FrooSpace Computer: Disk Read Failure

Post by froo »

Ok the frooSpace computer is hosed for now. I cannot reboot.
I hope the disk is not totally fried; I will need to work on it as soon as I can
to get it back online.

Sorry folks.

yep.
Well, I have my most important stuff backed up onto DVD, though I will need to reconfigure the FrooServe and FrooSpace spaces.

So I will install Win XP on the other drive, boot from it, to see if I can salvage data from the drive.
Also, probably buy another disk, and dvd burner. The one I have is useless.
Hm which reminds me; I may not be able to install XP without a working dvd burner/reader. heh

Don't mind Froo, just a bad week. Next shall be good...
We just need someone to temporally host the community server, at least for 24 hours a day, like FrooServe was.

Bummer, hope you manage to salvage the disk or at least the data on it.

I will push up my timeline on trying to get my server running then and we need a few anyhow so this may be a blessing in disguise, but I'm sure it doesn't feel that way now to you at all. The horror of forever losing a hard drive's contents can be daunting, I've been there myself.

Was this in any way related to that issue you had before about the file system table being wrongly identified recently as "raw format" ?

This probably is related to the RAW format ID'd by Windows.
i suspect the drive has been in the process of failing for some time.

While the new hard drive is en route, I'll see if I can get windows installed on the other disk.
Of course, that depends on whether the dvd burner can read the install disk. I am getting a new
burner as well. The one I currently have truly sucks. It can't work worth nothin either.
Ehhh Pioneering. hehe.

Check your PMs here, I may have stumbled on the cause/solution.

LOL Just kidding! Man I feel like that though.

Thanks everyone.

The Disk Read Error appears when the boot sector is accessed. This is right after the BIOS screen is displayed.
But I will try disconnecting the network cable anyways.

Sorry to read that - "disconnecting...", is a good idea to keep it private.

Did you ever save the master boot record? Try to restore it or try to overwrite it using the harddisktools from the manufacturer (usually started in dos environment from floppy/cd/usbstick).
This is no promise, but worth a trial (if you've cought a bootsector malware)

If you can get a live-linux-cd, you could at least determine if there's any data still readable?

well, I am installing XP on a 6 GB drive, to get by for a day or so.

Bad things come in 3's. The third thing that happened is a chip in the windshield
as I was driving home today.

Man we can't wait to leave Virginia. In February.

How do you have a 6 GB HD? I thought those things aren't made those days, anyway I have a 4.3 GB :| Also some really old floppy disks, but they don't work anymore...
Bad news... :?
I'm happy that you achieved your goal, now it's just a question of time... 4 months flies, principally if you do it funny.

Thanks Booxie and everyone.

Looks like the big drive that has all the tS stuff is fine;
the boot disk requires reformatting. Not as much on there, but I have backed up what I need,
plus what I did not back up, is on the big drive (I think) Ah well. Close enough.

So now I have another 500 GB drive that arrived today. Are IDE drives getting harder to find?
Seems like Serial ATA is much more popular, since it's a newer and faster standard.
I will most likely keep it.

So. At present all the drives are out of the bays, on the bottom shelf of the computer desk.
I will put them back into <damn that 6GB drive is noisy!> Always was...
back into the computer probably tomorrow; I will get FrooServe back up asap.

Thanks Leon.

I hear you pugman. We'll figure it out.

I got Windows XP reinstalled on supersloth (the FrooServe computer) this morning.
I will get FrooServe reinstalled and restarted tonight.

I have a new DVD burner/reader as well. I tested some disks just to be sure: CD's, DVD's, both
purchased and burned. All were successfully read. The older drive I had couldn't read worth nothin,
except the XP disk on bootup.

I need to get the disks put back into the computer. Right now they are out of the case,
connected via cable only. I was swapping cable connections, to see if the cable is bad.
That is not the case.
