strange problem
Hi,
I left this on the old forum, and would like to post here, too.
(Thanks, Frootee, for the suggestion, but that wasn't it.)
TS was running fine, the new 7.6 stand-alone version and the older 7.5 - then, the next time I tried to open the program, nothing happened, it got stuck on the title screen and wouldn't go further. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing 7.5 and both versions of 7.6 - the only one that's still running is 6.6. I get a message that says something about 'initialization of the kernal subsystem has failed' Like I wrote, all these progs were running fine a week ago, obviously I've done something wrong - can anyone help with this problem?
I'm running Vista on an ASUS laptop, 64 bit
Thank You for your time,
Second Post:
Yes, tried starting while holding ctrl - still no go. I searched, and can't find 'default.ctx', but then I only have 7.5 ( and the still-working 6.6) on my system. The message about the Kernal subsystem failing appears a few minutes after trying to start.
rrf
I'm hoping someone has had some kind of experience with this?
Thanks,
rrf

Re: strange problem
Tiles reported the same problem once and did this to start the Application?

For what it's worth, rrf, sometimes problems such as this are caused by conflcts between two versions of the same App, if they're on the same hard drive.
If you still have the .exe file of 6.6, why not uninstal that version, and have your virus software do a Registery cleanup. Then install only your 7.6 again.
Worth a try.
Cheers,
Kurt

Re: strange problem
Have you installed any New Programs that may be causing the conflict with tS (maybe a Registry Cleaner)?

Re: strange problem
I installed a registry cleaner after I uninstalled TS, ran the RegTool program, reinstalled 7.6, and still have the problem. I'm no way near a 'tech' guy. Does anyone know what the ' hang' codes in my previous post indicate?
I've already tried going back to a previous 'Restore point' - that doesn't seem to work either
Thanks,
rf

Re: strange problem
Have you tried uninstalling your Registry Cleaner Program from your computer (do not use it). Then, reboot a new trueSpace application installment. Do not have the Registry Cleaner on your computer (especially if it's the FREE version).
Have you tried that?

That's a tough one. My first thought would be similar to others who have already responded that either (1) the Windows registry has orphaned and/or errant entries or (2) one or more required system files have been deleted or corrupted.
I would have recommended that you list the changes that you've made to your computer since trueSpace 7.5 and 7.6 were okay. Something has changed since then and caused the problem and listing the changes may give you some ideas. For example, you may have installed another program which has changed some of the system files that trueSpace needs and removing the offending program may restore normal operation (if the offending program has a good uninstaller).
But the fact that you've gone back to a previous restore point throws a monkey wrench into this thinking. If you went far enough back with your restore point to when trueSpace 7.5 and 7.6 were okay, then it should have fixed the problem if it were in the registry or a system file.
The list of remedies is shrinking quickly. Registry cleaners can work sometimes but they can also do more harm---it depends on how good they are and if they are up-to-date. So I'm not surprised that this tactic didn't work.
What you need now is for one of the trueSpace programmers to help diagnose your system to determine what files are present, what files are missing, and whether your trueSpace registry entries are intact. Unfortunately that kind of help can be tedious and rare.
Here are some more possibilities to consider:
- Your computer is infected with a virus or has been infiltrated by spyware. If this is true, you'll need to fix this problem and may have to reinstall both versions of trueSpace afterward.
- You've updated your video card driver and the new driver is not compatible. The solution would be to remove the new driver and return to the older driver.
- Some sectors on your computer's hard drive are beginning to go bad and are causing some of the required system files of trueSpace to be corrupted. You'll need to test your hard drive (Windows can do this). If it is beginning to fail, you'll need to replace it and when you do, you'll probably need to do a clean install of Windows and all of your applications. However, before you do, you'll need to back up your data files first so they won't be lost.
Finally, as a general rule, never try to reinstall the same version of a program over itself. You should always remove the previous installation first. Otherwise you can screw up the Windows registry with double entries that are never fully removed when you try to remove the program later. Registry cleaners can miss this kind of problem because all entries may still appear to point to valid files.
Best regards, First Light

Re: strange problem
Thank You, First Light, a very comprehensive answer. I also had thought that I may have to back everything up and start from the beginning - Thanks to All for your help with this, it will all work out fine eventually.

Re: strange problem
after uninstall all TS version, open regedit and erase manually all the key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/ you find here all previous Caligari app installed. these keys are not uninstalled by TS uninstaller, ccleaner, regedit or other soft to clean the registry. right click on each caligari trueSpace to erase all the keys, reboot the computer and install TS again.

Re: strange problem
This is almost always a video driver issue. Even if you didn't update your video driver manually, sometimes windows does it automatically. To fix it you'll need to revert to a video driver that works with trueSpace.

Re: strange problem
I am afraid about problem with futur update of the hardware. How many years TS can live if it have no update now?
It would be useful to have a list of incompatibility between TS and hardware. Maybe a thread for that?

Re: strange problem
That's a good point Marcel. As video cards and drivers advance they will become incompatible with TS7.x and so even modelside won't be available. Us TS5 owners are safe until OS's or processors are't compatible. So people who are determined to use TS for years won't have much luck except on an old machine with old drivers.

Re: strange problem
Thanks for all your help everyone.
I solved the problem by utilizing the 'Recovery' option that came with the laptop.
It erased all my files on the main partition, but upon reloading (which is still ongoing
)
Truespace 7.6 loaded and is working fine.
The original problem was probably caused by my own stupidity.
Thanks again,
rf
