Painting with light

Hello 3D lovers out there.

First of all, trueSpace is my First, my last, my everything.Now that the product is of the shelves it will always be remembered as a piece of software that brought many, many people into the world of 3D, me included. And I will probably use it till the day I die 8-). Thanks again to Roman and his team of programers.

In the old forum - quite a few years ago - I had some fun projects called: 'Painting with light'. Now that the old forum is gone I thought lets give it go at this new forum (thanks a million Prodigy).
So here is another fun project, Painting with light (because that's what computer graphics is all about :bananacheers: )

Hi Buzz, they're great pics.

The thing i've always liked about 3D is the way you can just change a texture, alter a light and end up with a while new image, not have to start a whole new painting to get a new mood.

I'm glad to see someone else stepping up for the quality of work that can be accomplished with trueSpace !!!

Welcome buzz. Good work. Light and texture is the most important to do a good render. We can understand that when we see this result with a very simple scene.

What happened to your Website Buzz?

Good to see you back in action (I hope?). You might not remember me but I was watching your posts with a lot of interest back when I was just a lurker on the old (I mean really old) Caligari Forum. When I saw the post title "Painting with light" I was thinking of you inmediatly :)

Really nice imagery as usual. Have you finally updated your tS Version? I guess the newer truespace user wouldn´t believe what you have achieved with tS 4.3 :bananacool2:

Hi everybody and thanks for the nice comments.
I see new names here on the forum but also some that are very old, almost ancient ( Steinie, Greysho, Johny, Mad Mouse ), from the days that the first forum at the Caligari site was a source of knowledge and inspiration for me. :worship:

It's nice to be back again and hope that this forum will become of the same magnitude as the old forum was.

I still use trueSpace 6.6 and it's default render engine. But I always tried to push it's capability to the limits. Lighting a scene is my favorite thing, I'm not that good in modeling or perhaps I should say too lazy... :D

I have to go to work now, but I'll be back...

WOW! kewl light work Buzzz, downloaded the tutorial on 3D Total and will try it out, I need more experience in lighting and texturing...

btw. went to the website listed as yours on the tutorial page but it only has a landing welcome page, don't you have a private gallery for our perusal? ;)

Every scene is different and therefore every scene needs it's own setup.
Basically what it comes down to is a lot of practice. Local lights are in most cases the best choice when creating global illumination. For instance, when I need to illuminate an indoor space, then a cluster of omni's (local light) stacked together in the shape of a cube do a great job. You definitely need a lightmanager. Light Man is a great .tsx to handle groups of light.

My website needs an update. For the time being there is just this landingpage with an image. Hope to put the website back on soon.

how many locals do you put in the cube? can you post a little screen grab?

I checked out the tutorial in Theunes post... It is very good.. I learned a lot.. In fact I used some of what I leaned
on my finished works post of my Big Wheel.. I think it worked prety good.. Thanks for the tutorial.. I hope you will do more lighting tutorials in the future...
