Help needed please! :-)

Post by PhilipG »

Hello there :bananahi:

I am very new to trueSpace and 3D modelling. Can anyone please help me with some basics?

I have downloaded the trueSpace 7.61 app from the Caligari website. I also applied the "unofficial" Rosetta update.

1. Where is the user manual? Is there a link to it?

2. From reading the FAQ here, I found a link for the "full" version of trueSpace (WorkSpace+Modeller). This crashes on load, before displaying anything. The Rosetta (no Modeller) version loads just fine. Does anyone know whether this is graphics card-related (I have a reasonably old one, with an older pixel shader version) - or is it a known problem with something else (if so I presume there's a workaround)?

3. If I click the X on a toolbar it disappears. Is there a shortcut or menu to bring it back? I have used the show-toolbar script supplied with the Rosetta update, but that seems a bit of a long workaround.

4. I have been looking through the version 7 tutorials - well, what I imagine should be the first one: "Getting Started with trueSpace 7". Some of the things the narrator does just don't work with my version. For instance, right clicking on a library titlebar does nothing. When going into node edit mode, apparently a node-edit toolbar should open up. None does.

5. Please forgive me for not going through all the tutorials before I ask this but I am creating an icon for game that I'd rather finish sooner rather than later. What I would like is to design an inventory item (say, a pair of pliers) and have it spin around (perhaps while they are opening and closing) and export this animation (either as a movie or a series of stills). Can anyone point me to the best tutorial for this?

6. Okay, last one: is all trueSpace modelling done by stretching and shaping other objects? Or is there a way to do a 2D model and then extrude a 3D shape from that? Again, please point me to the appropriate tutorial if there is one.

Many thanks! :worship:

The pdf manual is in a folder \PDFMan just off of the Truespace root directory (i.e. the directory where you have installed TS7.exe....

You are most likely correct. The model side is the older Truespace environment. The Workspace side is written to use DirectX so I suspect as long as your card can handle DX9 the workspace will run.

The script is the shortcut to the long way of doing this....

Some of the TS7 tutorials were created for version TS7.1 so there are some minor variances with 7.6. The right click on the library menu items should bring up a dialog though.

I suggest you find the appropriate section of the pdf manual and read through it carefully.

I think the quickest start would be to go through Jack Edwards Organic Modelling tutorial.

The workspace side does not have the kind of tools that you are looking for here. The modelside has a tool called the draw panel where you can draw curves and extrude the shape with various controls.

In regards to the last question, workSpace does not have a lathe tool or path tools like the Model side did. The workSpace side does however have sweep and extrusion tools and many more powerful tools to make your pliers.

No, it isn't. :( There is no such folder. In fact, a search of the whole c:\ drive for .pdf files doesn't show it up.

This is after installing using either the standard version (tS761B8Std.exe, 92,420,203 bytes) or the workspace+model version (tS761B8.exe, 132,872,499 bytes). I'm installing onto XP with the latest SPs and patches.

Is there a link to the .pdf on Caligari's site?

Now I have a new problem: I uninstalled the workspace+model version, then tried to reinstall the standard version. That now also crashes on load (it didn't before)!
The script is the shortcut to the long way of doing this....

Ha-ha, okay, thanks! :)

Thanks - will give it a go! :)

Okay, great. The workspace+model version does work on another PC I have access to, so I may use that. :)

Thanks for your help!

Thanks, I'll take a look at that tutorial and then see which I find better. :)

Weed you can't upload files from caligari and release from download, it is illegal. :| We're trying to convince Roman to give us the license.

Anyway thank you for the links and Merry Christmas!
