MMC September/October 2010 - The end times - theun

Post by theuns »

Got this idea suddenly this evening and started sketching... basically a ruined city scape with skyscrapers being overrun by vegetation... got the huge tree on the roof and flowers growing on the grass beneath it with tree roots twisting everywhere (food for people) ... vines linking buildings together (that people can use as bridges)... water flooding the building on the right to form dams and waterfalls (fresh water for people to use)...

here is the result... now I just need to start modeling it ;)

Looks like a great idea, can't wait to see in 3D.

Pretty nice drawings btw!

thanks leon... going to try and make some time to do this in 3d... did something with plant stems and roots last year for a SMC and my MMC mushroom house, so I have a technique already to do it in, just a matter of time...

ok, here it is... still need a lot of work though but the main idea is there...

wanted to build some huge hulking robot skeletons in the background but didn't get around to it so I made my giant roaming insect versions scoring the city ruins instead... still wanted to carve out some dark window frames but after cutting out the collapsed bits, trueSpace didn't want to allow me to cut out smaller squares for broken windows :( will try and do that later on ....

will post some WIP shots later when I get them uploaded...

Looks cool man. You could try some alpha maps for the broken glass.

good idea... i wanted to have open dark holes with roots growing out of them like in my drawing but adding some alpha map windows will make it look more like buildings, now it just looks like block of metal or stone with bits missing :(

You could do both. Just have your root come through were the transparent part of the alpha map area will be.

I'm curious, there doesn't seem to be any apparent light sources. Also the light that is there doesn't give the scene an apocalyptic look.
You know, if you rendered this in workspace, "Bloom" can make it look a lot cooler and with some dark lights around. If you render in the model side, adding depth might also give the same effect.

Just a suggestion ;)

I must admit, lighting and texturing isnt my strong points so I need all the help I can get... Bloom sounds interesting but I havent transitioned into workspace side yet, do you mean the 'depth of field' tool in modelside?

Yes, I meant the depth of field tool, it can give your scene an extra touch that makes it look more real. I think it works well on large scenes, really improves the realism.
