Unreal Engine Free!

Post by clintonman »

Epic is releasing the Unreal Engine for free. Last year it was a subscription for $20/month with the option to quit anytime and keep it. Now it's free except you pay them 5% if you make any money with it.

It sounds like the good news of the year !
Many thanks for sharing this information :worship:

When I see what Unreal is capable of for architecure visualisation, it sounds like the most promizing solution for my walkthrough projects.

Clinton, does your modeler side's Unreal export plugin work with this version of Unreal or is it now an old format ?

I felt as I was missing a pump action shotgun on that visualization tour. :D

Wow! That looks plenty good enough for architectural walkthroughs. I saw another Unreal vid with 4K graphics.

Don't know about the pricing though. Old: $20/month or "quit and keep it" (that means subscribe for updates or quit and no updates?). New: free for non-commercial and 5% of your income on professional projects after the first $3000 per quarter except film, architectural, and some thing else. (gross or net income? $3000 from all your paid projects together or each? etc.) Sounds like you would need a lawyer and an accountant to determine if you owe them something or not.

Good for pro arch-vis folks but if I made decent money making games, or anything where I'd owe them, I'd prefer to just buy it or do the old way. Cheaper and less complicated.

That aside though it makes a great walk through vid.

I've got a few hours of Unreal engine experience now, and I like it a lot. This is somehow what Workspace was supposed to be... It is almost un-real :)

Now, let's get our scenes into Unreal engine !

Clinton's Unreal export tsx doesn't work because the t3d file format is outdated. His FBX export panel is working, in tS7.61 though.

However if you don't want to use Worspace tools, you still can load your scene from Modeler into Unreal, using the OBJ file format.
Simply select all objects in your scene, clic the Glue_As_Sibling tool to get them all glued together, and use the OBJ import/export tsx to save your scene.
Next, in Unreal Editor, go to the Content Browser panel, choose Import, pick up your .obj file, then in the Import options panel, set Import_Rotation_X to 90° and Import_Uniform_Scale to 100. This will get your trueSpace scene loaded into that library.
Note that the object axis in Unreal is located at trueSpace's world axis.

To experience a camera animation for a walkthrough, I recommend this tutorial, because it is not obvious at all at first :

The old modelspace tsx plugin is old, but the workspace script for t3d does work with Unreal 4.

In trueSpace, our material aspects are faceted, autofacet or smooth.
But when I load an object in Unreal every object seems automatically smoothed.

I don't see any options for this in your export tool Clinton. Is there something I am missing in Unreal import options ? Or should I edit this somewhere in Unreal's material editor ?

Hi Emmanuel,
Here is how you can get faceted material in Unreal :
In Unreal, having your object selected, find the STATIC MESH panel, in the "stack view" (sorry, I mean the panel at your right).
Double clic the picture of your object to enter the object properties/editor window (I don't know the name of that window yet).
In the "stack view" (well, that panel's name is DETAILS), find the Build Settings options and check the RECOMPUTE NORMALS checkbox. This will get your faceted faces back.

I think what you saw is an answer by some unknown person (probably a unity guru).

Did you change to the t3d aspect of the panel?

Yes, I tried your import/export tool but I don't figure how to make good use of it yet. I can export a tS scene in .t3d format but when I load the objects in Unreal Engine (via File>Actors>Import...), I get something flickering and called Brush, with one material per face.
I am very new to Unreal and there is still a lot of mysteries here :)

I will try to favour a direct workflow from Modeler to Unreal though, without the need to go through the Bridge.
Today, the most annoying thing is to set the rotation and scale, plus the recompute normal trick, every each time I load a tS object into Unreal via the OBJ format... I wish the OBJ export tsx had an options panel to store some common used settings. This would save time and make transfer more fluent.

I must say. I love it. The realtime GI, Bokeh DOF, AO, the frame bufffers all up... so far it's AWESOME. Viewport navigation is odd, estilo game. But it's.. so far great. Worth the 4 gig download. I will play more with it.. it's like the WS viewport.. on cocaine, LSD and speed. Though the realtime light sometimes has to be calculated - in one way the direct control in WS is.. still nice... I can see that aspect of Unreal becoming annoying in a while.. have to study up on it a lot more.

COOL! Great news!.. Thanks for share!

For arch viz, realtime is a great world to explore, unreal, seems to be optimized for big worlds, so THIS is something i will try for sure..

Prodigy is here!

How well does UE work with blender? Is there a plug-in for Blender integration or some good workflow between them?

Unreal!!!! it is a good engine but I have spent to many hours under the hood of unity to even bother with it. My nephew had attempted over the last few years to sell me on any game engine other than Unity. He would send me emails with links to renders done in Cryengine and later Unreal. I would honestly take a deep look into them but each time I ended up back in unity. I wont try to sell you on Unity because its really up to the individual and what you feel at home with. Who knows what will be abandoned next :).

If you find yourself drawn to it. It is easy for you to use. You get the results you want. Then go for that package.

Best wishes...................................... :bananahi:
