Post by RAYMAN »

SMC #59: Flying plane or Zeppelin
This Challenge is to create a nice flying plane or Zeppelin.

1) Use any 3D software you choose.
2) Create the model(s) within a 4 hour time limit.
4) You may enter as many times as you wish.
3) Your entry will also include a wireframe screen grab before SDS (subdivision) has been applied. This is included to help others learn modeling techniques.
4) Include time spent, software/version and render engine used with your submission.
5) Post one render per entry at 800 x 600 pixels.
6) Render, Lighting, and Texturing are not included within the 4 hour time limit.

Deadline: the end of February 18th 2011. If it's too much or too little, it can be adjusted.

This is my entry. A biplane model in balsa wood. Modeled in Hexagon & rendered in
truespace. I must disqualify my self as it took more than fours hours as the model
in hexagn would not import into truespace or carrara as it some how got currupted.
I could work on it in ok in hexagon but exported model was alyyays corrupted. There was
a problem with the way I created the wing ribs and I think I grouped too objects too
many times in hexagon or something,

Any way I kept working on it and replaced a lot of the model shapes. Thats the way you learn by making mistakes.
I guess I could start over and and easily complete another one in less that four hours but I'm too tired

That's a pretty cool bi-plane, fahembree. Nice work.

Y'know, a plane was the subject mater for the very first SMC I ever entered. I was just a beginner back then and it was a darned site harder than it looked too. Check out my "The Spitfire Club" image in my gallery if you want to see how I did.

Mmm, might just have to give this one a bash.

Here's my entry. Yep, it's a flying plane (and there are a few cylinders in there too).
It's done in tS6.6 and it took about one hour and 20 minutes for everything.

My second entry - barrel plane.
trueSpace 6.6, about three hours.
I thought I posted this on Wednesday but I don't know what happened. Maybe I didn't press submit or something. :) So I added some more stuff on the plane and I'm trying again.

My last entry for this SMC (I have too many already) - metal plane frame. There are three barrels in this one. :)
trueSpace6.6, one hour and 40 minutes.

And there's still time for a few more entries, people, come on!

Here is my entry for the SMC, a boeing 747-400. It took me a couple of restarts because for some strange reason, whenever I do a model that is going to heavly rely on SDS to get the right shape, I always start with too much geometry. So, my top modeling tip - less is more. Anyways, all modeled in tS 7.6 (modelside) UV'd in modo, textured in Photoshop and rendered in tS with a mix of IBL and HDRI. Time taken about 3 hours for the model and about 8 hours for texture work.

It's last minute but here is my start on a sopwith camel....

modelled using moi with blueprints from the-blueprints.com

I am trying to fix a startup crash problem with 3d Coat... so I may not get to texture this in time, or put together final scene.

If I am too late go ahead without me.

This SMC started slowly and now it is very interesting. :)
@Rayman: it is the shadows of the plane we can see on the mountain? Maybe you need to edit the picture to erase the shadow. (the mountain is very big compared to the plane in the reality)

yeah probably ... I used a local light too its that probably..... its not a shadow from the aeroplanes its a shadow from the stripes behind the planes....
Well I´m not on time for changing that anymore.. but will for my own renders.. thanks...
