Bringing 3D to reality!

Post by LeonRegis »

Today we have some methods as resin models, augmented reality, holographic systems (very limited yet).
Do you know in profundity those methods or know more? Expose your knowledge about that here...

Thanks

I know different method to do resin model because i need often a real model for my job. There are very littles machine to do that. But the biggest i know can do a floor of a building in one part! The technic used depend of what you want but the subject is too large. If you have particular question...
For the augmentedl reality, it need other thread too. I think there are thread about this in caligari forum. in resume, augmented reality is the frontier between reality and virtual reality. very short resume.

Thanks marcel,

This topic is for a panoramic view... You can say what you want about this subject here, doesn't matter if is a specific post or a embracing post. Just to introduce.... tell me more about this machines 8-)

The process is called rapid prototyping ...... it is done mosty with resin or wax like for jewelery and the file format that may use
is the stl file format but you have to see if the form doesnt have any holes.... there are some software to find problem zones....
here is a video of the process......
Other then that there are cnc mashines that cut from a block...

Thanks for the information RAYMAN.

One of my dreams is have one of that machines at home, but they are too expansive :D

you dont have to buy one you can use services and they are´nt even that expensive for small objects...
We make jewelery with them......

When you folks have a chance you may wanna take a very thorough look at this related site link here:

http://www.bruvel.com/sculpture/index.html

That is one site that was a massive eye-opener to me concerning the financial potential and actual workflow considerations involved in converting my digital 3D Models into Real World Physical Model Art, at a profit rate worthy of the work.

"Inspiration" you could call it! :D

RAYMAN I just think that will be hard find those companies here in Brazil and for a nice price.
Anyway I just found this 3D print, may it's a good thing for who want and need print 3D models all the time, of course it's better use a service if you don't do it all the time... :D

Just saying...
Thinglab is a company based in UK, I just discovered it now, but I think is one of the best 3D printing and scanning company.
If it supply here in Brazil I would like to win a 3D printer in this Christmas

By the way folks...

you don't need to get the trueSpace Conversion Plugin to simply convert your trueSpace (or any other format) 3D Models to STL format (for easy Rapid Prototyping in StereoLithography Format used by most manufacturers), simply grab Meshlab, it;s free, and not only converts from nearly any format to STL, it also has special tools to prepare the mesh properly for realworld STL format uses.

http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/

Enjoy!

Yeah meshlab is great but there are some freebees in the net that can help you find holes and bad spots...
so just google and try to find them.. I found some a while ago but cant remember where...

Yes there are a few now and the more the better... I do love free tools! :)

I guess it may have been a while though since you last looked at the Features Set of Meshlab, it has been undergoing very extensive rapid development recently so you may wanna take another look now, It has become a very useful, robust, unique, and capable toolset. :)

As a tool initially designed to address myriad issues with the analysis and reconstruction of scanned 3d point clouds into surfaces, it is quite capable at locating, identifying, and analyzing the intended as well as accidental nature of common relationships between vertices, surfaces, edges, and holes, particularly where such characteristics may adversely effect a model intended in the end for STL export to manufacturing pipelines.

Here is a partial quote from the Features page linked above for instance:
Mesh Cleaning Filters:

* removal of duplicated, unreferenced vertices, null faces
* removal of small isolated components
* coherent normal unification and flipping
* erasing of non manifold faces
* automatic filling of holes

Remeshing filters:

* High quality edge collapse simplification (even with texture coords
preservation)
* Surface reconstruction from points (a ball pivoting variant, marching
cubes and poisson's reconstruction)
* Subdivision surfaces (loop and butterfly)
* Feature preserving smoothing and fairing filters
* Holes filling

this is the link for ordering a kit to build your own reprap machine. I am not sure if anyone here has actually tried this so I am not sure how reliable any of this is, but it looks nice.

2 years ago, the price was more than 18000$. today you can have it for 6000$. But these machine are enought too big for one person. The problem is manufacturing needs of a big market to develop a small machine cheaper. I think this is not possible before several years (after the crisis!). They will not with resin too toxic for a home or a office. They will use powder and laser. Powder have the advantage to create colored object, metal aspect, etc...
It's very exciting to see a real object created from your modeling work. I prefer that than a good rendering even if it is photorealistic. Able to touch what you create is the best way to see the errors, especially for functional objects. This reinforces your experience and how to create 3D for industry. It is totally different than create an objet only virtual. These two ways of working are complementary.

Marcel you're right and yes tech products gets cheaper every day and second in some years who wants will have a 3D print as a normal print today and powder of course are the best way to do that, it's colored and not toxic! It's soo cool that we can even play with a 3D print and create toys to play it's something fantastic in each way :superbanana:

Have any of you tried Shapeways.com? You build the model, upload to thier server, and order "prints". It is a P.O.D. (Print On Demand) service kinda like Cafe Press or Zazzle. The prices are very reasonable, and they have various resins and metals to choose from.

Owning one of these machines is too expensive (at the moment) for mere mortals, but the POD option is nice.
