Which trueSpace 7.61 edition do you recommend to new users?

Post by First Light »

Greetings,

As I was working on the trueSpace FAQs I was thinking about when to recommend the full version of trueSpace 7.61 (with both the Model and Workspace Sides) verses the "standard" edition (with just the Workspace Side).

If someone new were to approach you and ask you which edition of trueSpace 7.61 they should download and use, what would you tell them? What questions would you ask them to help you shape your answer?

I think it would depend on what they are looking to do and learn.

If they are looking for basic modeling with Primitives, Workspace has a freidnly design with limited tools to allow someone to get their foot in the door without being overwelmed by 400+ tools.

yeah, but with workspace you need to know some pretty nifty tricks to get some basic modeling done that is easy in work space... at least that is what I think, and then there is the flow editor side... but perhaps that is just because i'm so used to the model side, maybe for a complete stranger, workspace is easy to get used to...

I just started TS A few months back so I am not to familiar with the model side yet. I started on Workspace and just with the Viperfish tutorial you can go from there and have a good basis of what you are looking to do.

When I look at model side I am completely overwhelmed and will really have to put a lot more time into it to be able to accomplish anything over there. FNubs, geo, primitive, extrude, lathe. etc...

But, now that I have a basic understanding of the workspace side I am undestanding more of the tools on the model side.

Now this is just my o[pinion from my experience, But for me the workspace side was simple to get into.

Thanks Karthogen and theuns!!!

It seems to me that our trueSpace FAQs needs to offer some advice about this because this is the first question that a new person must answer when they are confronted with the download page at Caligari: "Which edition of trueSpace to use?"

So I appreciate your input and advice very, very much. Keep it coming...

I have not had teh time to really delve into the model side tutorials but I will be soon. I am slowign coming over.

For the SMC and the MMC all my models were done on workspace, saved, textured on the model side and rendered on Modelside.

I am soon going to try a complete model on the model side.

I keep trying to accomplish something in either. But for me, one of the draw backs of Workspace is the rendering.

Thanks DabblingDan!

You gave me an idea how to approach this subject differently and I think it will help our discussion. Let's list the things that can only be done (or be done better) with one Side verses the other. But to relate this to a new user, let's not just list features but let's focus on what you can't do (or do less well) if a feature is absent (or inferior).

For example, you mentioned that one drawback to the Workspace Side is its rendering. First, let's be more specific: Are you talking about (A) the difference between the real-time rendering of the Model Side verses the Workspace Side or are you (B) refering to the fact that an off-line renderer is not provided for the Workspace Side (therefore you have to use a third-party solution)?

If (A) is what you are refering to, then you'll have to provide more information so we understand what you mean and its implications to the new user. My understanding of (A) is that the DirectX 9c/10 real-time renderer used by the Workspace Side can produce better results than the Model Side. But I might not understand what you mean.

If (B) is what you are refering to, then the disadvantage to the new user is that they won't be able to render photo-realistic images if they choose trueSpace 7.61 Standard because it only has a Workspace Side and therefore no off-line renderer---unless they are willing to seek an add-on and third-party renderer (like dribble/RenderMan, Indigo exporter/Indigo, or YafaRay4tS/YafaRay).

Here's another one: Nurbs are only available on the Model Side. How will the absence of nurbs on the Workspace Side hinder a new 3D creator? What can they not do or not do as well on the Workspace Side because they are absent?

Best regards, First Light

You really need both sides to make it happen for me. I haven't opened 7.61 yet, because I haven't felt the need to.

Has there been any talk of Workspace side reflections?

I found workplace side widgets easier to use then the model side Box. I have a hard time finding the right edge of the box to move. IT hides itself behind things a lot, and the rotation dots are imposible to find.

For rendering, the realtime workspace side renderer can put out some decent results, but is very limited by your PC and Vid card. I found more than 7 lights slows down my system and it is close, but not as clear as Lightworks. But the benefit is speed, I can render frames in the realtime workspace render that is included, in seconds instead of minutes.

Lights,
I am not sure if there is something out there to fix this. but on the workspace side the only light that will generate shadows is the Spotlight. I dropped down two or three levels in LE on the other lights and can not find a way to turn on shadows.
