Re: Extreme Space Freighter Design, Modeling and Texturing
Going with the concept of the main body of the Extreme Space Freighter being that of a tractor that can dock with cargo terrestrially or in space. Several smoothing errors popped or I missed a vertex or two, so may have to redesign the passenger and freight area (rectangular part.)
The concept of a docking tractor is similar to that of a tractor trailer diesel rig, except the trailer exterior is part of the spacecraft as it needs to be aerodynamic and sealed from the hazards of space and air travel.

Still messing around with the Extreme Space Freighter design.
Nothing says power like four, count 'em, four ion powered thruster engines.
Also made an interface coupler that will connect the main ship.

Still tweaking the design aspect, changed things, left some the same.
Nothing says intimidation to your Alien competition like having eight, count'em, eight mega powerful ION thrusters thundering through their skies and into space in your Extreme Space Freighter. Knowing that you just made off with a fortune in passengers and freight.

Re: Extreme Space Freighter Design, Modeling and Texturing
Fooling around with texture and wanted to get some input from you guys on what kind of theme the Extreme Space Freighter should have.
(still not finished with adding stuff - needs some landing pods - vtol - etc)
Should I go with a purely commercial color scheme like the example in the two images below?
Or should I do a theme like the space ships in Alien or some other dark movie?
Or, something in between?
Lemme know, still a few days away from texturing it.

Hehe, that's pretty big. Not as big as my Sentinel Prime though, 4.3 km (2.67 miles) long. Still, how large is this ship in length?

Yeah, but can Sentinel Prime (a giant transformer?) carry passengers in luxury, freight of all kinds all while traveling in space at sub-light speed and then landing on planets with most any atmosphere?
Here's the dimensions of the Extreme Space Freighter compared to the current world's largest aircraft, the AN-225.

Hehe, yeah, I realize that there is a transformer also called Sentinel Prime, when I saw the movie, I actually thought they stole the idea from mejamesmc wrote:Yeah, but can Sentinel Prime (a giant transformer?) carry passengers in luxury, freight of all kinds all while traveling in space at sub-light speed and then landing on planets with most any atmosphere?
However yes, the Ambassador Class Cruiser "Sentinel Prime" can carry passengers in luxury, in fact that's its main purpose. The cargo capabilities of the ship aren't its main function but it can carry large loads and even smaller spacecraft, so yes to that as well. However it cannot land on planets, it is to big for that
Yours is still pretty big though, especially for a spacecraft capable of landing through an atmosphere. The equivalent of this spacecraft in my SPACE 3000 universe would probably be a Sirius-Class cruiser (270m long).
This is going very well, keep up the good work. Please show us more from the interior as well, when it's done

Gonna suspend my WIP for a bit, got too many issues with it at the moment.
Will submit it later on - maybe.

Re: Extreme Space Freighter Design, Modeling and Texturing
Basic design flaws, too many n-gons and tris (which leads to bad UVs), unwelded parts, bad work flow - i.e. parts not named to make post work easier, asymmetrical parts - dunno why.Draise wrote:Oh man, that sucks. What were the issues?
I don't have much experience in the way of making mechanical objects in 3D, so this was a learning experience of what not to do.
Gonna redo it in Lightwave3D as it is a better modeler and has many more utilities to keep organized and for better geometry. This make take a bit while I learn to do both - er uh better.

Re: Extreme Space Freighter Design, Modeling and Texturing
I getcha. I always seem to learn the hard way with mistakes and methods that don't work too! Quite irritating, but you thank yourself later. Hopefully your workflow works out better in Lightwave, I hear it's a great program.jamesmc wrote:
