MMC Jan 2010 " Futuristic Building Block "
Ok here comes my Wip..... Steinie gave me the ok that i can run this on my prefered Software ... I will be using Sketchup and Moi 3d mainly.
so here is the start.
I laid out the basement by overlapping squares that i draw and booleaned them together in Sketchup. I then erased the internal lines and pulled
the complex up in the 3d direction.... added some split lines and pulled parts of it up even more. remember Sketchup works with simple push pull action.
Then turned the building around and added the streets junctions underneath.
Thats the rough building block......

Re: MMC Jan 2010 " Futuristic Building Block "
If I would make the windows all geometry we would get a few thousand windows which nobody could open the model of so we
are doing some baking here. First step is to model the window second step is to make a component out of this window by dragging over your window with
the left mouse button and then rightclick the mouse and choose make component. we can now save that component. Its got sticky properties
so that yo can drag it from the library onto any flat surface. note that the textures that you assign also get stored.
After that i drag it onto a flat big surface and scale it to the proportions that i need. I then array that 20 times into both directions on the 3rd layer.
I do the samed thing with all the window models that I make.
i export that into my render program and render my windowfronts.

When your looking at applications there´s not a better there is the question what is faster for the job.pugman 1 wrote:looking good so far,

If youve got hundreds of the same objects and they are on a wall and all you have to do is make the object once and store it in your library
with textures applied and snapping properties its realy simple to drag it from a library right onto your surface.
apart from that the fact that you can alter your geometries whie you are creating a building is a large bonus if you work with architecture
a reason why sketchup is so common among architects.........
BIG PLUS SKETCHUP NORMAL VERSION IS ALSO FREE !
To see how to use it with truespace look into9 the tutorial section of this forum..

Re: MMC Jan 2010 " Futuristic Building Block "
Interesting. That’s going to be a killer building Peter. In Sketchup making a component is the same as instancing? Or will it add a boat load of geometry to process with many copy’s on a flat surface? I have only used Sketchup to build a chair following one of their tutorials and then a bed using my own design. But during this short time the big thing I liked about Sketchup was the snap measurement tools. Makes it easy to build to scale. Very convenient.
Good luck on the competition.

Sketchup is a great application for modeling buildings but lousy at making organics.
trueSpace/workSpace does have snapping tools just not as refined.
Your off to a great start Rayman!

As for the great start i will see..... its at least always biting off more then i can chew ....

@ Dan yes a component is like an instance ... it also behaves like it ..

Yeah is a quick render in vue .
I did upgrade to vue 8 because it imports animated characters from truespace with Collada including full animation..

nice to see you on a MMC!
It is interesting to show what we can do with other soft. In a few years, it will not matter of the manner and only the result will be important. That is the goal.

Ok I´m continueing with some cars .... i want to do something for the bottom.
i need to keep it low poly as the whole project eats up polys rapidly......
theres going to be around 20 of them that i will copy a few times and texture tem in 3d coat..
Here you see the wires of them..All pretty fast modeling 10 minutes a piece..

The problem is that i cant make use of instancing if i share my model with other people the file would be to big.Finis wrote:Why does the poly count matter? Aren't you going to render in some program that handles ba-zillions of polygons?
i always said that instancing only makes use of the same objects in a scene an can handle those pretty many times....
Once you use a scene as one piece your limited to the poly count that both your operating system and your software can handle and thats just over a million polys
here is an update with a monorail construction.....(wireframe)

Looking good Rayman
I have been UV mapping this afternoon. I need to go get 3D coat so I can paint textures. My problem is that if its painted like that then you cant get a UV map out of it? Its fine for use in VUE. I think I read somewhere that C4D has very good tools for UV mapping and painting on textures as well. But then I cant afford that anytime soon if ever.

Thank you Dan !
Its called Bodypaint and is an industrystandard for painting yes its good but 3d coat should do the job well ..
Everything is better then UV mapping most of the time....

