Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
i think the tail of the aircraft would be better if it were an extension of the fuselage and not shifted.

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
Believe it or not, the original (called Ka-7) used to be that way early in design but they decided to go with the bi-plane design since it made it more stable in the air. The image however is not a real image, it a very well-made CGI picture created (I think) by Russian historians who were recreating various prototypes based upon the original.
Here is the original:

Very cool looking model. Question, should the propellers be bigger? Seems for such a big plane the props should be bigger.

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
@Marcel
Yes you are right, I've also seen that image, it's rather confusing since there aren't that many images of this aircraft and they are all slightly different. Since I went for a version based upon the original K-7, mine might be a bit different. Unfortunately, I didn't find the website with those images (yours being one of them) until today...
Anyway, it's not finished yet so I can still change it
@rjeff
I think they should actually be a bit smaller (on my model), if you look at the image anyway... Then you are probably right about it being more realistic if they are bigger.

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
sure it is more interesting to do something different. why not a helicopter propeller to help take off this big baleen?

This is my current process, I'm going to leave my computer alone for a while since it's getting a bit overheated.

Impressive modelling work Mikom.
When finished you got a lot of work to do on the texturing.

Texturing isn't really my strong point. I have added a simple texture to the model already but nothing fancy.

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
The first thing I would like to say that with computer graphics everything is possible.
But as a glider pilot I have a doubt that this airplane will fly. The front area of the wings seems to thick. The air resistance will be huge. The thickness of the wing profile are designed for the aircrafts speed. A thick wing profile is for slow airplanes and a thin is for fast jet planes.
I think you should make the wingprofile a litter thinner despite the original drawings. I think thats why they didn't build the airplane.
I have searceh the web for some guidance. To the left there are a picture of some wing profiles of some wingshttp://en.wikipedia.org.
/wiki/Airfoil
This is only a little remark. You have done a very good work!!!!!!

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
@Tommy
I couldn't agree more, but realism aside, it's a cool aircraft. I just made it based upon the original design
Actually the real reason they didn't continue is because the original (K-7) crashed and everyone on board died. There were loads of blueprints of prototypes lying around and this is just one of them. I think another was a civilian transport with a built in hotel and spa
Also, here is the current status of my Ka-17, as good as finished. Since I'm not much of a texture artist or a texturer it will have to stay this way...
PS, I might still make a scene. Stay updated

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
Yes sky captain! i like this atmosphere of science fiction of the 50s. also flash gordon from 30s. I have a nice original collection of comics from this period. digital processing can recreate this creative world. not need blood and manic editing. just beautiful pictures. action is often violent, but always with a touch of poetry. that is the style of 50s. I think it is because of the end of World War.

The world wars were really a certain turning point for the western world, I only wish that we should have learned more, at least the Americans. Or maybe it's because the Americans put an end to the war that they got this delusion thinking that they can go around doing whatever they like.

Just for the record I am an American and I find your remark very offensive.MikomDude wrote:The world wars were really a certain turning point for the western world, I only wish that we should have learned more, at least the Americans. Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
I didn't mean the American people but more the American government, the leaders. Since they start wars all over the world (maybe I'm exaggerating) when they could just seek a peaceful solution. For example the war in the middle east, there isn't enough oil to go around for everyone, true, but then put more money into looking for alternative energy sources instead of marching over there and pretending they're there to help.
It's all a balance of power and people like you and me haven't got anything to say about it. I don't blame you for living in America, it's just that your government have got the wrong idea about how to run a country.
Also, I already see this going way further than it needs to so I suggest either moving it to "Off Topic" or ending it right here and now

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
difficult and complex topic that would be better not to develop here. Unless you are expert and objective. with my limited knowledge I do not venture to approach a discussion that can hurt people.
it is best to continue this interresting work of modeling.

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
Very wise thing to say Marcel.
I also like to ad that I didn't mean to offend anyone, it's just that it's so pointless with all of these wars and it's not wishful thinking to say that there should be no wars.

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
"ending it right here and now" People with those kind of opinions are usually in favor of ending discussion/debate before other views are voiced.
Over and over again I see one side, that side, voiced/written everywhere, regardless of appropriateness, and then the other does not reply due to politeness, or respect for the venue being inappropriate, or even outright censorship, etc. So one view goes all over the web (etc.) starting fights and then it is all the other side's fault if they meet that challenge. It reminds me of that quote about evil succeeding because good men did nothing.
Maybe the side that nearly always starts this should start it in and off topic thread instead of just anywhere.

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
I don't think you quite got the point, I meant end this discussion because 1. it doesn't belong here and 2. because it makes people go at each other for no reason at all. I can already see that you're starting it by calling a reply to this thread but it might be best not to continue at all.
And yes, I know that I probably shouldn't have responded to this but I feel it more important to say that it's better to be friends than have an interesting discussion.

Re: Ka-17 "Flying Tank"
So you are doing exactly what I said. You started it and then you blame others for replying and call for silence. (Note that I'm not even making any statement regarding the views you expressed. I'm noting a pattern that I often see and some of the less sophisticated techniques used in it.) I will end my posts on that stuff with this one.
