Animated DX9 fire material

Post by Hatchetman »

The very first material in the DX9 Material Library. A cool looking fire picture with alphas and a falloff effect. Well, playing with it in the material editor, after clicking the advanced tab, I see many mentions of anumation for this material. But it doesn't animate in my workspace window when hitting the play button. The other actors do their thing, but the fire material stays frozen. Any advice, please?

I was looking at that myself, althought I have not tried it yet. I did notice when moving around the material it does tend to animate itself. What I was thinking my first attempt would have been a cube, or sphere with that material and then key frame the rotation of the object, and I think the material would do the rest.

Unfortunately, I did not have a chance to try this before something came up, but that would have been my first attempt.

I'll try that, I'm gonna put it on top of a torch and spin it around a little, and see what happens. Might be in a little while tho, but thanks for the reply!

well, I tried that, it just looked like the thing was spinning around.. not really like a fire effect.

EDIT - Finally got a YouTube account, see the vid at

Maybe I'll try animating the fire mesh itself.

The animation, moves the texture along it's uv's. So you have to pay attention to the fire texture you're using and the UVs of your object. Noko's the one who created the effects shader so he'd be the one to ask for tips on how to create the fire effect.
