Finis - U3DAC - Jan. 2016 Star Wars

Post by Finis »

A WIP for my January 2016 challenge entry.

At first I thought of a Lightmace. This would be on a stick like the ball on a mace. Maybe one on both ends of a shaft. Then I thought it would fly like the training laser ball and be controlled mentally through tech or by using the force.

I think the sabers should be longer. Its size and saber length will depend on what it is. The guard or shield dodecahedron is to protect the the saber generators from attack. I think the shield would not be effective vs. other lightsaber weapons or blasters but it adds style and detail.

I like the purple sabers but the red works better for the bloom filter. Since the high bloom level gives a dreamy effect to the whole picture I'll probably add glows post process.

What are your suggestions or ideas?
- What is it and how is it used?
- How big is it and how long should the sabers be?
- Where should there be greebles like pictures tmp and tmp2 or none like tmp3?
- Should it have the guard or shield part?
- Any other ideas or suggestions?

Han shot first!

Hmm, does look like ... nevermind :bananadevil:

Modeling in Hexagon. Render in Iray via Daz. These are straight from Iray. The finished ones will get post processing for clarity.

Cleaned up some bad geometry and attempted to connect the inner ball to the guard or shield. Connections that looked good were too difficult so the guard will float around the inner ball.

Here, a Jedi controls it by using the Force. No Daz figures in the entry image of course. I might make a Star Wars style landscape in Bryce for the scene.

Here are some funny lightsabers link.

Thanks!

This one turned out great! It just happened when I threw my saber ball, a Bryce terrain, and a Daz character into a scene. Now I want to make a creature to be the Jedi.

Let's have some competition! You all do entries. C'mon, everyone likes Star Wars!

Here is the Crusher or Scorb Beast. He stomps with his large heavy feet and uses his three big teeth to crush opponents. I think it should be massive and simple in its basic shapes with some bumps. Maybe smaller skin details with bump or displacement maps.

Do yo have suggestions for his head or upper part? Should his feet have features like elephant toenails or armor sections?

I might try to rig it in Daz.

Now the Scorb Beast has bumps on his head. Should it have eyes or what? What senses does it have? Any ideas for the creature? In these pictures the texture is simple so the teeth are the same as the rest.

Still working on UV and texture. What do think of his eye? Should he have eyes or what? I'm going to give him holes or nostrils for breathing. Where should they be?

Hexagon modeling. Bryce terrain. Scene and Iray render in Daz.

Here's how to paint textures and save them in Hexagon https://vimeo.com/5541435. They key part to saving them is at 3:25 in the video. You have to pick one of the texture size x size selections for the material. Then export as obj and there will be a texture image.

He has three eyes now. "Eye-pod"

I spent a long time learning to paint textures in Hexagon. I learned that Hexagon is not a good tool for that. Here is one with the saber ball, creature, and Jedi. I decided not to rig the creature in Daz since I'd rather learn to do that in Blender, I want to make a humanoid creature to be the Jedi, and I should put the time on more practical things. A humanoid creature can be auto rigged in Daz. I think I'll change the textures to a simpler more cartoon style like the early scene. I like that better.

Thanks Draise. I hope more people enter the challenge. I wasted a lot of time giving him a minimal rig in Daz. That will be my last attempt to rig in Daz. Posing will make his stance less symmetrical but I didn't need it for the image. I also didn't learn anything about Blender. Probably, even though Blender is hard to learn, rigging is better there. Daz is not easy or well documented. The rigging messed up the UV's. I'll try to correct that. I had a 3 second movie of him opening and closing his mouth while moving his head and leg but it is too big to post. I don't have a Vimeo account yet. I won't log in to Youtube again except to remove my stuff because google owns it now. If I can't log in now with only my anonymous pre-google login then I won't.

Steinie authorized using a Daz base mesh as a start for sculpting a humanoid creature. I think that can be mostly autorigged. If so I'll make a Jedi creature. Otherwise it is this creature and the saber ball since the jedi is currently a Daz character.

Eh? Google owns your content?! You can put all your videos on youtube as CC, creative commons. They legally wouldn't be allowed to own whatever you upload. I read the terms of Vimeo, they aren't that great either..

I started rigging in Blender. It's pretty straight forward. Was the easier thing to learn.

Expressions and shapes, now that is a little tricker.

Working on your job? At least one of us is acting like a responsible person. I hope your customer is pleased and you make money.

Terms? That's just the tip of the iceberg. Google's evil is boundless. The last time I logged in at youtube it was almost impossible without giving them a sample of my poop and an imprint of my teeth. I was very disappointed to see that Vimeo has google ads. Now Vimeo is turning into youtube with pirated films and such being posted. At least I haven't seen videos of people playing video games there.

Messing with Daz rigging took some of the fun out of this. I'm not enthused now. If the UV problem with the rigged creature is easy to fix great. Otherwise using the unposed one and make a Jedi creature.

