time, and patching and finetuning one frequently). Hopefully they stick to that. And from what I see, it will either drop price, similar model, or become free and they stick to their hardware and/or other software/services. A free base operating system will only do them good.

What is this thing about owning software?... Per definirion you
always JUST had a license to use the software...and quite
frankly after a few years most of the software became more
or less obsolete in the first place......you couldnt run the software
with any kind of security..in most cases without any kind of useable
virusscanner........!!!! You want to surf the net with Winsows Xp...?
Its like being open for any kind of hackers......!
Software is made for a few years worth of use and in most
cases thats it! I am on subacription for Vue Professional and pay
a relative moderate amount every year to have the last great piece of software...
I dont use EVERYTHING anymore.....just the basics.... in case of 3d
3 modelers a painttool and 2 renderengines....plus Photoshop
Aftereffects and Premiere......for writing open office..... thats mainly it!
If its subscription even better.....I get new soft
on a regular basis... for the money....same with Windows...

I just noticed a new item in my task bar on win-7; see image. Its a link to upgrade to windows 10. You can upgrade, reserve your copy, or get to know windows 10.
I have so many programs installed on windows-7 and and so much in my start menu I don't have to nerve to try and upgrade, even thought it is free. I'm sure something
is bound to go wrong and windows 7 has been working prefect for years.
I also have a Mac book Pro 15.5 and I have window 10 beta installed on it since Dec 2014 using parallels desktop. I just installed the latest beta a couple of days ago.
I won't be upgrading until it's been on market for a least a year and all of the problems in upgrading are made know by users.

I hope Win 10 is better than Win 8.1 on installing it. Win 8.1 uninstalled a lot of my software and I had to do a mass search and hunt for serial numbers to reinstall them.

I have no problem with win 8.1 pro. I use the desktop interface that is very close to XP's. It is an install on a new machine so I expected to reinstall or reactivate my programs.

I agree about waiting. The first release of software is usually full of bugs.

Trap? Could be. I wouldn't expect the free trial to last forever. I can't afford to buy or subscribe so I'll stay with win 8.1 for a long time. What if there is no convenient way to revert to your previous OS when the free trial ends? Then you'd have to revert by difficult means or buy it or buy a subscription or whatever.

The fine print about the win 10 trial probably covers if the it is free forever or what happens when it isn't and other such issues.

EDIT:

Having reviewed the features of win 10 I am interested in upgrading. I'll wait though to learn if I get it free now will it cost later. Also wait for the initial bug swarm to pass.

8-) I don't believe this is a trial version but is indeed a free upgrade. The info I have seen says the free upgrade will be available from July 29, 2015 until July 29, 2016.
After that time period if you haven't upgraded then you will need to purchase Win10.

Tried out trueSpace with windows 10 Preview, it works fine. 10 has a bit of a few small bugs I've found, minor interface kinks, but it's looking and working nice. Much nicer than windows 8.1 once they get the kinks out.

I got this email regarding Microsofts new privacy policy:
As part of our effort to improve your experience across our consumer services, we’re updating the Microsoft Services Agreement and the Microsoft Privacy Statement. We want to take this opportunity to notify you about these updates.
The Microsoft Services Agreement will cover most of Microsoft’s consumer online services, including Xbox Live, Bing, MSN, Skype, OneDrive, Outlook.com and Microsoft account. You can see the full list here. The Microsoft Privacy Statement also covers most of Microsoft’s consumer products and services.
I then clicked on the link to actually...read...the damn thing and was a bit surprised by their boldness:

"Microsoft collects data to operate effectively and provide you the best experiences with our services. You provide some of this data directly, such as when you create a Microsoft account, submit a search query to Bing, speak a voice command to Cortana, upload a document to OneDrive, or contact us for support. We get some of it by recording how you interact with our services by, for example, using technologies like cookies, and receiving error reports or usage data from software running on your device. We also obtain data from third parties (including other companies)."

But then:

"We share your personal data with your consent or as necessary to complete any transaction or provide any service you have requested or authorized. We also share data with Microsoft-controlled affiliates and subsidiaries; with vendors working on our behalf; when required by law or to respond to legal process; to protect our customers; to protect lives; to maintain the security of our services; and to protect the rights or property of Microsoft."

Wait what...? I didn't authorize any of that.
Also, to save lives...interesting case. If they meant obliquely like in a child predator case then I could see that but they also cover legal services and requests so...Microsoft literally believes that your personal data will put out fires and save drowning children if need be.

Also, should you ever sue Microsoft, guess what? Technically, based on that statement, they can use your own personal data/search history against you.

Oh and Bing, my god Bing...fuck you. That Bing Toolbar is packaged with damn near everything, isn't it? I encountered one or two Microsoft Office bundles that WON'T ALLOW YOU TO INSTALL THEM UNLESS YOU INSTALL BING TOOLBAR FIRST.

