My computer decided to start up slow this morning. I ran CCleaner on it and it freed 10 gb of hard drive space. Now it runs fast.

You should have borrowed Steinie's barbedwire flail and threatened it.

Most computers react with "warp speed" afterwards.

Good one, I use Ccleaner all the time.. oh and sometimes a good defragment of your harddrives help out!

You can also disable services when the pc start. But you need to know what is important and what is not necessary.

I use ACE Utilities to remove any Junk Files left behind and also to clean the registry.
You will find alot of unneeded registry entries left behind from software installs or even web browsing.
The tool is not free but is rating very high by CNET and PC Magazine.
For defraging I use a free tool by IObit called Smart Defrag as it does way more than what the standard windows defrag tool can do.
Try the smart defrag and you will see a big difference in the way your system runs.

I am using Windows 7 Pro. All the drives had 0% fragmented. 58 gb of free space on the hard drive.

It took 15 minutes to boot up instead 2.3 minutes normally. I will have to monitor in the future.

Well, you should do that more often so that you can be sure that your computer would not run any slower.

Any computer, even the newer ones, would eventually go slower because of all the things that you put right through it and you can do just much in terms of making sure that they do not add up.

And probably the area you have to look at is with the start up programs and those applications that run on the background.

Another option is running MSCONFIG from the Run in Windows.

From there, configure your startup services to the bare minimum. Anything to do with Windows and your Motherboard and antivirus, leave, but everything else probabably can be disabled. This will free up your RAM and CPU on loadup and overall usage.

That helps a lot. Especially after a good time of installing and uninstalling software. More often than not, they leave services.

I used a program HijackThis. I have used it for many years for finding suspect programs.
It works to fine for 32 bit operating systems has problems with windows 7/vista 64 bit operating systems.

Msconfig works fine disabling startup programs and finding programs that do not belong.

You might want to check out you BIOS on Start up. Just be careful messing around in there. Might try resetting to default config and then save an exit. make sure you know how and what to change bios settings back to what you have now. Could be some failing hardware also.
PC tools is good stuff. I use Norton plus PC tools registry cleaner.

Yeah, I usually set the system harddrive in Bios to priority boot, then the rest comes later. So the system loads faster. Sometimes, if your board, powersupply, cooling system and CPU can take it, you can do a manual overclock there. Risky stuff, but it works well (tho I did burnout a RAM stick that way)

I removed BrowserDefender. For some reason it does not work on Windows 7 64 bit Pro.
