Anything Challenge - Sharks

Post by Finis »

Grovel before my mesh mortals! Uh, I mean, that is better than I expected.

Oceanic whitetip shark modeled from drawings. I'll adjust details to photos. The attachment of the pectoral and pelvic fins is different in photos. The body cross section is like a rounded triangle and the nose should be flatter. Eyes. Mouth but probably not open. Gills.

Thanks Draise.

The fins are sort of correct after all. The back part of the pectoral fins is not connected to the body but it fits closer than in my model.

I made the nose more shark shaped and attempted to model gills. That crashed hexagon and produced messy polys. I'll try to model the eye sockets and mouth but I'll use a displacement map for the gills.

UV's are important since this challenge is about using the textures provided. Unwrapping this in hexagon has proven too difficult. I can't spend that much time on it. So I'll apply box and cylinder UV's separately to sections of it.

You could split that shark right down the midline and use the fins as separate texture domains for UV I would think.

Anyways, I never thought I'd see you sleeping with the fishes.

Thanks James. I discovered the power of pins in UV unwrapping (hexagon). "The Power of Pins" sounds like a good title for tutorial about UVs.

I have not done unwrapping or any sophisticated UVs and that is something I need to learn. No time for that though so I'll create several "shading domains" like you said. Cylinder for the main body and boxes or planes for fins. I want seamless textures to match at the ... seams. This might be a good model for learning this stuff in Blender.

The modeling center of by brain took over. This challenge is about creative use of the textures. Your use, James, of them is much more creative and interesting than my idea for this picture. So far, if it is me and you in the challenge (come on people, enter the challenge!) I'm voting for you.

Snowing! No outdoors work today so maybe I'll work on this some.

Pugman, I plan to learn Blender. That was to be my winter project but (be careful what you ask for) I had more work than usual so less time. I will learn it and start using it as time permits. I was going to learn Messiah for animation when they had their super sale price but there was little support for it. Blender has plenty of tutorials and support.

Here is the challenge entry. It is the same except they have eyes now. I think my use of the textures is not as creative and the other entries. I thought of giving it a caption like, "Frank's style is so last year." It is supposed to just be strange so I'll leave it the viewer's imagination.

Maybe I'll work on this more as a Blender project. It needs some details and to look more like a shark. The nose isn't flat enough, the body shape isn't quite right, and the large muscle crease is missing.
