Thanks :)
its quite hard to light a scene with shiney stuff flying about, I had to light the back of them otherwise there was no real outline, the blades couldn't be the same metal as the sphere as they blended in, but it kept be busy for a few hours lol

here's just the sphere with the weapons retracted (kinda hides the mistake with the screw thread  )

I like the victim in the reflection.

There's more to even a simple scene of the quality of yours than expected. The lighting, the materials ...

The credit has got to go to Carrara, the fine tuning on lights you can do is unbelievable
I haven't finished with this yet, I plan to fix the screw weapon and alter the blades slightly, and a better backdrop, and maybe mess with motion blur

Fun subject.

The Phantasm sphere really is iconic. The movie was pretty cheesy, but it has staying power. I watched it the other night, with the commentary track. Other movies of the time, like "Banjo the Woodpile Cat" and "The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again", have happily faded from memory. (But if someone digitally inserted the Phantasm ball into those movies, I'd totally watch them.)

There are nice replicas, on http://www.ioffer.com/i/Metal-PHANTASM- ... v-90928026, and http://www.yourprops.com/view_items.php ... hantasm+II. Maybe you already saw these?

I used the first link for reference :D
its a fun object and you can do quite a lot with it, it doesn't render very nice in TS though.
yeah its a really odd film, I can't say its one I'd rush out to watch again, I agree it would improve a lot of films if it was flying about in them lol

As far as films go it was poor, but then again its like all films it depends which decade you watch them and what you compare the film to, no doubt in its day it broke new ground, it def wasn't run of the mill
