Which is the Better render for this: Yafaray vs Blender
It's Like a blind taste test:
Render A:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6k-Cna-MJeE&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6k-Cna-MJeE&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/youtube]
Render: B:

I think I like the top one better.

Render "A" has a ceramic look and Render "B" is
sparkly. I think "A" gets my vote.

Karthogen I think the Render B better than the A. The A looks like ceramic or plastic and much diffuse or something like that, the second look like an Rock solid asteroid and in my perception it's better.

Neither looks like an asteroid to me. I'd take A because it is not sparkling.

I was looking more for a larg chunk of Iron, since that would be the planet killer that would not burn up in the atmosphere. It really wouldn't be so shiny without a polish, but it looks like crap with just a flat difuse.

I'd use phong reflective shader with a photo map of a real asteroid or a moon wrapped as a texture and bump.

Re: Which is the Better render for this: Yafaray vs Blender
It is not a problem of textur but a problem of light: an asteroid can be glossy or mat. it depend of the material (ice, carbon, metal,...). We have only one sun in our system. And only one light to see an object in the space. There is no atmosphere, so no penumbra. Photos from deap space are very contrasted. The shadow of the asteroid merges with the background and if you can't see all around the object it will be more real.

I have been heavily reliant on phot maps so I was attempting to create the material from scratch with just a bump map that I consolidated from multiple crater photos.

went with the photo uv mapped. Any comments or critiques are more than welcome, I think the specular still looks odd.

Re: Which is the Better render for this: Yafaray vs Blender
Depends on what you wants, do you have specified the material of the asteroid? Still looks like ceramic or some kind of metal or plastic because of the reflectance, if you want a rock asteroid (most of them are made of this) you want to make it diffuse with no reflections because the rock absorber the light and not reflect it. The specular is something that you just need to change and test several times till reach the result

I want it to ultimately look like a large chunk of Iron in space. I may have to add an additional layer of normal rock and just let some veins of the iron show through.

Needs some bump mapping, the specular highlights don't seem right

Re: Which is the Better render for this: Yafaray vs Blender
For some reason this is giving me just a lot of issues.
Thank you for the comment weevil, I realized I was missing a specular map for this one, I just figured out how to do that. for some reason the Bump STill just doesn't seem right. I also realized I was realy stretching my textures with my UV map, so I tried to fix that.

So I think I finally fixed the Bump and the stretching on the texture. I beleive I hid the seams pretty well but, let me know if you see them.

I still can not decide on the specular, I am trying to get a huge chunk of metal in space.

Re: Which is the Better render for this: Yafaray vs Blender
Just my opinion, but I think it's still too shiny. It may be the scale. It reflects/refracts (whatever) too wide/long an area at any given moment. The reflected area should be tighter as the light hits it, and have more 'reflective detail' per square meter if you're going for massive.
