Re: 3D Coat Update
You mean the newest update or 3d Coat in general.theuns wrote:has anybody used it in depth to tell us if it is worth while?
3d Coat in general is awsome and to keep up with the latest point releases is a question of if you need the features......
same as with zbrush they keep making it better but its a question of features........
one needs it badly the other not at all.....
I just got the heads up from the 3d coat company yesterday so not much in depth use possible.

Full price it's $285, upgrade price from version 2 is $60.
Not cheap but excellent value for the features as it's about half the price of zbrush.

The new texturing features look promising too.

Re: 3D Coat Update
i see that the educational version is only $140 but even that is a lot...
the demo download is valid for 30 days but can be used after that with some limitation...
from what I read, you actually 'paint' your entire scene or object? so does that mean you load the whole scene or object from whatever 3d program you use and paint it in 3dcoat?
one of the limitations after 30 days is that you can't export, what would you normally export? the painted object so you can render it in you own renderer? does 3dcoat have its own realtime renderer to show what the paint will look like?

Re: 3D Coat Update
I bought 3d coat for the 3d painting, uv mapping and sculpting features.
Admittedly I bought this some time ago and have been following the upgrade path.
The value of the price you pay is that, for example, once you have version 3 all upgrades to version 3 are yours for free. The only upgrade costs, to this point, are upgrading from prior full versions.
The "dot" releases have some bug fixes but are mostly incremental feature releases.
I have a long way to go before I am where I want to be with this product but what I see so far is quite impressive for the cost of the software.

Re: 3D Coat Update
At the start it's not so much like 'paint' as build with clay.
You can import a basic mesh and then refine it by drawing (or painting) more detail or shape into it. Or you can can start from scratch in 3D coat, using it's primitives and 'curves' tools to make a basic shape to sculpt on.
Once you finished that part you can retopologize the model, in other words, make it a polygone model other programs can understand. You can then texture it in 3d coat, painting the texture detail on the model exactly where you want it. One of the new features lets you make some areas of the texture more detailed that others, it doesn't sound like much at first but the system was developed by disney for use with renderman so it probably quite powerful.
once exported you can render the model in any program you want. All the fine detail you put into the sculpting can be exported as a normal map.
It does have a realtime renderer but really it's a modelling and texturing program.

Re: 3D Coat Update
http://www.kurvstudios.com" have some excellent tutorials on sale for 3d coat, mostly covering the sculpting and retopologizing features. They cost between $20-$45v3rd3 wrote:I bought 3d coat for the 3d painting, uv mapping and sculpting features.

Re: 3D Coat Update
The part where 3d coat shines is painting with images......
Its very simple .You align an imported picture with the underlaying model (mesh) and just rub
(paint) the picture on top onto the model underneath
Thats it . Where you cant get the right angle you use a picture from the side.
You can also flip the pictures so that you can rub the picture onto both mirror sides.
I made both these examples that way. One is a portrait and the other is a poser model with a horse picture that i had..

No Problem, the third one (the ruined pillar) is a good one to start with. It's really simple but gives a great result.v3rd3 wrote:Thanks for the links Lothissen....