What is that? Nobody uses Bing, ever. Nobody likes Bing. Even the name sounds abysmally stupid.

And I use Skype a lot; the info about Skype is downright scary. You can find the full thing here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/privacys ... fault.aspx

"Skype applications (including Skype features exposed through other applications, such as Windows 10 communications apps) allow you to send and receive voice, video and instant message communications. As part of providing these features, Microsoft collects usage data about your communications that includes the time and date of the communication and the numbers or usernames that are part of the communication. We may share or disclose data with other Microsoft-controlled subsidiaries and affiliates that may each, independently, use this data for the purposes set out in this privacy statement."

Ah seriously, that is just garbage. Really, you need to know that? Why? so you can send me ads about what I said to my friends about sports or their kids or married life or what-have-you?

Oh and Windows 10. It looks like it's going to be this interactive blob mess thingie of all sorts of fail that will not allow you to do anything with constantly being signed in to something, online, hiding important access to key privacy and control features - like Windows 8 on a crack binge.

To be frank we are all totally fucked. :P I would say buy a Mac but Apple is no better.

Or linux..

The technical preview really does record your usage a lot too to be honest. I also read the terms. But I don't know how the terms will be for the final release. In this case it does make sense as to how to improve the OS as it's in Beta I'd say... but meh.

Facebook terms are not cool, worth the read.

Google is also quite transparent about your usage recordings also.

Minority Report comes to mind these days with all major tech giant and their policies.

At least it isn't as bad as the NSA. :P

BTW, Windows 10 can have a local user if you don't want to log into anything - unlike Windows 8.1 - that I know of.

Win 8.1 has local user. You don't have to have an MS account.

I never get email from MS.

Yeah, that policy sucks but so do they all. Even if someone says they respect privacy do they? Apple's ceo claims they respect it (here) but there are accusations that they don't. Not to defend MS but "legal process" is likely about search warrants or subpenas.

I prefer Bing for searches but don't like the privacy issues. I just go to the Bing.com site to use it. No toolbar. Duck Duck Go claims they don't track or record anything.

Google is evil. I don't use anything I know is Google stuff if I can avoid it. Tools from Google are used in many web sites. Of course their ads but also ajax.googleapis , google analytics, google tag services, their fonts, and a million others. Google is so evil I would not be would not be surprised if they use "evercookies" and other desperate nefarious methods.

Hmmm, win 10 loaded with online, phoning home, have to be logged in, maybe have to have an MS account? Not good. I don't use the tiles on win 8.1 but they are connected to things on the web. Like one is weather. I should discover how to turn them off or disconnect them or have the firewall block them. This stuff is part of why I'll wait to get win 10. I want to see what people discover about it as well as wait for bug fixes.

You may be right that we're in trouble. Not just online privacy but in everything. If there are no effective counter measures, and fairly soon, we will live in a world where everything you do or say or write will be public. Look what happens already with public statements. Tweet some unpopular idea and you either recant and conform or you lose your job etc. A world where all is public would not be one of saints with nothing to hide but of sheeple who conform in every way to society's idea of who they should be or a government's demands. By "effective countermeasures" I mean force. Not reliance on promises someone won't violate privacy but ways to make it so they can't.

Interesting times. And interesting read.

Maybe growing up without so much privacy will bring conscious to what people do and say - and actually become more private and considerate to other people in the real world.

Found out that my Wacom Bamboo tablet works with trueSpace now (without having to toggle it to Mouse mode) with Windows 10. Awesome. Great fix.

Before, the viewport would glitch on any pen input in windows 7 and 8.

Also found the handwriting recognition is better, not as awesome as Androids Google Handwriting (which also stores all your strokes) but still nice.

You don't need to verify or install with the account - and you can alternatively create a local one with windows 10 - I find it better concerning options over 8. There was a lot in the feedback giving a lot of backlash to all that. Though personally, I prefer the online version so that.. I can mirror computers and settings to other machines.

How to stop some of Windows 10 snooping : http://bgr.com/2015/07/31/windows-10-up ... o-opt-out/
Didn't read all of this but it mentions how to install it with snooping off from the start: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/07 ... -settings/

So it is all so innocent, they just want target advertisements to you? Consider this: At least for web advertisements what if ads were targeted to the content of the web page being displayed? The ads would have key words and when those words, or phrases, are found in a web page the ad might be shown. You are looking at that page because you have some interest in the subject matter of the page so these ads would probably interest you ... without knowing anything about you or ever having collected any data of yours or about you. I propose that this method would work as well or almost as well the spying snooping data mining method. The information everyone is collecting is probably used to target ads but that is not really what it is for.

Honestly that didn't happen to me. I had a few "trial" programs. Win 10 didn't touch anything.
If it is good software I buy it and if it is not I delete it. I got burned too many times buying crap.

