April 2015 Graphic Art Challenge - 3D Pixel Art - COMMENTS

Post by Draise »

Here you can discuss ideas on how you'd make pixel art, or how you'd voxelize your models.

My favorite is Magicavoxel, but it currently is.. offline? Not sure.

Here are some others free: Link, Link and Link

A quick play in 3DCoat with the constructor tool and different materials.

Good challenge idea.

James is doing speed modeling too. That was fast.

Loving the temple work you have been doing James!

I updated some info to clarify things! You can check it out on the main thread.

Can I use different shaped voxel objects in the same image? For example what if the tree trunks are cubes but the green part is spheres? Do the voxel objects have to be in a 3D grid (left) or can they be arranged free style (right)? Can I use various primitive shapes like dodecahedrons, octahedrons, cylinders, cubes, spheres, etc. as voxels?

Could make the cubes really small and green and put them together - No close up renders but it works from a distance.

Spheres, well I'm not strict, so I guess you could use sphere for voxels. I did refer to 3D pixels, which are cubic over dynamic voxels. But sure why not. Cool tree.

Offsetting pixels would be a bit off the rules though, in order to get more rounded edges and things, you would have to carve them out with the pixels.

You can convert normal models to voxels, no worries. That should make things easier.

Here is some inspiration:

Y'all make entries. James needs competition. I'll probably be too busy.

I cannot find a good app for this challenge. I own 3D Coat (older version then James) and it looks like don't have the same menu as him.

I was thinking to use Gridsnap and snap face On with truespace and just plonk cubes everywhere. I might make something quickly like that.

Yeah, make it like a kid with blocks! I might make something simple like that. A fire hydrant maybe. Probably not much to compete with James' entries but it is not fun to win by default.

I tried a technique of making a 3d grid of cubes and deleting some to make a shape. Like sculpting. The garden gnome I was trying to make was too complicated but the technique might work with more time.

Hexagon didn't like the 1000 cube block and TS has been crashing. Time to leave TS except to convert old objects and scenes and move to Blender anyway. Bryce can read TS scenes and objects too. Hexagon will do for a simple 3D pixel thing.

Unrelated idea: Programmers here might create an importer to get TS scenes and objects into Blender if there isn't one. Probably a lot of former TS'ers are going there and would appreciate it or even buy it.

That looks cool Draise.

I've got a simple picture with a fire hydrant coming. I just made a block, copy, paste, snap to make circles or sheets then copy them in Hexagon. You all get busy and make entries. You don't need fancy tools.

Edit: Draise, does this comply with the rules?

Loving the entries so far.

This competition was quiet, maybe because MagicaVoxel can't be downloaded? Don't know... It's perfect for converting geomtry into voxels the exporting them to other software, including a cool GI and AO and DOF capable renderer.

Anyway, here is my contribution, I don't know if I should compete cause since.. it was the one I pitched?

Announce the winner?

I liked Spidey too. The angled image gave the impression of height and viewing from strange perspectives like Spidey would.

You nailed it this time James!!! Two of your entries were awesome!
I also liked the hydrant but I kept picturing a voxel dog peeing a stream of voxels on it....
