Thinking fly by on this entry, just getting started. Solar system is mine including Earth, astroids I downloaded and wrapped the textures on them.

Good to know you join this contest!
The atmosphere is too thick adn the clouds sphere should be a little large than the Earth one (what I can't see if you did it). The Sun is great, how do you did that glow effect? And why Jupiter has a glow effect? Probably you don't want this to be totally scientific (as mine WIP too) but if you want you should scale it properly.

Looks very good for my eyes.

Don't forget it is a ANIMATION contest. Ok, it comes better if also the models & materials looks amazing but the focus is (in my eyes) the story and the animation. If we had 6 month for each contest these details are more importend but in this short time the priority is more on the animation himself.

The thickness of the atmosphere of the earth is 1500 km but only 50 km is observable from the space. If you draw a earth with a diameter of 100 mm, the atmosphere have a thikness of 0.42 mm!. Seen from space, it is as if the Earth were a painted ball with a very clear outline and hard contrast. it is the same effect when you see the moon. We have a misconception of reality because of the 3D animations that always represent the same mistakes. when men can live on the moon, they will not have the same vision.
However, the sun should be more disruptive and have a hallo of light increases. this light is hidden when you look at the sun through the Earth's atmosphere. But this is not exactly reality: the image must be darkened considerably to be visible to the human eye or we would see a blinding white ball.
we are so accustomed to false images, when we see the reality it seem wrong. it is useful to know the reality before making an artistic interpretation. but it can achieve the same result. the important thing is to have consciense.

All very good points, yeah the atmosphere on my Earth would probably crush you . To get realistic makes it unrealistic due to how we have been exposed to media over the ages. I am hoping to have some kind of good flow and that is about it so one can imagine the rest what ever that may be. A space ship, a dream, science thought etc..

Sspace seems to be a world calm and soothing. The reality is less poetic: it is a hell with searing temperatures in light and extremely cold in the shade. Watch without glasses makes you blind. Your body can be traversed by lethal rays. And if you want to go out without protection, you explode in seconds. a wonderful world!

Now that should make us appreciate our little home world better. Here is possible next home for humankind, which doesn't look all that appealing to me but a little terraforming, some plant life, who knows. Here is Mars using displacement mapping which is somewhat exagerated to show effect.

Just a little question Noko...
Displacement map is better to use than bump maps?
Are you using Workspace or Model side?

Displacement mapping actually changes the polygon surface which can create shadows but also means additional geometry.
Bump mapping doesn't add geometry and gives the appearance of a bumpy texture by modifying the pixels on the surface.

Note that bump mapping on the workspace side really means normal mapping. You may want to convert any greyscale bump maps to normal maps.

Thanks! This is Workspace side and render. Displacment maps work great with terrain and in this case a planet. Now file size for just Mars object is 21mb :o, so things can add up quick with high polygons and texture maps. So for something like this closer shots would be better with displacement maps and far shots with other stuff better with normal maps because of available resources. Hope that answers your question.

Worked on Sun animation using (water shader), also a displacement type animation for flare like effects which needs some work. Anyways zip file is a .mwv, if viewed please let me know what you think. Thanks.

From the point of a animator - excellent work - i love it.

Thanks you two, kinda funny as well. Anyways I love the animation on Star Trek Voyager opening track with the sun which I wonder now how accurate that is. I was trying to copy that, of course not even close :D. I might be able to do a displacement map animation by using a render to texture camera, that is the only way I can see in animating a texture to displacement map vice moving a UV map. So much more work tonight.

It is good if you are not too near the sun. It is difficult to show animated sun with animated bump mapping because most of the movement on the surface are vertical (from center to space) like curved explosions who return to the surface. it look like ink in the water. Maybe planes with animated texture and alpha mask can simulate this. it is an interesting problem to solve and could be an entire subject for a contest. ;)

Very nice work Noko.

A suggestion is, see if you can make the wave/swirls, tighter/shorter or smaller. From the pics I've seen of the sun in motion, it looks like there are little 'oceans of waves' all over.
Hope you can understand what I'm getting at.

Please let me know what you think on submitted animation in the 2010 01 animation contest thread. You probably will need to go to YouTube and view at 720p to see sun animation. I figure, really don't know :D Sun surface is all liquid, rather hot liquid at that which should have some rather huge wave motion going on.

The animation is great, short but great! I liked the mood, like something will happen but didn't.
I think you could do some explosions, that are more dense than that glow, and also faster.

The animation looks good. It gives the impression of immense size and mass.

Agree with Dragneye about the texture/bump should be smaller. I think that an animated texture/bump would have been good.

It does seem that something is about to happen. The music gives it that feel and the for me the speed of the motion adds to it. Not too fast or too slow. It is like the beginning of a movie where the big threat or event is revealed in the first minute.

Here is the idea it gave me. Feel free to use it if you like. Mercury not seen yet ... the camera moves along revealing the Sun and continues. Mercury enters the view but something is wrong. Dust is moving on its surface and up into a thread going into space. The camera moves and the view expands to show the thread spiraling into a small black hole. Behind the black hole we we see a similar effect and other distortions of the Sun's surface. The black hole is moving rapidly and hits the Sun ...

Thanks you two! Like the story line improvement ideas. I will see what I can do tonight for final day. Thanks!

Oh, there is an animated texture bump going on, only really visable viewing at 720p. If I go smaller it would be even more hard to see. I will see if I can find a good balance there. May try displacement idea as well which would give volume to the interactions on the Sun's surface.

Coming up with better and better explosions, nothing to show yet. Too late to incorporate into animation for challenge. I think I will continue on though, a funny story came to my mind dealing with this so now I am committed. :)

This was a very interesting project and I am glad I was able to submit piece. This should be final, did do a grammar update as a note since there was way too many dumb errors. Hope you all enjoy the outcome. I used both sides of tS to make the video. So everything was rendered on the WS side except the photon torpedoes. The resulting WS renderes where then brought into the model side by way of the background shader. The photon torpedoes was animated omni lights with lens flare. I was going to use motion blur but since I had virtually everything moving around from each other it just caused everything to blur, maybe next project. Since I was planning on using motion blur I doubled the frames on the WS side in order to have a better motion blur calculation and literally had over 7000 individual frames to process. On the model side I took those frames and made animation files out of them at a rather slow speed since everything was strechted out on the time line on the WS side. This gave a good benefit on video editing side as an after thought since I could shrink down the track sizes to any speed I needed to sync stuff up. So the plan was motion blur which didn't work for the given content but found having the extra frames rendered can be beneficial in the editing phase. Well I hope that makes sense in the end. Viewing video at 720p full screen maybe best. More later.
