Cool, like the looks of this competition, may enter in here, as just recently I saw photos of the worlds largest cave in Vietnam, including forest and clouds underground!

Hmmm, interesting topic even I think I can handle.

Anyone have a torch?

I wanted to get started.

Is that Deer Cave near Sarawak Malaysia (waterfall too!) or one in Vietnam? I read a thing about Deer Cave where a claustrophobic guy toured it and didn't feel cramped.

Man cave. Hmm. Cave man man-cave. Oh been done = Flintstones. Flintstones! It doesn't have to be realistic.

Looks good James. Grotto! Another kind of cave.

Ice caves. I might try that for fun. Lots of rendering challenges like translucency.

Not Deer Cave. They keep finding bigger ones!

I experimented with methods to make stalactites.

Tried metaballs and physics in TS 7.6. Enough adhesion sticks them to each other but all of them will keep oozing down the column (metaball cylinder in the middle). To make a stalactite some would have to stop moving while others moved over them. That would build up the shape. So that didn't work.

I used Cool Powers 2 Particulator plugin to spread copies of a 20 poly geosphere over a rough shape made from a cone. That made a shape suitable for a cartoon or a base for detailing. SDS just made the spheres smooth rather than blending them. Mesh Collapse didn't change that.

I've been to Carlsbad Caverns. Who else has visited a cave or cavern?

Went to Carlsbad Cavern as child, watched the bats exiting the cave and what not. Funny how kids remember certain things. There was a cafeteria at the bottom and I remarked to my mother that it tasted like 'cave' (moldy and damp). She laughed and told me to eat it anyway.

There's a nice cave in San Marcos Texas I have visited and one large man-made salt cave in Kansas (near Hutchinson) that is 650 deep. In the Hutchinson salt mine is where some of the old films and even secrets of the government are stored because of the low humidity and the fact they are stored so far underground (nuclear bomb proof).

Been to smaller caves here and there and one in Germany that was converted by the Germans to store ammunition. That cave later became a "secret" communications facility.

Re: making a cave

Never thought of using particles to make a cave, but suppose one could do that. I imagine fractal programs (there are many) could be used to grow your stalagmites and 'tites'.

I prefer the sculpting option in 3Dcoat, but I suppose any application could do something similar.

In Missouri I went to Onondaga Cave and then Meramec Caverns where Jesse James used as a hideout. The two caves are about 50 miles apart but they are believed to be connected.

I also visited Marvel Cave many times in Silver Dollar City. ( back then the main attraction WAS the cave and Silver Dollar City was ONE street) (today Silver Dollar City is HUGE and the cave is hardly mentioned)

Also Mark Twain Cave which was written about in 5 books authored by Mark Twain

Let's see some entries. Don't make James win by default. Main thread vi ... =66&t=3915

There are guided only tours in Carlsbad to some areas with delicate things and some where you have to crawl through openings and such to get there. I want to go on one of those. There are many caverns in that area but most aren't prepared for tourists, have no tours, or are off limits. I want to see Lechuguilla Cave but only researchers and survey teams are allowed.

That's the most realistic cave render ever Spacekdet! It reminds me of a psychology course I took. The book had funny cartoons and one was a black dot titled, "Rats being reared in darkness".

If you already voted please revote. I included Spacekdet's black rectangle in the poll as a joke but removed it when it received a vote. Unfortunately that reset all the votes to zero. Sorry.

Uhh.. Could be because Finis did not enter the contest or
leave any comments in comments thread..

That being said.. I would have no problem with his
entry being added and the vote tally being reset...

Glad you liked Ice Cave. I didn't enter because it is traditional for the exalted dictator of a challenge not to enter and I did the cave more to learn and experiment with KT. That first picture did turn out well though. I'll make the finished one look more like that.

Lots of great entries. It was hard for me to pick one to vote for. That's getting more common in the challenges. Everyone must be getting better at this.

Sorry about the vote snafu.

I'm feeling a little verklempt that my entry actually made it into the running, but I have to admit that it was a totally Photoshopped forgery! It wasn't a real render, but actually an extreme close up of a single black vertice.

I liked Deep Below Goblin Town which was eliminated in the first poll. It had a look, an atmosphere, to it.

Pugman 1 wins!

You wrote above that you don't want to win. If you want the win then you are in charge of the next challenge. If you want to pass the win to the 2nd place person then let's break the tie between JamesMC and Ranger0101 by passing it to who ever you voted for.

I'm thinking insects, rodents and reptiles (sorry amphibians - no joy).

Perhaps Steinie can unleash his artistic fury on that?
