Is Truespace still valid ?

Is Truespace still valid ?
You can still make nice things with it... its a good modeler just like all the other modelers its well usable !
Second... you can still boot TS even in Win 10 !
So where is the need to rebuild TS ?????
Its not a sculpture tool... never ,meant to be----- if you need that feature get a sculpture or paint tool.... !
It doesnt load millions of polys .... well get a landscape app and use it as a backdrop or group the objects and export from TS as a group..... !
You like Lightworks and it suits your look you are after... OK then use it as it is.... if not export to a different render engine.
You can even render animations inside Lightworks and use them as planes inside other renderers........ !
Do we need a rebuild of TS ----???
I dont think so ! What we need is a few exporters......and for that we probably DONT need the source code !
I would dream of a TS to VUE Scene exporter... that would allow for a great boost for TS and millions more polygons that you could render....... !
OR a TS to BLender exporter and back ?????

A client asked me if I could render an animation inside a points cloud generated from a 3D scanner.
I doubt trueSpace can load and manage a heavy points cloud. Workspace side maybe ? This is a typical example of situation that may come more often in the future, as 3D scanners will become more in use in the industry. We will need a 3D tool that can handle such data and render it.

By the way, did anyone tried to load points clouds from some other softwares into trueSpace ?

You are right but I tell you that I think not everything has to be able to be done in TS..
just like I use Lightroom next to Photoshop....!
I own a 3d printer since 2 months and I do my prototyping in a nurbs software...
I use Fusion 360 to convert from poly to nurbs.....works very well! Even with TS obj files..
You can use Meshlab to make poly models out of your pointclouds..

I would imagine that TS will remain relevant for quite a few years before Blender becomes an easier tool to use and TS goes the way of the Dodo bird? For now, Blender is still somewhat of an oddity in terms of being an easier option then TS is currently.

Another option currently in active development is Anim8or 3d. The author of A8 is in the process of updating his creation and this modeling tool is fairly simple to use and supports text based plugin scripts for extending the usefulness of Anim8or.

well... direcX 12 support would make things more fluid and could handle more polys. Newer lighworks or vray (i.e. without glass bug) that would work within tS would be great.

Not really much to it. But yes, i agree we need more exporto options - something really simple working - like an extension or tsx that would take all tS scene with lightworks materials and covert them to something modern that could render it with features like displacement maping, great hair/fur. Even for animated scenes - who would like to export and render frames one by one.

But still tS is good enough for most, just not catching up with modern highend tools.

That ship sailed a long time ago. There are about 10 of us that use TS regularly and thousands that use blender.

Anim8er and wings 3d are small modeler programs that both have a pretty big and faithful following.

TS is great for low to mid poly modeling and lightworks still works very well. I think once Clinton does some tutorials showing off his fbx, md5 exporters people will see what TS is capable of. I just did some tutorials on how to get objects into torque 3d.

Of course everything working is allowed, but trueSpace is history.

They are about to change it. Blender works at a new UI incarnation with Version 2.8. Might not turn out as the perfect solution, still the old betonheads. And so some of the old crap will surely remain, like the hotkey- and pure speed centered useage philosophy. Which stands more than once in complete contradiction to usability. And it will need minimum a year before we see 2.8. But at least there is work again at the UI and usability front.

And i personally have started a Blender fork to improve the usability and UI, since i don't really trust the involved developers. They have shown too often that they don't have a clue about UI design in the past. When somebody wants to join and help, here's the link *hint hint* ;)

I don't really agree that TS is history just yet. I look forward to the the BFUI option but don't really see it as necessarily a better option then Blender just yet. Blender, though it has a huge following is still a work in progress. I still haven't really gotten into the latest UI of TS 7.6x either. I prefer the older 6.6 model side UI. For what it's worth I'm little more then a casual 3d model making hobbyist and TS fits my needs and knowledge level almost perfectly. I love simple things and have found Blender is far too advanced for my simple tastes. Even if this and any other TS related modeling forums all disappear altogether I'll still continue using TS indefinitely.

I downloaded and extracted the 32bit archive and tried to run it but it gave an invalid 32bit application error. Does Blender have to be previously installed before Bfartists will run? The current OS is XPro service pack 3 btw.

Hm. Bforartists should work out of the box, like Blender. All i did so far is to replace the icons and to change a few links. So when Bforartists doesn't work for you, then Blender should neither. Could you test if you get the same error with Blender too?

Anyways. Thanks for the report. I will investigate into it. Possible that i have broken something with my changes :)
Blender, though it has a huge following is still a work in progress.
Blender is in permanent development. And so is Maya, Max, etc. . trueSpace though is not longer in progress. Which is a problem.

Blender is in some areas still behind trueSpace, that's right. Like Polygon modeling. And of course usability. But is in many areas miles ahead already. Unwrapping, animation, rendering, all delivers better results in Blender. The only thing that really disturbs is the here and there cruel and complicated workflow in Blender. Like having no libraries, or the material system. But that's about to change.
I don't really agree that TS is history just yet.
What you see here at active users at this board is around the current usership for trueSpace. It's a handful. And there is no development anymore since six years. The rest is long migrated to other tools.

That still a few people are using it doesn't mean that it's not history. We also have people still using Pov Ray. But that's simply the past. And another piece for the museum. It's like riding a cool gangster limousine from the 1930s. It still drives. It's cool. It does the job. But is no state of the art car anymore. It's History :)

Tiles, I downloaded and installed Blender 2.75a and it appears to be fully operational. Blender, did complain about my open GL drivers needing to be 1.4 rather then what my XP install currently uses. Perhaps, the issue is related to Bfartist not getting installed and registered the way the OS needs it to be?

You've peaked my interest in Bfartist and I really hope the project succeeds. The primary reason is that I don't care for Blenders current UI. I'd like to help with the testing aspect of Bfartist if the UI can be somewhat simplified for us diehard TS fans. Leroy.

Thanks for testing. And now i see. I did some changes to the standard settings. Cuda is active by default. Wasn't the wisest decision it seems. Will revert this change for the next version :)

But note that XP is not longer officially supported by Blender. And so Blender and Bforartists might not work as expected here and there.

That's the plan behind the whole fork. Simplification. A better UI and a better Usability. Number one that we already changed was the grey in grey standard theme. More to come :)

Tiles, I downloaded the 64 bit version for Windows 7 and it seems to run just fine. The 32 bit version is unimportant as I plan to do away with XPro anyways. I'll start playing around with 64 bit version of Bforartists and post periodic user reports if you wish. Hopefully, things will pan out. Leroy.

FYI: I sincerely hope that you somehow include some basic support for the current Caligari model format. As I recall older versions of Blender actually had a COB import/export script. Altough, even an RS based version would be quite useful for us that continue to use Truespace as an a secondary modeling tool. Leroy.

It's still there. And is even included in Blender 2.42a and later. http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Exten ... Import/COB"

But it was never ported to the 2.5x series afaik. And is for a long time not updated. Not sure if it works. If not then there is still the way across Blender 2.49 as a converter to Blender 2.5x

Awesome Clinton and thank you. Hopefully, Tiles can make this project as a must have by all Truespace and Blender fans. I look forward to getting Blender a bit easier to use. Leroy.

No problem Tiles. I plan on a fairly passive participation more or less following the project as it progresses. Blender itself still mystifies my brain in it's current state. Leroy.