Re: MMC Jan 2010 " Futuristic Building Block "
Now that i have modeled all the 20 cars....
I am trying to keep the polycount low so i am faking some of the structures like the highway crash barriers.....
I basically made them this way .. I made and S in Moi3d and extruded that then I shelled it... i only made 1 element.
i the rendered that element in Vue with the correct material . I also made an alpha in black and white.
I imported these renders into photoshops layers one on top of the other. I then cut out that element and exported the texture and the alpha.
In Sketchup I simply made the street and extruded the boarders. I textured it so that i also had transparent parts and the texture repeats itself.... I can make
an endless highway that way with only a small texture and a few polygons. I also use bump to simulate the depth of the barriers.

That's not a simple highway it's the AUTOBAHN!
The whole thing is looking great I liked in the last pic how you mixed image and 3D making the ground using a photo (with displacement map?) or that is 3D too?
Keep the good work!

Steinie probably larger scale the i can pull off but i just finished building and texturing 17 buildings as background fillers(all low res about 400 polys each) because a normal backdrop wouldnt be high enough that you could see it well......Steinie wrote:You certainly work large scale Peter!![]()
I can't wait to see all this come together.
made traficsigns and wastepaperbaskets and lamps and lampposts and a few other props..... i´m much to slow for my project but i am happy again to be
doing 3d at all because i had not much energy left at the end of the year.....
now on to the monorailstation.....
Here are 5 of the 17 Buildings

Now comes the hard part.. i need to get all tzhe detail that i made into the scene like the monorail a fountain all the cars facing in the right direction
and a merrygoround and people (billbords) and trees ...... in front you will see the highway with the detail and cars.....
this is just a test.. what we have in here isnt to big so i´m lucky.....
i need to seperate all the lanes and run a seperate ecosystem on each of them .....

I´m progressing with the scene now I put together some major parts ...... the place in front of the building .. the ecosystem and some props
and most of all the bridge over the highway isnt finished yet .. plus i need a billboard for the city in the distance where the end of the highway is
and some cars... and and and......
I still need some time.......

Re: MMC Jan 2010 " Futuristic Building Block "
Good work Rayman. Here is a photo i did (2008). It is the biggest tower of the work under construction. It lacks about 150 meters on the photo. It has 818 meters hight. It is much farther than it seems. Difficult to imagine the scale. When you are near the tower, its arrow shape gives the impression that it did not end.
Look at the other buildings at the bottom and the right to have an idea of the scale.
curious to see it in the desert with 47° c

Theynow load very easily and hold up in the far distance .. in the near distance I will go folr over 2000 pixelm wide for the tex..

I think cars should be less colorful, in the max red and blue and try to focus on black, white and silver. But if you want this colorful mood, keep it... maybe in the future the cars choices become more colorful.

Re: MMC Jan 2010 " Futuristic Building Block "
Ok here we are realy working in a big scale since i want to only do this with 3d apart from textures I also create the backdrop
for my building in 3d. i posted some of the simple buildings above... I made 16 different ones.
I now put them into the ecosystem of Vue and this time I went into its linkeditor or node editor and introduced a scalemap that drives the
distribution of the buildings so that i get larger buildings in the darker areas of my map and smaller ones at the outside where the map blends into white.
I get this render with it that serves as the backdrop (yes now I made a city ... a very big one).
All highways end in big cities.....
The nice sideeffect of Vue is that it also renders the alphamap of your ecosystem so that its easy to set up a plane in the background now......

The whole project was then hoasted and rendered In Vue 8 Inf.

Rayman shows both that 3D artists can do great work and how much one artist can do with enough knowledge.

Great stuff Rayman! Very well done, gonna save this thread as a tutorial ;)
I've got Vue 8 Pioneer and will still model in trueSpace (although I got Cararra but haven't learned how to use it yet) so I will continue with my building/city block idea I wanted to do for the challenge :)
