Clay Shader? (Alternative to SimbiontTS)

Post by frank »

Piddling around with the SimbiontTS clay shader again and wanted some feedback for a realistic shader that has some level of detail.
I know I can increase the UV reps, but then I have recognizable tiled patterns and seams right down the middle of a character.
So I keep it at a single rep, but have a look at the quality. It looks very nice from a distance, but not very good at all up-close.

The only other thing I know to do is to use a custom texture map (photo of real clay) and matching bump map, with special care over the reflectance shader to get a clay/plasticine look.

If you don't know of any alternative clay shaders, any feedback with regards to dialing in settings using standard shaders would be appreciated!

Dribble may be the solution.
With Dribble you can use a bump map to generate a very accurate displacement mapping. Also, Dribble's shadows are great for film looking animations like yours !

Here is how a simple cylinder looks with Dribble's displacement map :

I used Dribble at one time, but wasn't sure if it still worked.

Don't you have to run the 3Delight server and all that jazz in the background?
Would be GLAD to look into this, as I used to enjoy using Dribble, but I thought it was no longer working! PLEASE HELP! :D :D :D

I've apparently still got Dribble (and 3Delight)... but when I fire up a test render, I'm getting super basic shading. No shadows. (And no 3Delight watermark, which I used to get in the event the 3Delight server wasn't running.)

I'm not even seeing a way to run the 3Delight license server. If I recall, I had a (.bat)ch file for that at one point.

I have 3Delight (or some of it) installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\3Delight, but no sign of the "licserver" file.
AND it looks like the standalone 3Delight can no longer be downloaded from their website. :/

Thanks! I actually saw that thread, but the 3Delight download link doesn't work.

You will find informations about dribble installation files here.
With the new 3Delight installation process, you no longer require having the server mode running in background with their licence issues. It is all transparent.

Thanks, Emmanuel!

I followed the install instructions, restarted, and gave it a go. Getting nothing but bland renders, so something is definitely wrong.

At any rate, I appreciate the help!

It looks like a compatibility issue with your system. Some 3Delight version goes wrong with 64bits system. I don't remember the version in this pack.

I currently run a Windows8 x64, my 3Delight version is 11.0 and I can run any Dribble version with success (on this computer that's the old 1.04wip080808).

You could give a try with version 11.

Thank you, Emmanuel!

Using version 11 seems to have fixed it. I'm not able to get that displacement mapping going, but at least I'm getting shadows now. :)

UPDATE: If I use the 1.04wip Dribble tsx, I can get displacement mapping. :)

First attempt.
Definitely warrants some tweaking, but for a few minutes of fiddling, it seems like Dribble should yield some great results.
