Here is a small test..

So far it works, there is an issue with this model and is you cannot move the pages around the scene.. is a problem on the pivot that i'll try to fix later..

The trick is use Morph and keyframes, in a first attempt i tried to script the movement but is a waste of time, keyframe is much more easier and customizable than any logic..

Regards

i made a small render.. IMO it looks good :)

about your question, yes and no.. i selected the 2 verts of the paper and then used the smooth tool to pick the others but with less intensity. that helps a lot sometimes.. :)

I would just use simple deform anim on a quad divided plane. Matter of 5min.
