Avatar names
Most of users use an avatar name different than their real name. it would be interesting to explain how you have choose your avatar name. Mine is my real first name. no need to explain.

Re: Avatar names
I considered forum names like Bomb19 and Sector16 but found none that I really wanted to use.
Bomb 19 is an intelligent planet destroying bomb from the movie Darkstar. The name didn't have much connection to me other than I like obscure low budget movies. Sector 16 is the bomb test area where the mutants lived in The Hills Have Eyes 2. I live near Trinity Site so that could be related to my location. Unfortunately it would imply that I'm a sinister mutant.
So I just used my real first name Finis.

I wanted a name that represented I was new to 3d so .... verde is green in portugese (my wife is portugese so we drink vinho verde every so often)... using the 3 instead of the "e" was both cool and put the 3 in 3d ...

I turned around the name MAN RAY which is a very cool photographer who was famous for using the first real 3d items in photography
the rayograms. Those are objects that cast shadows. He used wineglasses and let light shine through them.-
basicaly the first caustics known to mankind.
only later that I found out that there was a game called Rayman.....

I always tried to understand the logic of your avatar, no success. Never thought it was so simple.

Re: Avatar names
This was one of my first character names when I started playing Online games. CS, ultima Online, Etc... I used in on a few Forums then for gaming, and I have grown fond of it. Plus if I changed it I would never be able to remember which forum has what login.

Re: Avatar names
I remembered a very funny movie from the 70ies or 80ies called "Bugsy Malone". It was telling the story of Al Capone, played completely by kids gangs, messing around with their pedal cars, smoking chocolate cigars and firing their ketchup machineguns. I've got to smile when I think of it & I'd really like to see this again, but a pity I never happened to see it ever replayed, nor heard of it again. This was the birth of that name. I only adapted the sound to "Boooo..." ... "I'm afraid of no ghost!"

I'm an old member, but new to this thread. Long time listener, first time caller!
Spacekdet was originally (actually still is) my IRC handle.
There was a 9 digit limit at the time on user names, hence the hack spelling.
Now it's my email name and my website domain name. I always have to spell it twice when people ask, I don't know why.
Also I'm not the most focused kind of guy.

The same question was asked back in the old Caligari Forums in 2007. I'll re-post for old times sake...

OK guys, I am going to tell you all a true story on why I use "Steinie" on my work. (It's boring so you can stop reading here if you don't want to take a nap!)
There are TWO Robert Steinman's that live in NJ and both are Artist. This one is not me:

(Wow just now I found he changed his name!) Well anyway I didn't want to mess up his business or confuse his customers so I picked "Steinie" as my Artist name.
I liked the sound and besides I like beer too! (I have a large beer can and beer stein collection and those little odd shaped bottles from the 50's are called "Steinie's) So you guys can really call me what ever you feel like.

Re: Avatar names
I just knew that Steinie was an impersonator of himself!
Well my name is sort of my name, with the last name only the beginning. Like Steinie, you may call me anything want or a nic - MAC, James, MC , Burning Hunk of Love, etc.

Re: Avatar names
I got my avvie name from, of all things, an AARP card.
My college roommate and our neighbor were at a Pizza Inn and when they paid, there was an AARP form. They filled it out
and I got a card in the mail: Froo T. Lechak. Man I wish I saved that thing.

Re: Avatar names
Interesting thread.
I can't really remember how I came to start using MikomDude however I suppose it might be because I'm a big fan of the movie "The Big Lebowski" and to anyone who has seen the movie, I think the reason for the "dude" part in my name becomes quite obvious.
I mainly use the username Admiral Skeybar (formerly Lord Skeybar) nowadays though since I met a guy on ModDB who calls himself MattmanDude, we are in a little gaming group together now and I guess that using Admiral Skeybar (everyone just calls me The Admiral anyway) became a much less confusing name to use.

Re: Avatar names
Years ago when I was 21, I had the misfortune of drowning and dying. After 5 minutes of people I knew trying to resuscitate me, I finally opened my eyes and seen the faces of the people I knew over me that were seen in the pool of the place I went to. Such was my after death experience. There are more details behind the avatar but the name Aszhra or Aszhrae as I sometimes spell it has been with me ever since. It was the first word they told me that I had spoken after opening my eyes.
About 10 years ago I met a Hindi priest that told me that I was saying the word incorrectly. The word is actually spelled Azara (is the deva's name of Death, Rebirth and Midwifery) or Azura (which are a type of demon).
Many people are unfamiliar with Hindi religion but it was once believed that deva and demon were of the same ilk. It was easy for a deva to fall from grace but very difficult for a demon to rise to deva unless by great personal sacrifice.
I'm no one great but I still remember to this day the name and what I did see on the other side.
I know this much, it's different for everyone. For me it was seeing true color, that an object could be seen from within and from all side at the same time and that the color, if you could call it a color was pure, like crystal but more brilliant than the finest cut diamond and it wasn't blinding. It was warm and I needn't walk anywhere, the scenery moved as if I was standing still.
I like to think that when my time comes that Aszhrae, Azara, or Azura, however it is spelled will be there for me.
