Yep, one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen on television was a part of elephant "training" for a young elephant. To break it's spirit to begin training, they chained it to a tree and then about three men started hitting the poor elephant with baseball bats. The poor elephant cried and called desperately for mommy - I started to cry to.

I don't want animals abused either ... or people. If you know that these specific elephants were abused then I'll take your word for that, but don't assume that all trained animals are abused. Also don't make the logical error of "some equals all" -- one, some, or many, known examples of X doesn't mean that X always occurs. It certainly is possible to teach an animal to do things without abuse.
