This is a clever and thought provoking theme this month! I am not sure how I'll approach the topic. Being a Cartoonist my work leans towards the lighter side of life. I'm thinking....

James is so fast he was modeling before the challenge started! (Well, there was a sneek peek of the theme in another thread.)

Steinie, lots of poor folks are happy. They'd like more stuff but don't need it to be ok. Well, not the super poor, but "first world" countries have plenty of "poor" who aren't needy ... just not as well off as others. Plenty of room for laughs (My Name is Earl). Of course Poor Land can be filled with cartoon characters.

Brilliant! Instead of entering the challenge you are applying the attributes of many poor folks. Laziness, apathy, procrastination ... Why enter the challenge when you can live it?

I just can't stay away from a challenge.
Ok, I started working on an entry. I don't think it will be humorous, maybe humorless.
I'll let the work itself dictate the direction.

Heck one of the so called "3D Artist" could model a cardboard "box" and call it "Home". How much effort would that take?
Come on fellow Artist, I flaunt in your general direction. Let's see what your made of!

I think the challenge is in poor taste.

The title "Poor Land" makes it sound like

an amusement park. I find that concept appalling.

Maybe it's just me... but I'm gonna weight for

a more uplifting challenge or at least a less flippant

one.

I don't mean to be a downer.. Just say en.

Your right about "Poor Land" sounding degrading however Finis is pretty poor himself so I'm sure that wasn't his intent. It IS a tough Challenge topic to deal with. I'm sure the entries will be in good taste. The topic is a good one, forcing us to acknowledge "Poor" from our own viewpoint. I like tough assignments that challenge my thinking. It forces me out of my comfort zone.

Maybe by looking at poverty with an artist's eyes we will see things we didn't expect.

I chose this theme as something that hasn't been in a challenge but isn't an uncommon theme in art and provides a wide range of possibilities for entries. By emphasizing places, the land, the world, the environment of the poor the theme doesn't require difficult to do characters. I also hoped with 3D artists from all over the world here we might see how it is in different countries.

I'm poor by American standards. I live among poor people but not the hungry or homeless. Some poor are so due to their own faults and lack of effort to overcome them. They deserve no sympathy. Stating that isn't an insult. It is just the truth. Many deserve sympathy for things like low intelligence and mental or emotional problems that keep them poor. They can be dangerous people too. I have seen poor folks become prosperous. They, and I, don't claim someone won't give us a "piece of the pie" or that we are entitled to what others have. We strive to build our own bakeries and bake our own pies. Some are content or happy since they don't want or need material wealth to be so.

We (poor folks) like humor about us. My Name is Earl and Jeff Foxworthy are popular among poor folks. Of course that is humor about people on the upper end of poor in a first world country and not cruel jokes about the really poor.

Why is poverty not material for uplifting art? Show those who are wealthy in love, friendship, strength, kindness, generosity, courage or other virtues. They have so much they don't need money.

Why does a theme have to be uplifting? Remember the theme "Abandoned" and Breech Block's (I think) heartbreaking teddy bear in the trash?

Why does a theme have be something other than what you choose to make it? Use art to show terrible true poverty of starvation and hopelessness or to show the value of other types of wealth or virtues like perseverance and growing stronger from hardship or show poverty of spirit "...all they have is money".

guess its ok to laugh at the plight of there
family's..

Yo mama is so poor that when I saw her kicking a can down the street, I asked her what she was doing, and she said "moving."

Even cruel jokes are funny. Jokes that are somehow detach sorrow from the cruelty.
These people, poor people, even in undeveloped countries, can be full of humor and life. It's never about emotion with these people, your not thinking about insecurities and suicide... You can't afford it. With these people there's always a next day.

Dragneye, Draise: Yeah, if the real world calls then that's what you have to do. I tend to lose self discipline and spend time on a 3D project when I should have been working. Great to have fun and create now but there will always be another U3DA challenge. Great ideas don't have to be in a challenge anyway. They can be independent projects to work on whenever.