Edit: I have learned to to send a base figure to Hexagon, sculpt it, and return it to Daz as a morph. Now to sculpt a creature to be a Jedi.

Edit: I'm going on a different path for this creature so suggestions for this specific one not needed now. General humanoid Jedi creature ideas appreciated.

Here's my humanoid creature so far. He should replace the human Jedi in the current picture. I'm stuck. Don't know where to go from here. Suggestions?

I'm going for the practical effects, things glued to an actor, type of creature. You know, human-with-a-funny-head we see often in Star Wars and other sci fi. So I've extended stuff from the human form but not into it. Ha! Using CG to make a practical style effect!

Less human jaw is needed. Head frill is too big or not the right thing? Since I'll make clothes and boots for him if there is time I might not do much to the body. Maybe armor plates like the Thing from Fantastic 4? That could look good and would modify most of the base. Considering extending his side muscles (latisimus dorsi?) to frills. The arms and legs need something. I'll leave the feet alone, maybe resize, so boots will work better. He will get a non-human color and bump or displacement map skin. I'd do hair or fur if using Blender.

He needs a name. Ideas?

Steinie authorized using a Daz base mesh to do a creature but I want to be clear about what I made from scratch and didn't.
- Light Saber Ball from scratch
- Scorb creature from scratch
- Jedi creature starting from Daz base mesh
- Terrain made in Bryce

Messing around. I put a bunch of my old stuff in there until I had trouble rendering. Rendered in 16.5 minutes with just the GT 640. I have a GT 610 also which runs the screen so I can dedicate the 640 to rendering while the cpu and 610 let me do other things. The card had no trouble. This scene took 1.1GB of its 2GB and its temp stayed low. The limit came from the computer memory. During the first 3 or 4 minutes the cpu and disk usage would peg at 100% and the memory usage would climb to almost all of the 8GB. Odd things or crashes would happen sometimes until the cpu, disk, and memory use dropped.

The new Jedi humanoid creature. He will mostly be covered with clothes so I didn't do much on the body. Still intended to represent practical effects of gluing things to actors for creatures. Not much time before the challenge but suggestions welcome.

That's it. Probably. I see the challenge wants a creature that will be in a bar scene. The Jedi could go into a bar.

Texture Paint: Hexagon (Quirky, I don't recommend Hex for this)
Scorb (Crusher): Modeled from scratch in Hexagon and rigged in Daz (I won't rig anything else until I can do it Blender)
Jedi: Morph modeled from Daz base figure in Hexagon and applied in Daz
Jedi's Clothes: Modeled in Hexagon and applied in Daz
Terrain: Bryce
Saber Ball: Modeled from scratch in Hexagon
Scene assembled in Daz and rendered with Iray

Mr. Jedi needs a name. Suggestions?

Here's my twopenny worth:
I dont feel that the image is focused enough. Its like a still from a sequence/movie that would make sense in the context of what has come before but as a stand alone image has too much/not enough information.
The subject is very clear, a fight between the guy in the red tunic and some kind of sabre bot. The female character and the rock monster are static distractions. Perhaps show them in the distance, running to assist, for instance, then they would have a more dynamic part to play in the image.
The heroine should be showing more emotion, it's a life or death struggle after all.
The hero looks interesting but i am distracted by the detail in the mountains behind his head. Maybe blur them a bit to separate the hero from the background or use that detail elsewhere in the image.
In general the image is very flat, some depth of field would help to separate the component parts and enable you to focus viewers attention on the important parts of the picture.
The sabre bot seems not integrated with the picture plane, perhaps it could cast a shadow? Part of bot's cast shadow could replace that little bit of dune in the right foreground, which appear like large dunes rather than close sand.

I would have preferred a more monochrome effect on the entire image. Women less pink, and sky inspired by Mars. No little clouds or some horizontal streaks. Thus, green lasers would be more attractive.

Thanks! Good observations and suggestions. It will be some time before I can work on CG stuff again but early tests looked good.

It needs a story. I'm thinking to change it so the saber ball has red sabers indicating it is a Sith or dark side weapon. I doubt Jedi would use such a weapon of mass destruction. The male could hold a blue or green light saber, showing he is Jedi, in one hand while using the Force to defend vs. the ball. The female could do the same, or be running from the background to help while dodging a herd of the big creatures, or be the enemy.

Draise's character animations are inspiring me to learn about it in Blender. No time for a while but I think I'll try the 3 leg creature. Suggestions for what the creature could do? Separate or in context of this Star Wars picture. Physically he can walk, look, bite, and I think the top part of his head could expand/contract like breathing.

I had envisioned the creature as a docile native animal and he, or groups of them, wander around only mildly concerned with the Jedi battle. With the symmetrical "three" design the only way I saw to give it a mouth was to put it underneath. On top, what would it bite with those teeth? I imagined they might feed on the ground spikes. Problem: That looks fine in the still picture. Now imagine an animation of it feeding on a spike or biting a Jedi or prey ... something sticking into the orifice between its legs ... any suggestions for what to do about its mouth?
