From Solidworks to trueSpace

Post by Buzz »

Hi guys,

I have the following question:
is there a way or is it possible to bring a SolidWorks model into trueSpace?
I have a request of a new customer to make a render from a SolidWorks model.
It would be great if it could be imported into trueSpace without to much of a hassle.

Thnx.

Have you tried exporting to a 3ds file and then importing the 3ds file into TS?

It is not easy if your customer can't convert the file for you. Solidwork scene have 3 file: the model, the assembly and the 2d technical in a folder. Rhinoceros can convert this kind of file to extract a 3d .obj. Maybe someone here have this soft and can help you.

Hi Buzz,

As marcel said, if you only have access to the Solidworks file it's difficult. If you can get
the file saved from Solidworks as .iges or .sat format you may be able to import into tS
as NURBS if you have the tS Conversion Pak. Or you can get the Moi 30 day trial version
at: http://moi3d.com/download.htm" . or Rhino demo at: http://www.rhino3d.com/download.htm"

Good Luck!

Hi,

If you have SolidWorks, you will be able to export any of its models to *.STL format, which can be easily read in TS at the Model side.

The only way to convert SolidWorks files into STL for free, is to download the tool called eDrawings (free Viewer) from here http://www.edrawingsviewer.com/
You should be able to save SolidWorks files as STL using this tool.

Have you had a look at Simlab Composer? It wii handle the Solidworks file and give you a good render (renderer is licensed from Keyshot apparently). It's $150 but if it's for a client it might be something that you could use on an ongoing basis.

Hey guys, all of you thanks a lot for all the help!

Math Path, that edrawingsviewer software could be it man! I've downloaded some free SolidWorks models and then
saved them as STL files. And you're right about it, trueSpace can import them. Great!
I don't know if there could be a problem with more complex models but for now it works.

Marcel, Rhinoceros could also be of help. I look into that later.

I used to solve such a problem. Our constructor exported me object in IGES (or maybe STL) format, as I remember. You have to have conversion pack for tS. It wasnt perfect, but it worked. I had to edit it a little bit. Anyway it was quite lot of work with it, as it had no textures etc. Remodeling of it can be sometimes easier or similar effort.
