Old TV: On the blink?

Post by froo »

yeah this is definitely WAY Off Topic!

So we have an 11 year old TV, CRT. Looks like it's fading. On some things like CNN.com it looks pretty bright, other things it looks like it is really hard to discern shadows, especially in film scenes with low light. I am thinking, this TV will not 'pop' like the last one. Rather, it will be a very slow fade-to-black. I dunno. Maybe we are getting accustomed to the faded picture, since it appears to be such a slow fail. Then again, maybe it's ok.

Anyone else had this problem? We're using it as long as we can but eventually it has to be replaced.

Thanks!

I suspect cat urine. I had this cat that thought the vents on the back of my TV set was a place to relieve itself.

just saying...

Are you running an analog signal converter or straight digital on your cable? Some of the converters affect the quality of the picture.

Does it get hot when it fades? If so, likely the CRT is degraded.

Unusual for anything on CNN to be bright.... at least it's not FOX.

Heheh James. Well, I don't think there's room for the cats to get up there; plus they are older and not big on jumping on stuff. It's more of a 'pullup/scramble up' type of thing. :)

Thanks v3rd3. I'll check the temperature of the TV. When we turn it off after it's been on quite some time it does not feel hot.
We use a digital box. We're just half-expecting a failure due to the age of it, plus it experienced several moves, at least one cross country.

It sounds like your "contrast" is going. Is this adjusted through a menu on screen or a knob on the unit?
11 years is pretty good on electronics with 20 years being "old" You can pickup a pretty cheap Vizio flat panel screen TV today with a much better picture, lower wattage usuage, high definition picture, and using less space in the room.

(My Dad was one of the pioneers of television for RCA. We had one of the first tv's when it looked like an oscilloscope. He was one of the technicians of the very first broadcast.)

I long for the days where as a child I would sit for many minutes watching the "dot" of the switched off tube TV slowly fade away.

Finis, maybe. I dunno. The TV doesn't like Fox news either.

Thanks Steinie. We've been talking about doing this for some time now. We need to be informed when the time comes, as opposed to not having a clue.

James, we had a knob-turner too. In fact, when I had my first computer (Commodore 64), I used a black and white little 10 inch TV I think for the video.

In college I had a neighbor who was so damn lazy he had a really long bamboo stick that he used to change the channel while laying in bed.

When we do replace the TV we'll be able to rearrange the room too. Get a little more space out of it I think.

The realy bad thing I hated about the tube televisions was that they were very unhealthy due to radiation...... ! ;)
I couldnt get a new flat screen soon enough !
I have a small one and it doesnt take to much power either so in the long run I probably even saved a dime or 2.. !
Same with my computer screens I used to have burning eyes after a few hours working with Photoshop.....
I dont anymore because i´ve got flat TFT´s....!

Cool Rayman.
The energy savings sound attractive.
Maybe once the dust settles and the smoke clears from our current events, we can put more thought into this and possibly replace the old TV. Gotta get headshots done, followed by prints from them. That's the big thing at present.

you only save energy if you dont get a to large one... the big ones use much energy.......
