Grob Twin Astir II

Post by Steve »

creeeeeeeeeeak

...Goes the sound of my coffin lid, How long has it been...5 months now?

So yes...some finished artwork if you'd like, I've been asking myself what happened to promising to finish F1 car or the PAK-FA or the Spooky Gunship or the couple of soundtracks I've got sitting doing bugger all

I think I told myself to get lost because this happened

Oh yes, it's another plane. A special one though. It's the first one I flew, and this very paint job is the first I flew solo. Glide angle of about 30:1, roll rate of granite block...and much like a granite block it hurts when it lands on you so not suprising this thing's nicknamed "The Concrete Swan". The RAF also use it for giving air cadets joy rides, though they just put some orange paint on the wings and thought they could ge away with calling it something cooler like "Viking T-1" the show offs

Forget getting too many detailed full views since the wing span is enormous so I've filled the space with other things. It's miffed me a bit because I made the yaw strings and Side clear view panels and everything and they don't show up

I also implore you to stare at the glass for a minimum of ten seconds it took f***ing hours to render for no apparent reason and it might start kidding me into thinking it was time worth waiting

heres the full size but be warrned its 3000px wide

That is one mean and clean flying machine!

Well done!

Do you have any blurred reflections or something ticked that it took so long to render?

Five months is a long time!

What are those red things on top of the wings? I do not know much about gliders and don't recall ever seeing them. Do they replace flaps? Also why not model yourself in one of the shots?
What I do know is that these render are really well done.

Why thank you. I essenially had two layers of Shaderlab materials, one is a modified TGGlass and the other Pure Fresnel, on their own they don't take that long...I used Fresnel to make the shine off the fuselage itself but combined it's insane.

Thank you too!

I suppose the reason why I don't model myself or indeed someone else in the shot is because my organic mdoelling skills aren't quite up to the same standard...to the point modelling a person will be aproject in its own right, then theres the texturing issue so until I fix that the mismatch in render quality will be a bit jarring. If that makes sense at all.

Those red things are air brakes, some have both top and bottom airbrakes like you see on the next glider I'm going to model, the Puchacz
and some like the twin just have top surface brakes

The purpose of the airbrakes is similar to that of flaps but not quite. Flaps increase the surfaces area of the wing enabling greater lift for safer landing speeds, slightly steeper approaches to get over obstacles and shorter roll distances, which then retract to remove the drag penalty.
Airbrakes also allow a steeper approach and shorter landing distances, but because we can't just apply power, the only way to gain speed for us is to lose height so we always approach with more speed and height than we need, what those plates do is increase the drag when we extend them, and also effectively 'stalls' that section of the wing and allows us to 'dump' excess height. They also allow us to bleed the extra speed off quickly...some even are 'speed limiting' brakes to stop us overspeeding in a dive. Because there's also less wing generating lift it becomes less reactive to gusts as well. Unlike flaps we can also vary how much brake we have out so we have what we need, when we need it. When the brakes aren't needed they'll just reract back and sit flush with the wing surface

HTH!

Brilliant detail on these models.

I stared at the glass for ten seconds as requested, and to me it looks very good.
