Glass Material

Post by MikomDude »

How do you create a transparent material that looks like darkened glass? Has anyone got any good settings?

on model side the Caligari metal enhanced shader can do that. the settings have tranparency and refraction. it can create cool effects.

You didnt say what render engine !
You are now talking to a Messiah animate user group !

No honestly its pretty easy.. if you render in any render engine you dont use white with the glass shader
but any shade of grey down to black.......
here is a sphere with the material... you can tweak the settings.. it depends if you want it more shiny or use it as windows....

the problem of realism with dark glass is the color is apply on the surface of an object (tinted glass) not as if the solid is entirely colored. a dark glass need to be darker trought the thick part and lighter trought the thin parts as a shader for skin (SSS or other). It depend of the capacity of the render engine you use. the sphere is an object which can dispense with this feature.
the problem is the same with the shadows: the amount of light that passes trought the thick part of the object is less than the amount of light that passes trought the thin part.

Yeah sorry, I'm just using the standard modelside render engine, Lightworks.

What I'm trying to render is a four-sided thick glass bottle. Getting a solid sphere or cube to look right wasn't much of a problem, however this bottle is hollow inside and when I rendered it the space between the inside and outside became very visible.
After posting this thread, I managed to fix that problem and I now have quite a realistic glass bottle, the problem is, it appears a bit like a full bright model while the rest of the scene is perfectly shaded.

I'll now try all of your advice, thanks RAYMAN and Marcel! :)

Out of curiosity how did you fix this? I did a glass bottle using 6.6 and used the invert normal tool on the interior glass and whether I am losing my eyesight or my mind I cannot find the inversion tool in 7.6 model side to duplicate that method.

Please tell me how you did it.....

I found a standard glass material which I edited a bit, after that the render looked quite natural unfortunately the transparency wasn't that visible anymore and now it looks like a full bright model while the rest of the scene is shaded.

@V3rd3: the flips normal tool is on a branch of icon (maybe not visible for you). click the mirror tool until you developped the branch, then the "composite into objects" developped a new branch. you will see the tool.

It is not necessary to speak about sophisticated renderers that use algorithm for a correct physically light. They are amazing but everyboby have not the opportunity to have one. For those who simply use Lightworks and the model side, it is possible to use a dielectric shader on the outside of an object instead of glass to simulate the behavior of a colored glass in the mass. The hollow with glass shader and normal flipped illuminate the object through the dielectric. The others parts remains dark. And other trick is to make the bottom of the object with a mirror shader in order to change the refflect. Just for an artistic point of view. It is not the reality. But that is also the interest of the 3d.
Here is a simple test made with the "old" Ligthwork on the model side:

That's kind of what I'm looking for yes, mine is even darker and greenish. Not to mention that it's a very thick glass bottle. :)