I think that clause concerning scanning for malicious programs is what would allow you to activate Windows Defender to thus scan for viruses. You probably would find a similar clause, if not more elaborate in other anti-virus software.

Also, I hear legitimacy for Xbox games is really also what it's for. Which is good for games producers.

Anyway, been testing trueSpace with 10 extensively, I get a graphics rendering glitch that needs resetting of the hardware graphics card everytime my desktop changes with a third party system, but then again this third party desktop wallpaper changer is back from.. the year..... 2001.

Also, a more than 100 node rig will slow things down and sometimes crash softimage on scene Save via a scene library. And more than 50 object sub animated objects will also slow things down.

I guess I have to learn to optimize things as if a game engine if I want to keep on using directX 9 and trueSpace for work, instead of traditional methods elsewhere.

I am using Windows 10 since a couple of weeks ago. Truespace runs more smoothly, and stable than in 7, LE display crashes less as well. So far this OS has lots of pretty noticeable bugs: windows search stops working, start menu crashes, week days are wrong in calendar... backward compatibility works better than ever.

ACDsee does which codecs? I had two codec packs once, and it conflicted due to both trying to decode the same format at the same time. In Sage thumbs you can disable what you don't need - fixing that issue - maybe that is why they weren't compatible?

Yeah..... So far I think 8.1 is the more stable mature version. I like the UI and speed of windows 10 (x2 or x4 times faster at loading stuff than 7).. but 8.1 is also fast and more stable right now.

W10 needs a good service pack, like 8 needed.

The start menu of w10 is better. The UI is better. TS modelside work better than ever and the render is faster for me (before I had w7). All you need is some adds like sagethumb, some driver, some config and you have a good OS for your work. More simple than
the beginnig of first w8 and his new UI.
For me the history is XP, w7,w10. No Vista and w8 with à "beta OS".

@Marcel You think the start menu in Windows 10 is better? I thought it was a mess. In Windows 7 it's a straight forward list where I can add my my programs in a preferred order and the most important folders are there as a link.
In Windows 10 (which I use at work) I had to first get rid of a lot of useless junk in the tile-part of the menu, then re-add most of the programs I use but... had this been on my main PC then there would have been no room whatsoever for all the programs I normally use.
Also the old links for User Folder, Documents, Pictures, etc. aren't there so I have to either add them as a tile (which takes up space) or use the File Explorer button which means using at least 3 times more clicks in order to go where I want to go. Not exactly more efficient, or a cleaner interface or generally an improvement at all, I'd say. :|

This is how it should look. I do use a custom theme for Windows 7.

Other things I dislike about Windows 10 would be the terrible new control panel, luckily the old one is still hidden in there somewhere, it just takes some time to find it. The look of the GUI is a bit of a downgrade from Windows 8 and the customization options are pathetic.
Also I still don't get why windows Update refuses to install updates when I shut down my PC, it always keeps asking me to schedule a restart which is stupid since I only power it down when I leave so that means scheduling a restart for when I end my shift, then waiting for it to restart and then shutting it down again. (start-up is still slow as ever, PC's fault really, not win 10)

Things I do like about Windows 10 are that it shuts down very quickly though. The new task manager is excellent and so are many of the additions to Windows Explorer. The better support for SSDs, multi-core CPUs, RAM over 16 GBs and 64 bit programs is also good but expected. Luckily there are already programs you can download that restrict Microsoft's access to your PC and its dubious monitoring features.

I couldn't care less about the new web browser, OneDrive, the windows store and I haven't used Cortana since me talking to my PC at work would seem a bit odd. :P

Overall for me Windows 10 is only a marginal improvement over Windows 7 and I don't see myself upgrading my main PC any time soon. This install of win 7 has lasted through several hardware setups and has never shown any signs of crashing, spying or slowing down in terms of performance. Seven is still my lucky number

@trueBlue Heh, yeah I used that trick on Windows 7 as well. Still have it in my applications folder I think. I may just do that at my work PC, it's not really that big a deal there though. But it will be a must if I ever switch to Win 10 on a PC here at home.

My dad killed a harddrive with a windows 7 Update, shut it down while it was doing it... wiped the tables of the whole harddrive, not just they system partition. The harddrive was rendered useless, and he had to use a recovery software to get the data back - all unsorted without file structures.

But just so you know, bluescreens usually are driver issues or hardware failure.

Here is a good tool for blocking win 10 snooping. Free. Also works for win 7 through 8.1. https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/

FYI: You can disable this if you want to by right clicking the task bar click customize Notification area and uncheck GWX Hide notification tab and hit ok. It stops the silly popup to ungrade to Windows 10 and hides the task bar icon. I did this the other day as I got tired of closing the windows every time I started the system up. Greetings to all btw. Leroy.
