Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Well whata shame my folder is, my last message is back July!
Anyway I'm back guys, I changed computer and now I don't have the rendering and directx problem anymore, and nothing is better to get warmed up in 3D than a MMC ^^
I did this in the last two days, sorry for don't post the progress, I like when I post every single progress because then is cool to see the timeline ^^
It's a Caravel with 3 Sails (big one, they usually have just 2), no weapons (for exploration) and is still untextured and totally incomplete.

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Well guys, thanks a lot! I'm glad to be back too!
I received a friend this two days that have past so I didn't touch Computer, so now today in this night I got some time to the Helm pretty realistic because I plan maybe to do maybe later a First Person Vision like if I was the Captain.

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Thanks Finis.
------
Just want to state something I forgot to in the last post...
Now are just about the details on the Caravel (ropes, barrels and objects on the ship's surface) so that's all be doing in the following day and when finish the modelling I'll post the result and then start texturing, after get the basic texture done, I'll start the scene development.

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Basic Texture done:
The problem is, I can't find the spanish cross of the sails like this one: http://www.bestscalemodels.com/santamaria.jpg"
If anyone knows the name of that kind of cross so that I can search for that.
Also the texturing looks odd I don't know why, maybe you guys can point it out.

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Nice one! The modeling looks very good. I don't know why you made the ropes the way you did though, now it looks more like a scaled model, try straighting them out and making them a bit thinner.
I'm not very good with textures so all I can say about them is that they look good

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Thanks to Ranger and Finis I could apply the cross on the sail but now the sail I applied lost some transparency I need to look after that, I think I know what is the problem...
Rendered without Shadow Transparency but the sails are transparent.
I think the textures are much better now!
-----------------
Mikom: Yea as we talked on MSN I'll fix that, I just did the ropes too thick and then after that I couldn't make it thinner (I'll asking for that on tech forum, and marcel seems to solved that, just needs to explain it better), so that's the next thing to do...
-----------------
Comment please

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Ah Marcel thanks but now I've done it by myself =(
Ok Ship is ready, maybe I still do some changes on strings and things that are connected to the strings but just that... Now I'll start scene composition.

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Ok time is going I need to finish until 26, so I got 3 days left!
I did the caravel and the sea, the rock it will be wrecked, so now I just need to wreck it on the rock, I want to be a super realistic crash, with the strings cut and a lot of broken wood!
Here is where it will happen...
PS: I'll do a vertex of the scene with the ship sailing to the New World!
Also please help me, the shadow cast on the water seems like one cast on the ground (too dark) how can I make shadow that are cast on the water smoother?

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
I like the idea, and love the ship.
However (here am I, being a jerk again for pointing out the little things) it seems rather unlikely that a ship in a calm sea would just keep going straight for a huge rock that obviously would mean certain doom.
Maybe you should add a little less... what's the word.. "randomness" to the scene.

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
You are right in some way. I was planning something to make this event more ''possible'' but is hard to think about it, like I could put more rocks around it to show like the Caravel entered a ''rocky zone'' and couldn't get away from that one, or I could do huge waves (what wouldn't be realistic because I don't know how) but well someone could give an idea of how make it possible, the final result is the ship wrecked at that rock... I could put the title ''Who Slept at the Helm?''.MikomDude wrote:I like the idea, and love the ship. However (here am I, being a jerk again for pointing out the little things) it seems rather unlikely that a ship in a calm sea would just keep going straight for a huge rock that obviously would mean certain doom.

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
A ship is usually near land when it hits an unknown reef or rock. It could be that the tide is low.
I would put an island in the background or have the scene in a cove.

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Yeah Steinie that's what usually happens, but then the ship sinks or fall to one of the sides... I'll solve the ''why'' problem later, even because it didn't take too much time.
------------
The problem now is to wreck this ship within 2 days!!! And the only person that can solve this problem is me >.>
Ok I started with the front pole, it will be broken like this:
The black thing on the upper sail will be corrected just now, I just couldn't fix and then wait more 30 min to render (4x, High)...
Now I'll focus on the damages to the hull and structure, then will do the other poles (they will be just damaged).

Thanks Mikom
Here is the development, just remaining now: Put the Strings, Put debris on water, Put objects on water, Broke some more stuff, Enhance lightning and Fix Render problems (Wrong Shadows, Black stuff, Some Textures).

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Yeah, it looks really like a wreck now. Still, it's to sunny to give the impression that something bad is going on in the scene and the location is still seems to be to "random", but I'm sure you're still working on that.
Otherwise I'm glad to see that you managed to get the render working right, I didn't...

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
Looks really wrecked now. Needs more atmosphere or "feel" to give it an emotion. Darker with storm clouds like the storm that ran them into the rock, or darkness of night that hid it, has passed but is still around. Maybe add another rock or two. I like the sail in the water. You could experiment with ground fog.

Re: Caravel Project (MMC Jan 2011)
It looks very nice! Hitting a rock right in the middle of the ocean still seems a bit unlikely but I really like the waves and the background and naturally the model it self. You can count on my vote

Here is another angle:
Also I recommend to listen to this song while you look at the scenes.

Hey folks, can anyone imagine, how surprised the captain must have been, to smash-up a big thing in the middle of a to some extent quiet ocean, under clear sky, not even being in reach of any landscape and thus no lookout to sit on the watch duty ...? This must have been poseidon's trident ...? Damn whisk...

Hey I'm now trying to make this ship sail, I need to improve the sea, those waves are too calm and is lacking foam!
