Watched thinking it was action sci fi. There's a sci fi element but it is a mystery movie. Interesting twists. I like that the characters think and act intelligently. Zero woke. Good acting. Kind of slow moving. Some FX that might be CG.

Some acting and some writing is not good. Mostly good enough. Several actors we've seen in bigger budget movies or TV.

MERMAID DOWN

Note: Brutal violence -- this may not be a movie for everyone.
Bad writing would have stopped me after the first third but my wish to see the mermaid return to the sea, bad guys punished, and more brutal violence meant viewing it all.

-- PROS
It is filmed reasonably well, the acting is good, and they did a lot on a small budget. The actors manage to give varying degrees of life to the characters even though character development is nearly absent from the script. Though the mermaid does not speak the actress uses expressions and movements to portray her well and present a sense of mystery and that while possessing human level or grater intelligence she is not human.

--CONS
The writing ranges from not good to bad and that is it's weak point. The main flaw is the irrational senseless actions of some of the characters and lack of foundation for their motives. About 1/3 through I saw that all of the male characters were evil or stupid, written without depth, and none did right. I supposed then that it was written by a female. (Research: guy and gal wrote it.) The resilience of the recipients of the violence was ridiculous. I'll grant that the mermaid may be super tough like some sea life and may be magical or supernatural but humans would not have survived.

A fun action comedy that doesn't take itself seriously. Reasons to watch are comedy, fire, gore, drones, atomic shark, boats, and Gina.

Work season. Not much movie watching.

I don't care about sports but Miss Emma got me interested in wrestling and I find myself hoping she wins. Look at that spectacular move just after 9 minutes! The crowd goes wild. Miss Grace looks much bigger than Emma. I wonder about the span of weight classes. Looks like coaches wear suits at state finals.

TMI
In the past I saw videos of child Emma vs. boys in jujitsu. Articles about bio-males in women's sports lead me to wonder what she thought of fighting real boys. I discovered she switched to wrestling; at her school all the wrestlers work out, study wrestling, and practice together; and she has wrestled a few boys in competition. Apparently girls can enter boys tournaments there. Her opinion: with age the boys get stronger and faster until it becomes impossible for her to defeat them. "I'll wrestle anyone they put in front of me."

Not even the Swamp Vixens from Uranus can save this movie.
Pros: Snake/gator monster FX is pretty good for a low budget movie. Bikinis. Three people are eaten in the first 1.5 minutes. Creative design for the credits. Gore.
Cons: Everything else.
If you watch I recommend skipping through to killings and bikinis.

I also saw Outpost 11. It was a fairly well made psychological suspense film. I didn't find it interesting and kept watching thinking something interesting would happen.

What to do with a $380,000 tractor? Fight fire of course. I'm surprised she didn't drive the pickup with water tank they rigged in an earlier episode for fire fighting. Good to see coordination with the fire department.
