I thought I would make this a separate thread because it deals with something different even though it is part of my shadow's scene with a transparency.
I want to use a spotlight to 'brighten' an object, but I don't want it to effect the other objects in the scene. Is there a way of doing this?

I don't think you can have a light like that in TS. You could try setting the luminosity greater than zero on the reflectance of the material for the bright object.

You could do this by compositing two (or more) renders together.
That is, render just the object, lit to your liking, on a transparent background.
(If you render to TGA and choose 32 bit in the render to file dialog this will be automagic)
Then render the rest of the scene and combine them in your image editor of choice.
This might give you some more ideas.
