OS are becoming more obese, more and more paranoid with their controls, their protection, complex configuration. it shows the malaise of contemporary society. Gains in computing power are only used to digest all this nonsense. All this will kill the personnal computer too difficult to handle individually and benefit of cloud computing and micro-OS embedded everywhere. The incompetence of the programmers in terms of simplicity is evident. That is why artificial intelligence can not evolve. is beyond the means of man or maybe a smart personnal tool is not the goal when trying to control a decerebrate population who applauded every "innovation" designed to make them more dependent.

Re: Is serious doctor?
exactly... I prefer small OS aswell. Ideal is to have the least services runing and add some 3rd party adds, only those I need and want. And I usually want the simpliest and greater working - with the quality of programming.
It is really obvious - look at what programmers could do with 48k of RAM in ZX Spectrum I had. Now apps need gigs of RAM and hundrets of MB of program codes to work. Its very obvious in the same app with new generations - new version eats usually more disc space after installing, even when there is not much improvement (I can see it at PaintShop Pro when I look at PSPX and X3 its a biiig difference). But sometimes even nowadays you can find a good made app., that is small and well functional, doesnt eat too much of memory, works simply and efficiently, is small - just few MB. But not many of them. :-/

Re: Is serious doctor?
i am not really against the size of a software or the need of ram to use it. Hardware can support that today. i am against the complexity of setting and compatibility between apps. Normal people hate that. A soft could be useful without the need to learn a lot and without bug. It is not the case today. Complexity hides the fact programmers can't do that. Everything is full of useless features while the bulk is not optimal.
-First: I suspect the big companies make users dependent because it is more profitable for their buziness.
-second: i think intelligent personnal OS will never see the day as it will be replaced by the cloud before being developed.
-thirdly: all the government are too paranoid to let such tools in the hands of anyone. The future is to control the population. the best way to proceed is to make OS indigestible then provide a simple alternative as the cloud but full of spyware like Internet become.

I agree
I still use XP, but probably any time soon I'll be forced to
upgrade, whata shame

Re: Is serious doctor?
the size = complexity. The more complicated, to slower, bugy and the less compatible. The smallest, least complicated apps works best and fastest. That you have powerfull hardware is a cheap excuse for programers. For example: Making app multitheaded is not speeding it up, its making the app use more power to do even simple things, where the power is not needed to perform them fast. Sure apps should be multithreading ready, but at first they should be optimised, not so complicated, so they can work efficiently with the hardware - faster.
its like car engines -
1 option: you optimize ever single component to get every Joul of energy from one burn cycle. So you get power, fuel efficiency, reliability,...
or
2. Option: you leave the engine contruction crappy and just add a turbocharger, supercharger etc. which will make the engine maybe powerful, but too complicated, more streessed, tending to fail, hungry for fuel (like apps hungry for computing power) to have that performance.
thats it. Its just the way that most of programmers work.

Re: Is serious doctor?
Electric car was invented before thermic engine. But business of oil is too important to find time to develop an alternative. and they don't want to do that until there is no oil. when alternative begin interesting the actual technologie no longer benefit from progress. in this case it can be a good thing. for pc it is a different problem because the goal is the freedom of do what you want.
mobile internet and social networks associated with the cloud breaks the barrier between private and professional life. we can have fun at the office but we are approached by work even on vacation. the disorientation and the feeling of being in constant competition will do damage. people with mobility will be increasingly stressed. But we have no choice because the personal computer reached its limits of a commercial standpoint. I think that windows on a PC will disappear in 10 years. at least in its current form. future generations who have not known the current PC will be horrified at the idea of being isolated and do not understand how we could do. Probably because they will have a vague idea of what freedom was. this is not my world. i will have plenty of thing to do without being connected to be at the forefront of technology.

Re: Is serious doctor?
I have windows 7, and my computer has 8 Gb's of Old DDR2 ram.
I think it's good for nothing but a fancy shell program, but it doesn't
bother me as long as I can use the programs, and I have enough
RAM to handle it.
I don't see the need for anything but a simple shell program, but otoh
something like Linux is way more difficult for installing new software.
So I will stick with windows because I know it, and because I want to
be focused on things other than the OS.

Re: Is serious doctor?
Yes OS is something that should be transparent to deal only with software. It's been 10 years that Linux is trying to impose itself in people but it can not do it because it's not easy for most people. Linux is interresting for servers, programmers and students who have nothing in common with the needs of the population. I think Linux will eventually find its place in the cloud like any other OS. Which will remove its quality of source code changes that made it successful. Apple seems to abandon its OS and concent to its mobile business. Microsoft alone has a long-term vision on the pc but it will lose against the tidal wave of mobile business. MS will probably be like the others. Windows 8 will be an intermediate step before the abandonment of the OS for PC. we have no choice, unless a company decides to create a simple OS for PC, for personal use without having to be connected. Sometimes history repeats itself ...

I predict that we are not going cloud !
I predict that we are not going cloud !
The majority of uses will be something like the i pad in the future and mobile internet wont hold up to
the demands...... the cloud on those devices wont be feasable(because to slow and not everywhere with enough bandwith).. not for a future we life in and after that well I dont care.....
The cloud can be something good too.Why ? because I dont have to own a cow for a few litres of milk....

the important thing is to always have the choice of the PC and the cloud. I hope that the future will give you right! However I do not see the problem of having a cow in his living room.

The next OS will consist of 3D widgets that we use to control objects in the... oh wait, that's been tried before!

You can compare cloud computing as the ''cloud monetary system''. It's useful have a credit card and a debit card, but it's a right to have those coins and paper money, that's freedom, they can just take it by force. So in an exception state hardware computers and hardware money is to assure freedom.
