Although it contained no spoilers, I'll re-post my observations about the movie after more people have seen it.

Still haven't seen it...but I did read this article about the 'making of'.
I guess I had better either hurry up and see it or just wait for the DVD release.

Very interesting. Read the article! These guys who delve into mathematics and algorithms, new methods, stereoscopic VFX and all the shizz really has one to the point of tipping your hat in respect. Lot's of ingenuity going on there.. I'd love to get a team of people who could do such amazement, but I think I'd probably get some good script writers first.
Saw it. 2D version. Hmm. Great FX, entertaining, plenty of action, so I can recommend seeing it for fun. I was disappointed with the quality. Don't expect it to be a good movie.
The story was lacking IMO. The components of the theme were neither new in sci fi/fantasy/philosophical stories nor was it a good composition of them. It seemed poorly thought out. Alien used standard issue theme/components but was good.
Despite some high powered talent, most acting was unenthusiastic down to bad, much of the plot was unnecessarily hurried and predictable, and most characters were shallow or not well developed. Potential for depth and interest in plot, ideas, and characters was present but nothing was done with it.
The PC infecting most movies was surprisingly absent. All I saw was co2 specifically mentioned as the atmospheric toxicity culprit (granted the level stated probably would be). I suspect the sequels will be more PC.
There was "gratuitous tech" and "gratuitous Alien". Some tech, while cool, was just there to be cool. Some scenes and themes related to Alien were thrown in to get the Alien factor in there rather than give a new perspective on it.
Was it rated PG? The goriness, violence, and language were subdued which took away some of the grit of Alien.
This is no Blade Runner or Alien but it is fun for action and FX.

I agree with Finis. I saw the 3d version and wasn't really impressed with the application of the 3d. Ship crashes and it looked like someone threw a couple of buckets of debris toward the camera.
The premise and background of the story really works as a prequel to Alien but the pacing and the script were problems. I did think the acting was good but the contrived feeling of the script made it difficult for the actors to really shine. The expository material presented and the character development really seemed rushed and therefore were not convincing.
Noomi Rapace is quite a talent and I look forward to seeing her in other films.
It is still a movie worth seeing TB... it just doesn't "shine" as much as I think it could have.
After all.... a film with Charlize Theron in it is always worth watching. Her part is not that big in this one but she plays her role well. Hoping to see "Snow White and the Huntsman" in the next 2 weeks. The bird effects are enough to make me start looking up Clinton's flocking script.

Yeah trueBlue, it is fun. Watch it expecting a typical summer sci fi action film and you'll have a blast. Just don't expect art.
V3rd3, you make a good point about the script etc. effecting the acting. They weren't given much to work with. I still think the acting was generally lacking but now see that your point is part of that. Charlize Theron earned the "unenthusiastic" award and I thought her performance was below par, script issues or not. Yes, Rapace did well. So did the punk rocker type guy and the archeologist guy was adequate.

Charlize was playing the corporate bitch and having met a number of them thought she played it well. No emotion, no concern for anything other than self interest, total lack of regard/contempt for the crew .... a void looking for power and money.
I will pick the movie up when the DVD goes on sale and look at it again but I thought the performances fit the expectations.
The guy with the weird haircut is a scottish actor (sean harris) that plays an assassin in the series "The Borgias" .... he does a great job in that series.

I agree, Charlize has done much better roles and I wasn't to impressed with her act in this movie. Though it was still adequate.
It seems that the movie re-writes are very apparent to people who expected a lot from this movie. I went in not really knowing what to expect and was pleasantly surprised but to people with high expectations it wasn't as good as they hoped and even an utter disaster to some.
I enjoyed it though, the great atmosphere the movie builds up with mixing music and FX made it to me a breath of fresh air in an other wise repetitive movie industry.
Though apparently Ridley Scott has a neck for re-writing scripts during production: See Robin Hood (2010).
