fill end of extruded polyline

Post by automike »

ive drawn a eight sided shape with polyline then sweep it but now the back end of shape is open ,so i spun shape round but how do i fill this end in so its solid shape ,ive tried polygon draw by selecting each vertex then when i get to final vertex nothing happens all i have is the eight selected vertex i want to fill over end ( to help imagine extruding a 50 pence piece laid flat ,the back end is open i want to make solid)
thanks mike

Not sure if I truly understand what you are asking. But, if youare trying to make a flat object visable on both sides then you would need to go to the object. Properties and make it double sided. This would only show the same image on both sides when you flip it. The other option would be to give it some depth with extrude and then put material on each side.

There are better users here to answer how to add a back face in Modeler but this is
how I would create the shape you describe.
I'm not a Model Side qualified user.

thanks for help , yes my dad and me have the same hairdresser and my younger brother on the right also ,
im really just playing with 3d modelling as a photo of a tank will always be the best option to show customer
our line of products , i make the larger fuel stations myself outside with alot of help from the forklift as we only have a small workshop ,then my brother does tanks under 5000 litres inside.

Steinie is correct, the simplest way is to start with a polygonal Primitive.
It's born with both ends intact.

However, to ensure your polyline shape doesn't end up, uh, open ended, the trick is to click the
Convert NURBS patch to polygon (or curve to polyhedron) tool before you use Extrude Tool on it.

Now it becomes a simple polygon, and by right clicking it all the polygonal Point editing tools become available.
Select the top face and click the Sweep icon.(the polygon equivalent of Extrude).

If you want it to remain a NURBS object, then the Cap Tool is what you would use to close off the end.
To use it, right click the Cap Tool icon to bring up the Cap options panel.
Tic the box labeled 'Stitch patch to cap'
Select an extruded NURBS/ polyline shape, and activate the Cap Tool by left clicking it's icon.
Select the end curve on the extruded shape (it will change color as your cursor hovers over it) that you want to close off.
Click the curve, and immediately it is capped.

So, it's a lot simpler to just begin with a primitive as Steinie suggested, but I did want to answer your question in case you run into a situation where a primitive polygon won't do.

thanks spacekdet that was exactly what i was looking for i only used 50 piece as an example , i will be using irregular drawn shaped polylines hardly ever primitive,

you've given me more tools to play with now is there no end to all those icons , ive used 3d max and i found that alot simplier to use and quite intuative UI but i cannot afford a full version of that , i find although hard for me to learn TS seems to have a sort of pull on me , just as i ve had enough and try another program i have one more go ,
then make a breakthrough .
